The term 'Striker' generally refers to a Glass Cannon, a character designed to deal lots of damage but not very good at taking it.
For a newbie, I recommend a Human Duskblade.

Does that mean a ranged magic user for offense? You might consider Wandstrike (Complete Arcane) with any magic user. If you're brand new, try out the Warmage (Also Complete Arcane), it actually has alot to recommend it to someone new to casting.

1) Limited spell list - So it's easier to pick stuff and move on, plus you can cast as a sorceror, so no wasting time thinking about spells ahead of time, just pick something fun on the fly
2) Virtually all the spells are offensive so you would easily fill out the striker role.
3) Light armor and a D6 Hit die so you're not nearly as squishy (my last 7 person experience saw the mage getting a spear up his gizzard in the first round of the first fight).

Edit: Sorry for the repeat dwlc, I was in edits when you posted =\

I am assuming you are coming from a 4e background, in 3.5 the roles aren't really integrated into the system as they are in 4e, theoretically all classes can cover any of the roles, though obviously some are suited better for certain roles than other (with Magic users being able to do everything).

In any case I would suggest you to look at the Duskblade class (Player's Handbook II) it is similar to the Swordmage; but instead of protecting allies and teleporting they use their weapons to deliver their combat spells. Really fun class and suits the Magic Striker role perfectly.

If you want raw offensive magical power, warmage from CA is good. Great damage and has weapon usage too. At higher levels you can where mithril fullplate with no spell failure.

If you want to sit back and blow stuff up, there are two main classes (outside of Evocation specialist Wizards and Sorcerers).

The first is a Warmage, a base class from Complete Arcane. It specialises in taking out hordes of enemies with large AoE and Splash damage spells.

The second is the Force Missile Mage from the Dragon Magazine Compendium, which specialises in the spell "Magic Missile". You are able to make a Machine gunner out of it if you so wish.
