So, stop me if you've heard this one before:

Aberrant Bloodline Sorcerer (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/classes/sorcerer.html#_sorcerer) + Pain Tester (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/n-r/pain-taster), with either more Sorcerer levels of a dip into Rogue (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/classes/rogue.html#_rogue) (or Ninja (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ultimateCombat/classes/ninja.html), since you'll already have Dex and Charisma) along with the Combat Patrol (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/advanced/advancedFeats.html#_combat-patrol) Feat.

Is this madness or can someone turn this into effective area denial build? The thought being the character is a mid-range caster that can swap to melee denial to protect dedicated casters.

Whips don't threaten and don't use touch attacks, AFAIK

Any other thoughts on maximizing range on Combat Patrol?

The whip mastery chain lets whips threaten. Specifically Improved Whip Mastery. (Improved Whip Mastery (Combat))

Improved Whip Mastery only gives you a 5-foot threatened area. Better off using a different reach weapon, but then you won't be able to use Weapon Finesse. Also, Aberrant bloodline does not increase your threatened area except for melee touch attacks.

You might be better off going Magus with Eldritch Heritage to get the Aberrant Bloodline powers. I think that Long Limbs and Spellstrike should work together.

Actually (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/improved-whip-mastery-combat), its natural reach +5'.

Still a hefty feat tax. I'm not recommending it for the application, necessarily.
