Sorry if I'm asking for a lot of help concerning campaigns I'm playing, but you guys have just been so helpful and great. I hope you won't think I'm being a bother.

Anyway, in one of the campaigns I'm DMing my player and his companion DMPC (who mostly serves as a 'guide' of sorts) will probably get on a ship soon enough. I'm planning to make them get aboard of a fisherman's ship who will demand their help in return for safe passage. However, such a naval trip will be boring without a good fight or two, so I'm looking for some aquatic monsters that have the following traits:

-Live in the sea
-Are a proper challenge for a level 3 warblade and beguiler
-Can be (accidentaly) netted
-Can fight both in the water and on land/deck
-Could be considered edible by humanoids (so no lizardmen etc.)

Do you have any suggestions?

Were-Sharks spring to mind.

Sahuagin are Fish people, that may be considered edible in certain cultures... I guess... :smalleek:

Sea Lions would probably fit as well

and this is all from the MM, apply templates to flavor.

I came up with some fishing tables for an ocean trip my heroes were taking en route to their next Adventure Zone (I run nonlinear games- different areas have their own storyline clocks, so an adventure may be available or not depending on where and when heroes show up).

Survival DC Results
5 Nibbles
10 1d4 Nibbles, 1d2-1 Caught (1-60 small, 61-80 medium, 91+ large)
15 1d6 Nibbles, 1d6-1 Caught (1-50 small, 51-80 medium, 81+ large)
20 1d8 Nibbles, 1d10-1 Caught (1-40 small, 41-70 medium, 71+ large)
25+ 1d10 Nibbles, 2d6 Caught (1-40 small, 41-70 medium, 71+ large), 1 monstrous critter (roll once on Cold Marine Encounter Level)

The list from Stormwrack includes... Crab (small Monstrous), Sea Lion, Medium Shark, Lacedon (ghoul), Selkie, Anguillan, Large Shark, Crab (medium monstrous), Seawolf, Huge Shark, Blackskate, Crab (Large Monstrous), Gargoyle/Kapoacinth, Orca Whale, Morkoth, Troll (Scrag), etc- these are all increasing DCs.

You could also have a community of merfolk or nymphs as interesting people to trade, or as additional quest givers. Or you could do the "stranded on a deserted island" routine so the heroes explore the island while the fisherman repairs his boat. That would include land critters.

There was a shark from Fiend Folio that was CR2 IIRC called the Tessen or something like that. Best part of it was that it also had a flight and land speed higher than any base race. So they net the shark and suddenly it flies into the sky and starts doing hit and run tactics. It can actually outrun them on the ship if the ship is big enough too since it had a 40' land speed I think.
