It was either D&D 3e/3.5 or just a D20 game. I recall seeing an entry for a campaign setting where you had dwarf-like, elf-like, and half-orc-like races, but they were all really humans.

I have been trying to google this with no luck and my memory has failed me. Please help, if anyone knows what I'm talking about.

The book of humans is Races of Destiny, for official 3.5. It might not be the one you're thinking of, though.

I have been looking around and I am about 90% sure it predates 3.5.

About one of my most favored parts (And most generically useful) bit of the Book of Erotic Fantasy was the racial templates. Which don't include the ones you mentioned but did include things like Half Demon/Devil, Demon/Devil Blooded, Feyblooded, Giantkin, Serpentine, Felid, etc.

Only thing I can think of having things similar to that.

I don't think this is what you're really looking for either, but the Master Player Race List (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19546874/Master_Player_Race_List_Version_2.0) has several human variant race options.

Also Races of Destiny has a variant rule for "half-humans and human like races" in a sidebar on page 150. If I'm reading it right, it pretty much just gives things the human subtype. Again, probably not what you're looking for.

Thanks for the replies, but none of those are what I am looking for. Could it have been D20 Modern? Was there a game master guide for that?

I have the vague recollection that it was a variant in the 3.0 DMG. It wasn't detailed, it just said that you could use the various races that already exist as stats for different types of humans.

It's quite a common variant, so it could be it's just a campaign setting tweak that you and I have seen put into practice and misremembered was from a book.

It looks like it was Dungeon Master's Guide II. I could have sworn there was more on this than a sidebar.

Page number? I can't find it.

I found the "Races as Archetypes" sidebar on the bottom of page 79 of DMG2, which seems to describe exactly what you're looking for. There isn't much detail to it, though.
