With a sudden BAMF!, you find yourself in a room, the recipients of an obvious teleport. However, several things about this situation are not to your liking. First of all, not all the members of your group made it to the same location, as only Lil, Setsuna, and Dot are in your group. Second of all, while you did not expect to get teleported to this location, the large and angry fire giant in the room knew you were coming, and scores a hit on Setsuna for 33 points of damage as you arrive in the room.

[Before posting an initial action for Dot, what information is she picking up on both the giant and the room, with Magic Aura and Dragonsight active. How big is the room, and where are we in the room, in relation to the giant. Is the giant armed and dressed much like the guards we fought earlier, or is there something different about this one?]

Giant 23
Setsuna 15

The room is about 60X60. There dont appear to be any auras on the giant, or in the room, other than a residual fading aura of conjuration (teleportation). Setsuna is engaged in melee range with it, you and Lil are both about 10 feet away. The giant is dressed the same as the others, although he seems to be a bit bigger. There is one door leading out of the room.

Dot

"Not yet. One thing at a time, though."

Taking a step back to make sure she was out of the giant's reach, Dot gestured up at him.

"Stop that."

She gestured, and sent a ball of dust up at the giant's head, which explodes into a cloud of dust. She reached back into her pack and pulled out a slender white cylinder.

5' step away from the giant.
Standard action: cast glitterdust, aimed so that it hits the giant but none of us. Will DC 24 or blinded.
Move action: pull out her rod of quicken spell.

On the giant's next turn, she casts Hesitate (PH2 pg 114, Will DC 23 negates, can only take a move action, gets an additional save as a swift action on subsequent turns. If the giant is blinded or otherwise denied dex to AC, the DC for this goes up by 2 thanks to cloaked casting.

Dot casts her dust in the air, however some of it is pulled to the northwest corner of the room, where it falls harmlessly to the ground. Her arcane sight showed her that some of the spell energy was being drawn off in a fashion she does not understand. However enough of the dust (stupid natural 1) reached the target to blind the giant momentarily.

Lil's magic does dispel any buffs that might be present on the giant, unfortunately, it also manages to dispel the glitterdust effect on the creature. The giant moves to strike Setsuna and Dot casts her Hesitate spell. Once again, she sees the same weird "splitting" effect on her spell, the giant is partially affected (only gets a standard action instead of full attack) and strikes once at Setsuna

The wizard tries to figure out how to deal with the menace of this giant in a way less reliant on spell power.

Dot

"More specifically, an enclosed area that is sucking magical energy over into that corner."

"What?! All, or some? Do you think it will suck any magic cast, or just any attack against the giant?"

Dot clearly saw that not all of her spell power was sucked into the corner, only part of it was. Thus, her glitterdust could only blind the giant for a short period of time (and was then dispeled by Lil as she tried to bring down all magic effects on the giant) and the hesitate spell which should have prevented the giant from taking anything else than a move action, was only able to restrict him to a standard action (although given what he did in that one attack on Setsuna probably saved her life)

Dot

Feel free to retcon this in after Setsuna's action as well.

Dot glances sharply over at Lil. Since the demon had already seen other magic take hold, including her own, Dot felt like Lil already had an answer to her own question.

"Just stop dispelling things."

In the meantime, it was time to do something that didn't rely on spells. Lifting a hand, Dot brought her now-familiar earth elemental up out of the floor in between her and the giant, and it smacked the larger figure with two rock-hard fists. She turned to examine the apparent source of the magic-splitting - trying to determine whether the effect permeated the room, or was localized in one spot.

Hesitate is still active until he makes a save.

Dot takes a standard action to summon her large earth elemental, ideally in a way that blocks the giant from reaching her, and giving the others a meat shield if they want it. This is a supernatural ability, not a spell. The elemental makes two slam attacks against the giant:
Slam 1 attack: [roll0] Damage: [roll1]
Slam 2 attack: [roll2] Damage: [roll3]

Dot then makes a spellcraft check, based on what she's observed (visually and through Arcane Sight) to determine whether the magic-splitting/sucking effect is emanating from a point or seems to permeate the room. Under the 'identify a strange or unique magical effect' aspect of the skill: [roll4]

The two bralani come into existance, waiting for orders from Setsuna. Following that, Dot brings her favourite earth elemental into existance and sends it in to attack the fire giant. Lil gets into the action, curing Setsuna of some of her wounds as the mage backs out of the fray.

