Post all your favorite Durkon moments throughout the strip here.

Some of mine: Boom! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0352.html) and Puppets Cannae Even Eat Pie! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0561.html)

Not to mention the running "trees are our enemies" jokes.

Durkon was in many ways the moral stability of the Order - a solid guy all the way through. He'll be sorely missed.

EDIT: Also, I wonder if Durkon's death will tear apart the Order much as Kraagor's did to the Order of the Scribble. I can imagine Roy and the rest possibly blaming Belkar for Durkon's death. Then if V turns at some point that's further going to cause a rift. The Order has been struck to the core here, I think.

RIP Durkon. May you indeed be laid by your ancestors, and may Thor welcome your soul and bring you to your father's side. May your hammer always be strong in the Celestial Realms, and may the ale never cease. And may your heavenly rest never be troubled by trees.

Rest in Peace.

(As in, don't become a vampire on us!) :smalleek:

No! Not Durkon!

O buddy Durkon, of the mighty beard

Your light is gone, it must be fear'd

from a world of almonds and nasty trees

and cajuns and ice cream and lovely threes

you were a constant, so stable and true

but now you're gone, we have no clue

our arboreal tormentors that haunt our dreams

and laugh at all our futile screams

sleep easier now that you are gone

Malack, Malack, what have you done

Oh Durkon, Durkon Thundershield

your memory shall never yield!

There is a dwarf who was sure, all the beers are gold
And hes drinking his way, to Valhalla
When he gets there he knows, he'll help fight all Thor's foes
With a word he can stun blind or deafen....
Ooh, ooh, and hes drinking his way, to Valhalla.

There's vampires in the halls but he wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes friends have two faces.
In a space by the gate there's a theres a halfling who brings,
two daggers to a dwarf who does dispel.

Ooh, it makes me thunder,
Ooh, it makes me thunder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the north,
And my body is crying for burying
In my spells I have cast crackling lightning blasts
And the voices of the dwarves, cry "Timber!".

Ooh, it makes me thunder,
Ooh, it really makes me thunder.

And it's whispered that soon, to my home he'll bring doom,
but he'll have to do it when he's exhumed.
And a new day will come for those young humans,
When that stuffy elf is their only caster....

If there's no cleric in your party, don't be alarmed now,
Just make sure that you've killed the Linear Guild
Yes, there are two gates you still have to go but in the long run
We know Xykon's still coming to this one.
And it makes me thunder.

His neck is bitten and it won't let go, in case you don't know,
The thunder's calling him to join Thor,
Dear Malack, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
His Bifrost lies in the Canyon of the wind?

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And he's drinking his way, to Valhalla.

Indeed. "Bein' a dwarf is about doin' yer duty, even if it makes ye miserable. ESPECIALLY if it makes ye miserable."

...weirdly, that has always been one of my favorite lines in the entire comic. Being an exceedingly Lawful sort of person in real life, Durkon was always the member of the Order that I could relate to the most.

I hope Durkon at least gets a scene with Thor; could be some interesting character development for both of them, plus possible Snarl exposition, since Thor presumably knows Durkon is trying to prevent its release.

When he goes out of his way to try to save the adventuring party that's trying to get him killed.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DURKON NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

He is gone, and fighting for his beliefs. He deserves a tomb of smooth stone, deep within the mountain.

Only the finest engravings shall adorn the chamber, and the coffin shall be made of pure, smooth stone.

Eulogies:

I cannot believe that Durkon is dead........

We will all miss him so much.

He was a great man dwarf.

Who gave his full support to the Order of the Stick

He was always loyal to his friends.

Durkon does his best to be there when the guild really needed him.

He was what some might call a true adventurer. Others might call him a true cleric of Thor. I would call him a true friend.

Rest well Durkon. May Thor share his beer with you. :smallfrown::smallsigh:

*walks away, sobbing*

Let this empty response be my honour to the most helpful, bravest and kindest dwarf.

Rest in peace, Durkon Thundershield.

Oh, gosh.

Durkon was only fifty-five years old.

Dwarves can live for several centuries. He was not in the prime of his life. He was young, oh so young. He could have lived for hundreds of years more.

How soon the little ones fly, fly away

As fleeting as a summer day.

Durkon, you were there from the beginning, from the very start. The first thing we ever saw in this comic was Durkon fighting the good fight, putting his life on the line to fight that which is evil. His stability was what saved the day. Rather than gloat and glorify himself, he was humble and continued to do his duty.

