I would argue that the different enemies the OOTS encounter often subvert the standard tropes of standard D&D villians.
The Taquin Guild is one of them.
Their shtick is not "They are OK people yet still antagonists"
Its that "They are utter MONSTERS. To the very SOUL. Yet they are all very well mannered and reasonable".
Some people complained when Malack revealed just how evil he was, and said it was spelling it out with burning letters.
But that was the point. It was a reveal, that a decent, mannerly, smart and respectful person could still be a abominable MONSTER. This was a similar situation with Taquin.
