Eddie Izzard, without a doubt. Consistently makes me laugh my ass off. Dylan Moran is also a winner, on and off stage (something that I've not really seen from Izzard).

Kudos of course to the late, great Bill Hicks as well. The man was a legend.

Death, your friend the Reaper

John Clesse, Bill Hicks, Hamish blake, Adam Hills to name those I can remember the names of.

But indeed, Bill Hicks, his work was art.

Sabrina Jalees (Don't worry if you haven't heard of her...she's Canadian)

She's pretty good. Not one of my favourites, but still funny.

Let's see...

I cannot stress the pure awesomness that was Mitch Hedberg enough.

For Monty Python, forget Cleese and give me the drunken gay dead one. Chapman was definitely the most brilliant of the bunch, in my opinion.

The Kids in the Hall, Bruce and Kevin especially, though Dave had his moments. I choose to ignore the existence of Mark and Scott.

For movie comedy...I don't watch a lot of that, since a lot of it seems juvenile frat humour to me, but I'm a snob. Mike Myers, Jim Carey, and Rick Moranis (Canadian pride, eh?) are the only ones who stand out to me.

And politics or no, Jon Stewart & Co. are always funny.

Eddie Izzard (very funny, and incredibly historically accurate)
Steven Wright (should be credited as the original "one-liner")
Jon Stewart (either Daily Show or stand-up)

I agree with most of the other toughts as well... Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, etc...

I think Monty Python pretty much goes without saying. There's a fair few I like, including various Poms who seem to spent most of their time down here in Aus, but mostly hurrah for Will Anderson! Damn ABC exec bastards, axing Glass House right when it's at its best razzlefrazzlegrumblegrockarglebarglefarglegrump

If we're talking stand up then you've Bill Bailey and Tommy Tiernan. Ross Noble isn't bad but can get a bit to surreal for my liking.

Ross Noble, that's one of the sun-loving Brits I was talking about. Another is the guy who plays Manny in Black Books.

Bill Bailey. I've only seen Dylan Moran on TV (and in Shawn of the Dead, but that hardly counts).

Ross Noble does my head in quite quickly. He just seems to have decided that so long as he says something really weird and 'unexpected' then it'll be funny, which really isn't the case after about 15 seconds or so.

There can't be a list of great comedians without the hilarious (and obscenely crude) George Carlin! I have been listening to this man since I could crawl and have never gotten tired of him.

I'll throw my hat in for Eddie Izzard and Greg Proops for stand up comedians. I guess I just prefer my comedy to come from transvestites and men with pompadours.

Jim Gaffigan. The funniest comedian ever. Look up "Beyond the Pale."

I love him! Especially his insights on cake!
I also loved Mitch Hedberg and was sad to hear of his passing.
Any of the cast from the 90's season of Saturday Night Live were all great, too--especially Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, and Dana Carvey.

In the interest of not repeating people, I will name the little-known Dimitri Martin as one of my favorites. He has a very laid-back style I really like. For example:

"I love 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.' Because sometimes, when I'm having toast, I like to feel incredulous. How was breakfast? Unbelievable."

Bill Hicks and his "comedy of hate" who is by far and away are my favorite comedian of all time.
Mitch Hedberg and his one liners.
George Carlin and his social commentary.
Chris Rock and his fierce comedy.
Jim Carrey and his impressions.
Eddie Murphy as a great all around on stage comic.
Sarah Silverman for deadpan comedy. I find this style to be my favorite.

So glad someone mentioned Dimitri Martin, anyone who can come up with

"I wonder what the smartest thing ever said was that started with the word, Dude? Dude...these are Isotopes. Dude, I am so totally stoked to win this nobel prize.."
Priceless.

However, even better in my opinion, though on the same comedy playlist on my MP3 player, is Daniel Tosh.

If you haven't heard a joke about cannibalism and laughed, you haven't heard Daniel Tosh. Just imagine I have an exclaimation mark over my head and you are accepting a quest to go find that joke. I'll give you some loot and 25 silver pieces...

Well I'm gonna have to go with:

Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Monty Python (all of them)
Dennis Leary (old school stand-up stuff, No Cure For Cancer, ect.)
Arj Barker
Wil Anderson (Aussie Comedian)

no real particular order, but I will say Bill Hicks & Monty Python are definitely tied for 1st for various reasons.

Akmal Sali (sp?) and his backpacking in the name of Allah.
Pinky Beecroft.
Will Anderson.
That girl from New Zealand whose name I can't remember. The one who said that New Zealand was like Australia 'but there's no dangerous animals and the police don't carry guns. It's a bit like Fischer-Price, My First Country'.

Coming in second and third is Mitch Hedberg and Demetri Martin (respectively). I love their non-sequitor style of comedy.

I don't know too many comedians, but of the few I do know, I'd have to say:

Ron White
Rob Paravonian
Michael Palin (All pythons are great, but he's my favorite.)
Groucho Marx (I love the puns and one liners)

Rick Mercer too, though his stuff's harder to find.

You are either a Canadian who moved to Australia, or an Australian who stumbled upon a bit of Canadian awesomeness. Although I assume you're talking about his 22 Minutes and Made in Canada days. His new show is really nothing spectacular. Not even as a failure.

Stand-up

Eddie Izzard has been a favorite of mine for awhile.
Stephen Lynch always makes me laugh and I like singing along.
Tenacious D. I can recite their first album word for word.
Pablo Francisco. Three words. "Little Tortilla Boy"
George Carlin and Stephen Wright were my inheritance from my dad.
Dane Cook
Mitch Hedburg makes me giggle uncontrollably.
Robin Williams
Carlos Mencia before he got a show.
Jimmy Carr. Host of Distraction on Comedy Central. His stand up is even more deadpan and ridiculous.
Stella (A brief show on Comedy Central, but they started off as a stage show.) Again, I have a penchant for the ridiculous, and these guys top the cake.
Bob Saget (If you don't believe me, watch the Aristocrats *Note* The Aristocrats is NOT for the faint of heart)

Movies/TV

The Daily Show
The Colbert Report
Steve Carrell
Will Ferrell (My hero)
Woody Allen
Tim Conway
Harvey Corman
Scrubs
The Office (American and UK)
Bill Murray (One of my all time favorite funny men)
Chris Farley (An underated guy who just wanted to be loved. Went before his time)
Jon Belushi (See Chris Farley)
Hugh Grant (Make fun if you want, I think he's funny)
Simon Pegg and Co. (Shaun of the Dead)
Darrel Hammond (His standup isn't that great, but watching him on SNL is a treat)

And, Suprisingly.
Justin Timberlake. I actually enjoy it when he's on SNL. *(See D*ck in a Box)

I'd better stop before this gets ridiculously long. (That's what she said.) I sorta live my life based on some of these people, they're my heros and idols, I can only try and make people laugh as much as some of the people named here.