When Roy was snarky and mean and dead, when Elan was obtuse and obnoxious, when Haley was cryptogrammed, when V was crazy and genocidal, when Belkar was stab-happy; you were always there. We could always count on you to do what was right. When Roy died, you made a speech to console Haley, and through her, to console us.

You resurrected Roy, you mentored and comforted V in V's hour of guilt and shame, you always did all you could to help, and in return the message allowing you to return to your beloved dwarven homelands was eaten. Everyone else got a gift from Shojo except you, but you never complained.

Why am I sad, why am I crying?

I don't know. Durkon just felt really... stable.

:frown: :smallfrown: :frown:

Durkon, I'm glad that you were happy when you died.

My own grandfather died today. I just heard the news a few hours ago. And, I can't write anything to him yet, so I'm going to write something here for Durkon. There might be some overlap...

In memoriam

Durkon Thundershield cared about only a very few things: his home and his family, his friends, his service to his god and the cause of Good, and perhaps a place to find a good mug of ale, though few enough were forthcoming outside his ancestral lands.

But that which he cared about, he cared about deeply. His wisdom, his loyalty, and his courage were a rock that all those who knew him could always count on.

Many times, he had the practicality and good sense to just get things done and not wait for anyone else to come help him. But he was always there to help others. And everyone was safer and more confident knowing that they had his strength to fall back on in their times of need.

He often put aside his own suffering to take responsibility for others, and though they may not have said so, they were always thankful for his care. He also put aside the greatest of all his desires in order to fulfill his responsibility: he chose to keep his oath and never to return home without permission, though that was the one place he truly desired to go.

It was a mark of the integrity of his character that he never backed down from his principles. When his allies were being foolish and fighting with a paladin without realizing it, he chose surrender. When his party was separated, he chose to aid the people around him and do the most good that he could. When his allies were entrapped by Nale, he went to fight alone and showed the power that could be called on by a true servant of Thor. And, when he knew the great risk to his allies, he chose to fight alone and give his life to do everything he could to keep them safe.

Go safely to your God's side, Durkon Thundershield. I know without doubt that he shall have a place of honor for you at his right hand, and a mug of the finest ale that you have ever tasted always at the ready.

Memorial songs:

I'm a full supporter for the villains to succeed but I think this song fits perfectly as a requiem for Durkon's death. Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTKy0drMatc)

My favorite moment is definitely Durkon and Roy meeting for the first time in "OtOoPCs":

:roy: "You know they're trying to get you killed, and yet you're still unwilling to hang them out to dry?"

:durkon: "It don't matter none tha they be rotten warts on tha arse o' tha world, I still have a duty not to get 'em killed. Tha's what being a dwarf is all aboot."

:roy: "Then I wish I knew more dwarves."

That is the essence of Durkon right there.

Also:

"You know he'd be a pretty good warrior if he had a better head for numbers." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0034.html)

"Are...are you telling me to leave?" "... Aye." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0084.html)

"Look out behind ye!" "All I see are a few trees." "Exactly! I'll save ye!" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0169.html)

"'Twas a mechanical defect." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0264.html)

Technically a V moment, but Durkon has a good line here: "Yer MARRIED?!?" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0223.html)

(German is kinda like Dwarven, right?) :smallfrown:

Oh yeah. Though, inside Germany, I think Bavarian is like Dwarven.

Anyhow, translated a few text fragments from Waders song for non-german speakers:
...
you had everything for them to gi-i-ive...
your power, your youth, and your li-i-ife
"Did you, dead soldier, ever loved a girl
surely not because only where there is peace
can affection and trust thrive
you were soldier not to be young but to die
...
soldier, did you go believing and glad to the death
or did you desperately, brutally and bitterly so
not recognizing your true enemy until the last
...
Only that cross remains as the only trace
of your live, but now hear my oath
to fight for the peace and be on the guard
...

(Note that this an anti-war song, so I cut lots of text that didn't fit in the context here.)

We stand here together to mourn for a character - shallow and bland only on the surface, deep, very deep grounded in belief, order and his kind heart. Let there be a minute of silence.

Durkon's moment with Julia was always one of my favorites, too. This gets to me. I feel bad, too, since I was sort of hoping Durkon would be repelled/Malack would escape with Belkar. (I figured the halfling would be killed-killed afterwards, but I was curious to see where Vampire Belkar would go.) I wasn't thinking about the possibility of Durkon dying, the whole Vampire Belkar thing really threw me off the trail.

If Durkon ends up a vampire, though? I'll feel triply bad. Durkon can't become a vampire. It just... shouldn't be possible.

The Papers Chase (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0732.html) is one of my favorite Durkon strips for being at once a time when the party will come to rely upon him, a display of his character that he would use divine power to obey the law, an allusion to his past and a 4th-wall break.