Meanwhile, Dot studies the room and the giant. As near as she can figure, the effect permeates the room, but seems to only affect a spell cast at the giant. As to why the split part of spell energy flies to the northwest corner, that her examination cannot answer.

"Well done. Now please go open that door and tell me what you see on the other side."

She glanced briefly from Setsuna to the Bralani.

"It might be useful to ask them to look ahead, go down side passages as needed, and report back. It would speed up our efforts to find our companions - and quickly. The others may not have been as fortunate as us in their landing."

(going to do some FF here to speed things up)
The bralani and the elemental open up the door and explore down the passageway. The passage is very short and almost immediately ends in another door. Both sets of creatures go through the door and then come back to report that there are no living opponents and several unusual things. (BTW, the giant has no keys on him)
When the group comes into the room, they see what confused the elemental and bralanis. There are two tables in this room. On one table are figurines of humans, each one is labelled with a different name: Gloria Greene, Wilbur Watson and Trudie Tipler. On the other table are three sets of cards, the first set has names of cities in the Isharrah Empire, Isharrah, Myrinnh, and Khoram-Al-Rudah, the second set has numbers on it, 100 gold, 120 gold and 150 gold and the final set has names listed, Oman, Yemen and Abdul. The human figurines each have 3 slots carved in their base, large enough to hold of each type of card. The door leading out of the room has 3 slots in it, shaped in such a way that a human figurine could be placed in each one. Finally, on the table with the figurines is a scroll. On the scroll is written the following:

Three people from Erandol have just returned from a holiday in the Isharrah Empire where they each purchased a handmade sarcophagus. Can you work out where each person bought their sarcophagus, the name of the maker and how much each sarcophagus cost, 100, 120, or 150 gold?

1. Gloria Greene didn't buy the cheapest sarcophagus and it wasn't the one manufactured by Abdul.
2. The sarcophagus bought in Isharrah was manufactured by Oman and was
cheaper than the one bought by Wilbur Watson.
3. Trudie Tipler didn't buy her sarcophagus in Myrinnh.
4. The most expensive sarcophagus was purchased in Khoram-Al-Rudah but wasn't the one manufactured by Yemen.

Toliudar

Ah, then there's just a different understanding of what the 'it' means in that clue. I had assumed that 'it' referred to the object of the previous clause, the cheapest sacophagus. I'm assuming that you intended 'it' to refer to Gloria's sarcophagus. In which case, Dot would swap the Oman and Abdul cards around, I think. I'd have to go back to my notes.

To make sure that she is not 'infected' by others' calculations (leading them into the hivemind issue), Lildorrinene figures that trying to solve on her own with Talbot, and then trying to cross-check with others would be the best bet.

With Talbot, she figurs out the following:
Gloria in Myrinnh with the Yemen card paid 120 gp.
Trudie in Isharrah with the Oman card paid 100 gp.
Wilbur in Khoram-al-Rudah with the Abdul card paid 150 gp.

Lildorrinene comes back to the others with their findings and listens to Setsuna. "I agree, though Talbot was the main helper on this one. Let's try it."

I'm not sure I understand your objection. Gloria didnt buy the cheapest sarco and 'it' (Gloria's sarco) wasnt the one made by Abdul. There isnt anything else in the sentence that "it" could be refering to...Gloria's sarco is the only thing mentioned in the sentence.

Okay, here we go. Gloria's sarcophagus isn't actually referenced in the first sentence. What's referenced is the cheapest sarcophagus. The descriptive element ascribed to the cheapest sarcophagus is that Gloria didn't buy "it".

Please, please can we move on?

The arrangement proposed by Setsuna and seconded by Lil/Talbot proves successful, and door fades away to nothing. The group looks through and sees....
