Over the past week, word of a band of gnolls have spread through Dragon's Dale. They also speak of a monstrous leader known as "The Herald of Chains." The gnolls have been raiding farms and attacking travelers. It is time for something to be done...

The mayor has sent out a request for heroes, or at least warriors, to deal with this threat offering 1500 GP to split between those that successfully can stop the Gnollish menace.

Outside town hall, the four of you meet going to the mayor to accept his task. The first steps on an adventure have been taken.

Well, seems like our four are the only ones, who responded to the mayor's announcement. If we are to cooperate on this mission it would be better if we got to know each other. I'm sorceress Kirinith, nice to meet you.

In response to this Leonardo says, "I agree, considering we will be spending quite a bit of time with each other dealing with this pest infestation, it seems appropriate that we become acquainted. I am the traveling minstrel Leonardo Del Piero.

"Johnathan" he grunts simply. Normally he'd love to waste words, but right now they had business.

A man in a brightly covered garb runs out of a nearby lane, stopping to pant briefly before giving an elegant bow. "Why surly you hadn't thought to leave too battle these forces without the mighty power of entertainment. I the Mystical Sha-Lue will accompany you, after all, performers should never travel without a crowd."

As he pauses to hear their admiration for such a great power a sudden coughing fit overcomes him. Reaching into his throat The Mystical Sha-Lue coughs up a large white mouse that proceeds to flee.

At that moment, a clerk walks outside, seeing the group of you, he asks "Are you here to try to kill those gnolls?" He looks you up and down, as if he expected better, and half expects you to tell him its a joke, or if it isn't, for you to all die in a horrible manner very soon.

"Oh my good man we are, we wish to rid the land of these Gnolls who threaten your city." says Leonardo. Trying to make the make the group seem better than they are, Leonardo says, "I know we may not look like much, but in actuality we are the best adventurers in all of the land. You could find a better team to take on this daunting task. In size and strength they may not be much, but these fellows are masters of arts and magic you could not begin to comprehend"

He raises an eyebrow, seeming to think somewhat better of you, but still skeptical. "Really, we'll see. Come on, the mayor is waiting." He ushers you to the mayors office, and once you enter, closes exits and closes the door.

The mayor is a bald man in his late thirties. He removes his glasses as you enter and looks you up and down. "So, your the ones to stop the gnolls. Hmm... Well, you've seen the add, I'm offering 1500 GP for you to split between you once you deal with the gnolls... and find out what that nonsense with 'the Herald of Chains' is about, probably someone siding with the gnolls for a profit who made up an ominous title to seem scary. I really don't want people getting upset over something like this. Any questions?"

Actually, yes: can we count on any help to aid us from locals? Lower prices on equipment, maybe some borrowed mounts?

Leonardo says, "I have to agree with the street performer, such magnificent warriors like ourselves should have some kind of discount. All I ask is you put a word out amoung the shopkeepers that we should be given a discount. Our task affects this town and everyone in it. as much as it affects us, it is your town and the fate of it is in our hands. A discount would ensure the safety and survival of your great city."

The question causes a smirk to appear on Leonardo's face. "Well now that you mention it, this reward does seem a bit on the small side. Approximately how much would you estimate is the value of this city? The wealth of each person in it and everything in it?"

The Mystical Sha-Lue solemnly suggests that the villagers be asked to each contribute something to the stack.

The mayor sighs, as if he was expecting this, talking quickly as if he wanted to get that out of the way he says "More that 1500 GP if that's what your wondering, though a pack of gnolls won't be able to overrun Dragon's Dale. Burn a few farms, kill some travelers, yes, but raze a city, no. You can take whatever loot you find on the gnolls assuming that no living person has reasonable claim to it, though I consider 1500 GP to be quite a large sum, large enough for you to get by on for over a year, split between the four of you. For everyone in the town contributing something, you'll have to speak with them, though this money is from taxes, so in a way they have, and rather generously considering that they aren't the ones in danger.