After what happened in 877, I went through the online comics and reread a bunch of ones with Durkon. (Also, I don't know how to add links, so I apologize for that.) Huge post incoming.

84: Saddest. Comic. Ever. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0084.html) "I stay 'ere because it's me duty. And bein' a dwarf is all about doin' yer duty, even if it makes ye miserable. ESPECIALLY if it makes ye miserable!" This quote sums up a vital part of Durkon's character and beliefs.

150: A Comic as Lovely as a Tree (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0150.html) The dwarves' eternal brave struggle against the encroaching arboreal army is first revealed in this comic, I believe? "Gods, yes, man. It's like yer people always are sayin': If a tree kills alone in the forest, does it make a sound?"

153: Priorities (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0153.html) Durkon stands by his friends in their resolve to rescue Elan, even as Roy opts to abandon him. "He be tha heart an' soul of the team, lad." You were too, Durkon.

205: A is Always A (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0205.html). All of it. Durkon can be surprisingly persuasive when he puts his mind to it.

264: I Cannae Tell a Lie. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0264.html)"Twas a mechanical defect." "I dunno, I count, 'able ta be picked by a rogue,' as a pretty major defect, aye?"

305: The Epistle of Durkon. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0305.html)The entire thing is a heartwarming and hilarious moment for Durkon. Quite bittersweet in retrospect though.

333: The Bright Side. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0333.html)Another very bittersweet one in retrospect. Actually, it was bittersweet before recent events.

352: The Turnaround. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0352.html)Three words: "Weather control," and "BOOM!"

353: If a Druid Falls in the City, Does He Make a Noise. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0353.html)All of it. Especially the parts with Julia.

444: He's Dead Jim. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0444.html) "Aye, an' tha is why I'm happy. I know Roy, he prob'bly figured tha any damage he done ta Xykon would make it tha much easier fer someone else ta beat him. Tha' means he died fulfillin' his duty, just like a dwarf. I cannae be sad knowin' me friend got such a good and worthy death. Though I admit tha hittin' the ground might've been a wee bit ignominious." Oh, Durkon.

501: No Cure for the Wedding Bell Blues. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0501.html)"Och, aye, I suppose so. Luckily, Thor understands these things..."

504: That's a Surprisingly Common Reaction. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0504.html)All of it. Durkon being the supportive and wise friend as always.

561: Pop Idolatry. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0561.html)"PUPPETS CANNAE EVEN EAT PIE!"

667: Mending Wounds. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0667.html)Again, Durkon is ever supportive and wise, even though he doesn't know the full details.

680: That's Why It's Called a Running Gag. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0680.html) "They musta allied wit' Xykon! Ye warn tha others, I'll hold it off!"

732: The Papers Chase. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0732.html)All of it. "At least 'til tha end o' tha current plotline." "So, like, what? Twenty strips?" "Make it thirty. They always run long."

733: Collect Call. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0733.html)"So, ye say they're at tha palace, then?"

737: Comparative Mythology. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0737.html)Another tragic one in hindsight.

743: Dinner Conversion. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0743.html)Haley and Durkon's argument and the result of it were priceless.

750: Making Up for Lost Time. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0750.html) Gah! Hindsight is not your friend.

806: Holy Enunciation. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0806.html)Cleric's feather fall. Heh.

There are a bunch more (particularly the most recent ones), but I think this list is getting too long, so I'll end it here.

I suppose my favorite Durkon moment would be...well, the arc from OtOoPCs through #877. He was the kind of solid, quiet support that's always there--until, suddenly, he's not. I feel like we took him for granted.

Fun fact: That strip was also titled "The Bright Side".

From the Paperback War and XPs:
Water?! All this time I thought ye were blessin' yer BEER!
(I'll need to fix that quote when I can get home and double-check it)

On that note, from OtOotPCs:

:durkon: Excuse me, I think you gave me the wrong mug. I order'd a beer, an' this seems to be a tankard o' moose urine.
Bartender: No, that IS beer. The finest beer brewed in all of human lands.
:durkon: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (http://nooooooooooooooo.com/)

Another batch from the discussion thread. This time, up to page 26.

NOOOOOOOOOOO....!!!!!

Not Durkon! I mean....he's Durkon!

No limerick today.

