View Full Version : Does anyone actually play RPG Maker games?

RPG Maker, for those unaware, is a game engine and editor made to enable the masses to create console-style RPGs. I occasionally see these games floating about, but, like most fanfiction, so many of them sit poorly with me. There has to be some better ones, right?

Have any of you ever played an RPG Maker game you actually liked?

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle (http://wulfhammer.org/) and Yume Nikki (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/YumeNikki?from=Main.YumeNikki) are probably the most popular English language games made with RPG, maker. Oddly enough neither are really RPGs and are closer to sprite based visual novels in an JRPG engine.

Other RPG maker games recommended by editors at TVTropes.

I highly recommend The Way (one of the games referenced in the above post). I played it years ago, but remember it being pretty awesome.

I have played several and even finished a portion of them. Never got far in The Way though, but all in all I spent quite some time on RPG Maker games. I'd tell you about them, but I have a hard time remembering the titles. Shame.

Witch's House. Play it. Play it right this instant.

Site it's on appears to be down. A quick search reveals that you can grab it here (http://pewdiepie.se/post/35773023479/a-nice-little-free-rpg-maker-game-much-similar) too. Should this fail, I can dropbox it for you.

IIRC, a steam top sale one weekend was an RPG Maker game, so they must get played sometimes. I've played a fair bit of a Suikoden-like from Something Awful called Exit Fate. But that's it, for me.

I recall a very good Final Fantasy fangame made in RPG maker 2000. It's just hard to find decent games through all the crap that gets put out.

I used to be really into them. I have to third The Way.

Alter Aila was pretty fun, and Three the Hard Way is one of the first I ever finished, though it ended on one hell of a flat note.

But really, The Way. It was a great game. Many an afternoon spent playing that thing, all fun. I think there were some things I never did, but really, it was good.

Visions and Voices. You sort of end up in an abandoned town and people are disappearing and you find notes and stuff. It was pretty fun. Good balance of story and gameplay - it's the most recent game I'm suggesting, all the others being made in 2000 or 2003.

The Tiamat Sacrament, that was a great one. This one is special in that I actually finished it - after The Way and TTHW, I didn't do that so often. But I loved it, it has lots of postgame content, a cool evolution system, everything I loved.

Of the above mentioned, I'd personally recommend The Way, Alter AILA, and The Tiamat Sacrament. The others I enjoyed, but these were the most interesting I had seen - The Way is a masterpiece, I feel, Alter Aila sports multiple playthroughs and an interesting plot, and TTS has probably the best RPG gameplay of them all, including the perk of being able to play a freaking dragon.

OH, ALSO:

I haven't played it personally, but I KNOW that Ib is one of the most popular RPGMaker games out there. It's very story based, and it's actually a puzzle game with no battles, but it's very deep and impactful, I've heard. From what I've seen played, this is true. It's a bit scary, if you're into/ not into that sort of thing.

Oh, yes. Seconding Ib. I like Witch's House better, but Ib is a lovely game.

Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden: The Tale of Hoopz is magnificent in so very many ways.

On a more serious note, Exit Fate and Sunset Over Imdahl are both completely fantastic as well.

THERE'S NO TEDIOUS OPENING MONOLOGUE. I LOVE THIS GAME!

*snip*

Good stuff. The Tiamat Sacrament sounds especially interesting, and it seems that I must play The Way as well.

I've actually been meaning to download this one for a while now. Didn't realize that it was an RPG Maker game.

Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden was an RPG Maker game? Well, I guess that makes two.

Any that have monster-catcher like stuff? I have far too much love for that kind of thing, I won't lie.
Edit: Dammit, that was like, a perfect excuse to actually say 'ballin'. Ah well.

Sunset Over Imdahl. It's a short game with an interesting plot and the sprite designs of Chrono Trigger.

Not actually an RPG, though.

Apart from The Way and Sunset over Imdahl, only one I can suggest is A Blurred Line. Pretty good sci-fi RPG.

Also, now that I think about it, To The Moon is made with the RPG Maker as well. So, that too.

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle is pretty hilarious, as is Barkley.
I played Three The Hard Way once upon a time, and it's pretty damn good. There's so many branches in the plot and things to do, and it stayed interesting while doing it.

WALLCRUSH.

I was actually past that point when I made that post.
Though yes, I did fail to notice the bloodstain on my first try. At the moment, I'm trying to figure out how to get past that murderous sheep to get the dead butterfly.

It's a spider, not a sheep.

Also, it's colour blind. Explore around a bit. Maybe you'll even find some nice friendly bears!

What??? I'm talking about that room across from the library, where you walk past that picture of a sheep (a cat wearing wool?) and place the Book of Death on the shelf. A nearby painting of shepherd gives you a toothy grin, and then that red, woolen thing runs at you, jumping out from the "sheep" painting. That's the spider?

Depending on how they're made, you'll either need the "RTP" a free set of system files available from the RPG website, or no, they'll play just fine on any computer. I imagine if they don't specify, it'll work.

Aside; How would people feel about a general RPG Maker topic? Exchange and discuss other projects, as well as resources, tips and test-playing for any projects made by play grounders? Maybe some folk could even be interested in a community game ?

...Oh, I misunderstood. That's not a sheep, though. That's a skull, coming out of the now-open display case. What you need to do is walk till the skull appears, turn around, run back to the shelf, and do a loop around it with the skull following you, then leave the room. The skull will despawn. Come back and claim your prize.

Sorry about that. Dumbest part of the whole game, easily.

If you can get RPG Maker 2K games to work, I'd say Final Fantasy: Endless Nova (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/FinalFantasyEndlessNova) is worth checking out. But I haven't really played it in ages, so I don't remember much about it. All I remember is that I liked playing it and I wanna play it again. Too bad my computer's too sophisticated to run RPG Maker 2K games.

I'm certainly not opposed to the idea, but I have to wonder how many people here have an interest in it.

Nonetheless, it would probably be a good idea to link to RPG Maker VX Ace Lite (http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/thankyou-rpg-maker-lite) (the freeware version of RPG Maker) and maybe some ancillary tools like Graphics Gale (http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/).

In answer to the question in the title, I do. I don't really have any recommendations that haven't already been mentioned, though.

We've had RPG Maker topics here before, but I don't think any of them really lasted that long. I'm pretty sure there are quite a few people here who either use RPG Maker or at least have an interest in indie game development though.

As for Ace Lite, while I guess it might be worth using for experimentation, there's not really that much you're likely to be able to do with it. It is very crippled.

That's the one I mentioned earlier in the thread. Had completely forgotten the name of it.

I think its Game Maker.

A blurred line was great at first but then, after the village, i lost interest.

Exit Fate is fantastic and worth playing, among others.

RPG Maker is a powerful and often underestimated engine.