"Now, does anyone have anything else they wish to speak with me about?"

EDIT: Sorry drack, you ninja'd me. I'm editing my reply to you.

afrenchpenguin

"Very well, maybe the loot on the Gnolls will be enough to rebuild the Del Piero empire." He says facetiously, knowing that he is not getting anywhere in this argument. "Have you heard any reports from any of the areas that have been attacked by the Gnolls? Any information that could give us an upper hand in the battles to come would be useful.

rweird
2013-02-21, 06:16 PM
"They seem to mainly be in the east, I think that the hills or the forest is probably where they'd make camp, probably rather close to a road, though far enough it wouldn't get noticed. There are at least 20 gnolls, they usually split off into groups, though multiple groups often come from multiple directions, when raiding a farm they usually attack at night, though they attack travelers at almost any hour of the day."

drack
2013-02-21, 07:11 PM
The Mustical Sha-Lue, looking rather insulted, rebukes the man.

"You woundme sir. Could you truly think such couragous adventurers as we would care so much of the price it's self? No, it has long since been a costom in the lands of my people that when many people wishsomething done, and hire brave souls like ourselves, they each give an item of value to them be it a chicken, a glass bead, or even their favorite spoon. Every man from bigto small. As you confess to havingA taxation system, could you not simply ask them as you collect your taxes to add an item of their choice for the brave souls that defend their well being?Be it even a rock or blade of grass? After all it is the dreams in such commonplace thingsthat are of real value. Something to remember while we enjoy our year of good health on your coin."

rweird

After walking for about 10 minutes, you pass by a farm, it seems that people recently tried to fortify it. At least a dozen men, some with clubs, others having actual weapons are working the field, as you approach, some of them break off to see what you want.

Dunkoro
2013-02-22, 08:24 AM
After noticing people, who propably are preparing the farm against gnolls attack, Kirinith decided to try and get some information from them.
Welcome kind fellows! We're a group of adventures, hired by your mayor to get rid of the gnoll infestation in this area. Could you be of any help to us? We've heard you'd have some information on them.

rweird
2013-02-22, 08:39 AM

2013-02-22, 12:57 PM
Leonardo lets out a barrage of questions and curiosity. "How many are there? How well armed are they? What members does their group consist of? We can use any and all information you can give us about them"

Cranthis
2013-02-22, 01:13 PM
"Most importantly, where are they?" Johnathan fills in the last question that everyone seemed to forget.

rweird
2013-02-22, 10:01 PM
"If we knew where they are we wouldn't be here. I know there are at least two dozen, though they mentioned others when they attacked, and there where archers somewhere. All the ones we saw carried a melee weapon, usually an axe, and a bow, though there was something in the sky that threw javelins. Came at us from three ways, on group coming straight in, another sneaks around behind, and the third comes in from the side to force cut off the easiest way of retreat, some archers wandering free too."

2013-02-22, 10:35 PM

They lead you towards the farmhouse, and after some other people go to various other buildings, give you a pack with smoked meats, a hard bread that keeps for a while, and some berries and vegetables from the gardens. "Good luck killing those gnolls, they're a tough crowd."

2013-02-23, 01:01 AM
"Thank you, it seems that there are more Gnolls than expected, and they are quite organized as well. A wild group of Gnolls would have trouble coming up with a battle plan like that. I suggest that we do not underestimate our foes." said Leonardo.

Dunkoro
2013-02-23, 02:56 AM
If they are so well organized we can't exude the possibility, that they are led by some other force, which we might be unaware as of yet.

Cranthis
2013-02-23, 05:31 AM

You walk towards the forest, as you draw nearer, you see a gnoll walking away from the forest, as he sees you, he turns to run out over the hills away from you.

Butterflies fly forth from the mist, their wings shattering as shards of glass, as they turn into centipedes crawling back to the earth. Half way into the ground, they begin exploding into little showers of sparks. "To terrify and amuse." A dark shadow, much as a dragon stretches across the mist before a rabbit with a bald head jumps out, and looks about at the crowd curiously before rushing back in and again casting the dragon shadow before it too vanishes. To let all share in my splendor, for wealths of talent are meant to be shared far and wide. Do you think otherwise?" The mist then separates into a prismatic spectra of colored globules that fly about crashing onto each other before disappearing into the canopy of trees above.