Hard is Fate. Far from home falls the hero,
Durkon the Dwarf, And dead we must mourn him:
The cleric of Thor, The calm and the kindly,
A fere ever firm And faithful in friendship,
Yet fierce to the foe And fell in the fighting;
Hewn not by the sword, Hurt not by the hammer,
But fallen to foe By a treacherous fang,
The blood-drinking monster, The devil of darkness,
The night-haunting snake And neighbor of Nástrand.
Accursed be he; Accursed his companions;
May soon their fate find them, And fell fires take them;
May worms soon gnaw them, and wolves and the waste-crows;
But long be his sleep, And soft be his slumbers,
At rest in the rocks, In the tomb deeply riven,
And bright be his soul In burning Bilskirnir,
Where Sif and Sif’s Husband Must smile on their servant.

J.R.R. Tolkien can say why Durkon is a true hero better than I ever could:

"And we shouldn't be here at all, if we'd known more about it before we started. But I suppose it's often that way. The brave things in the old tales and songs, Mr Frodo: adventures, as I used to call them. I used to think that they were things the wonderful folk of the stories went out and looked for, because they wanted them, because they were exciting and life was a bit dull, a kind of sport as you might say. But that's not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay on the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually- their paths were laid that way as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn't. And if they had, we shouldn't know, because they'd been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on- and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same- like old Mr Bilbo. But those aren't always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in! I wonder what sort of tale we've fallen into?"

-Samwise Gamgee, The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, The stairs of Cirith Ungol

I think deep down, Durkon never wanted to be a great hero, to earn glory and be remembered forever. He just wanted to go home, drink a good ale, and live a simple life.

Durkon - Let ravens fly and give your soul release.

Personally, I liked the strip where he turned into a Vampire. He needed a new Quirk of some kind.

That's actually quite good alliterative verse. It's a difficult format.

He's a classic low-key badass. Acting with such humility that when he does go all out it's all the more impressive because we forget what he can do. Remember, the truly strong don't bother bragging because they don't need you to be impressed.

Noooooo Durkon... DURKON!!! *Tears Overflowing*:smallfrown::smallfrown::smallfrown:

Oh boy, that's so sad :smallfrown: Noooo Durkon !

When I read the last words from Durkon, I just remembered this song from Bastion Soundtrack : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlfUcnSbKDA

I think it's really the right song to listen while reading today strip.

Tutu.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Sorry, you said it so accurately I can only echo it....:smallfrown:

I know there are always theories about ways things can be fixed/didn't really happen/will ultimately become something else. But that doesn't make the immediate shock and grief of seeing a character you liked get drained to death any more or less saddening.

Vale Durkon... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bjETSpmZJM&t=3m56s)

May be darkly appropriate given his likely immediate fate.

A song to a brave warrior who we shall miss :smallfrown:

You fight for your values
You fight for your friends
You fight a unholy blight
You fight for the light in the end

Come take a seat and I will recite you a tale
Of bold adventure spanning all corners of the globe
I knew a champion, we travelled far and wide
We saw so many wonders roving side by side

In the streets of Azure City we brought help to those in need
Word it spread so quickly of our dealings and our deeds

Into the deepest dungeons we ventured into the black
If we had only known what we were bringing back
We felt the wrath of every Paladin and Lich
Caught in the crossfire of their politics and rage

Had to get some stings pulled to get them off our backs
But there was so much greater danger waiting to attack

Just a lonely exile, your future friend arrived
You rose above the prejudice and the scorn
Your friend became the champion of the world

You fought for your values
you fought for your friends
you fought the unholy blight in the lights name my friend
but oh brother dunkon will you see the light at the end

Durkon, you were always my favorite.

I'd pour one out for you, homie, but I know you wouldn't want me to waste it.

RIP

Didn't pour one out for Durkon. I poured the last of my homebrewed mead in me instead.

Also, just out of curiosity, did anyone else literally drink to Dorkon last night? It seemed like the most appropriate way to mourn his passing.

Yes. I even had beer, which I normally skip in favor of whiskey.

Glad I wasn't the only one. For some reason, blue moon didn't seem like the most appropriate thing in the world, but it was what I had.

For what it's worth, I had a Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro in honor of Durkon.

Like other forumites before me, I had to create a profile and comment after this this event.

I am at a loss. Durkon has consistently been one of my favorite characters from the OOTS party and now he has fallen to dire circumstances. As many have previously speculated, it seems he is destined to fulfill the dark prophecy of the dwarven lands.

A misguided friendship leads to inevitable tragedy. Perhaps Malack and Durkon can be better friends now, if only for the wrong reasons. :smallfrown:

RIP Durkon, Good Stubborn Dwarf till the end.

I've just sort of been sitting here crying for awhile after reading it. Very powerful. I just can't the feels.

Uh, did I say crying? I meant... liquid pride... yes.

The liquid pride just keeps flowing...
