So I am trying to make a trip heavy build and need to know one thing: is there a way to trip when I can make attack of opportunities?

Yes. Just do so. Trips can always be made as AoOs.

All aboard the derp train. Suddenly thicket of blades is god tier.

No "suddenly" about it. it always was going to be powerful. Most tend to aim for the feat chain if not a Crusader dip at level 8.

So the other question would then be, how do you protect yourself from the AoO generated by standing up after you've been tripped?

IIRC there is a skill trick for it.

IIRC there is a skill trick for it.Away from books, but I also seem to recall a tumble skill trick that lets you stand up from prone without provoking an AoO.

DC35 tumble check lets you stand as a free action that doesn't provoke.

Boots of Agile Leaping from MIC let you stand from prone as a swift action if you have 5 ranks of balance. Standing up doesn't provoke AOO. Only cost 600GP too.

Skill trick is Back on your Feet and requires 12 ranks in tumble to stand up as an immediate action without provoking.

Thief Acrobat 1. Stand up from prone as a free action that doesn't provoke AoO (but only in light/no armor and light load).

Even better, take Thief Acrobat 2 and you can fight from prone with no penalties (but only with melee weapons and in light/no armor and light load).

Still, you need 2 levels of rogue or monk to get the skills and evasion to qualify for the class.

Yes, the skill trick Nimble Stand in Complete Scoundrel is the easiest way; it only takes 8 Tumble ranks.

Note that NOT protecting yourself isn't as bad as it seems. Since the AoO happens BEFORE the trigger, you're still prone for it, and thus can't be tripped with it.

IIRC skill tricks can only be used once per encounter or something like that, so not that helpful if you get tripped more than once. The Thief Acrobat or the DC 35 tumble check is probably a better avenue to shoot for.

A Whatever 10/Exemplar 1 can take 10 on a tumble. That requires 13 ranks, as well, so there's 23. Skill Artistry +4, Jump Synergy, +2, High Dex (assuming Dex Boosting Race, 18 on the point buy, 2 from leveling, and a +6 Magic Item; that's a +9), and you have 38 there. You can even drop the +6 Magic Item for a casting of Cat's Grace or whatever the +4 Dex spell is called before the battle.

Indeed, they're 1/encounter or, for out of combat use, 1/minute.