Once you enter the tent, a voice comments "My doubts were before I saw you." you see two brilliant bald eagles with red feathers and brown heads on perches, they gaze down there beaks at you. Standing across from the entrance is a creature, with vulture legs, four wings, much like that of a hawk, piercing yellow eyes, and a vulture-like feathered head. It wears a robe black and a red cloak, on the robe, the stitches on the robe are grey and look like chains, while the cloak has three broken chains. "I am The Herald of Chains. And what would you do, if the people, the "oppressors" as you call them were to leave this place? Would you abandon the idea of freeing the Chained Lord? Because to me it seems you simply want to free yourself of these that oppress this land and despise your kind. Freeing the Chained Lord is the simplest aye for you to deal with your inner fears, because you don't have to face them yourself. But it won't help you in the long run. You either somehow prove yourself to the community, or you will always be an exile, not because of other people but because of yourself. Leonardo clears his throat. He whispers something under his breath and makes a small gesture with his hand. The stage brightens and you hear the peaceful symphony of birds from outside of the hall.

"Ladies and Gentlemen of Dragon's Dale," He begins. "We are gathered here today to deal with our Gnoll dilemma. As many of you may know, many Gnolls live outside of our city. They have lived in peace up until recently. My company and I have traveled to the Gnoll Camp, we have discussed matters over with their leader, and we have come to a peaceful conclusion that does not result in bloodshed or even genocide." He pauses, "These Gnolls have been forced to live out in the wilderness their entire lives. They have been forced to endure dry summers and cold winters without the shelter of civilization. Maybe these outsiders are tired of living in the wilderness, maybe all they want," He pauses again, "Is a place they can call home."
"I propose that we end the bloodshed between us. If we integrate our society, we will usher in a new age of peace and tranquility."

Leonardo bows, and waits for applause.

The Ghost Sound is supposed to be a lot of four (because I can't produce more at 1st level :smallwink:) humans starting clapping hands, but nobody can surely recognize where that sound comes from. We can turn an unused area of the city, or create a new section entirely, into a home for Gnolls. They will join society, become like us, and we can end this bloodshed once and for all. For all of you businessmen out there, you would be getting more customers, or employees if need be. Farmers, you would be getting more manual labor. And Dragon's Dale would grow. This already magnificent city would double its production and economic growth rates. This is what I propose."

"What proof do you require? It is simple logic. More people, equals more commercial and production growth. These Gnolls know the surrounding areas very well and could provide access to resources we did not know were there. They would simply be integrated into Dragon's Dale as citizens, and hence would work as citizens. Imagine as though we were a cuteness factory, hypothetically of course, and we wanted as much cuteness as possible. Now outside of our factory, is a box of just the most adorable puppies anyone had ever seen. These puppies have been stranded and are lonely, all they really want is a home. They may show harshness or bitterness but that is simply reflecting on the conditions of how they were raised. If we took them in, we could teach these puppies not to bite, and our overall cuteness in the factory would increase, benefiting everyone. This is true with the Gnolls as well. Once they are accepted into society, they will adapt to our way of living and the great city of Dragon's Dale will grow."

rweird
2013-03-20, 05:33 PM

"Now, we will split off from this metaphor and enter reality. These Gnolls are conscious and intelligent beings. They themselves only want to enter our city. Their leader, known as the Herald of Chains, has told us this." Something clicked in Leo's mind. They had not actually talked to the Gnolls themselves. Only to the Herald of Chains. What if this wasn't actually what the Gnolls wanted. He shook this thought off until a later time. He continued, "They know what they want. They are as much people as you or I. Who are we to deny them what they want? They are a group of people in need. We need to help them. There is no reason why we shouldn't."
