This is the Maug's Su ability:

Pulverize (Su): Three times per day as a standard action, an incarnate construct maug can touch an object and negate its hardness for 1d4 rounds (Fortitude DC 18 negates). This power can affect an object of up to 1,000 cubic feet in volume (a 10-foot cube); if the object is larger, only a 10-foot cube of it is affected. Unattended nonmagical objects do not receive a saving throw. If a creature holds, wears, or carries the object, the incarnate construct maug must succeed on a melee touch attack. This attack does not provoke an attack of opportunity. Many incarnate construct maug fighters learn the Improved Sunder feat to use this power against dangerous foes.

So I googles around and found this:

The saving throw (if any) against a supernatural ability is 10 + 1/2 the creature’s HD + the creature’s ability modifier

But even if I consider the creature's main ability STR it still doenst add up to 18. Not even if it considers full HD instead of 1/2. Does the DC on this ability not scale with a higher level/STR maug PC?

Sometimes creatures have racial bonuses to their DC. Usually the stat up mentions it,, but maybe it is included but not mentioned.

Well the Maug is from FF (p 121) which is a 3.0 source; so it probably needs updating.

There is nothing in the update pdf

Powers like this are normally Con related, but the Maug's Con is —

So should I just use 18 even if I am now lvl 10?

Isn't it a set DC, rather than a modifiable?

Arent all Su modifiable by HD and main atribute?

This is from the stat block of an incarnate construct, so it had a Con.

Incarnate Contruct loses special attacks and special abilities, so in that case it's DC 0.

Level 10 won't matter regardless, it's only dependent on racial hit dice, which can't increase because Maugs advance by character class.

The save DC doesn't match any particular ability scores. It might have a racial bonus to the DC, but more likely it simply wasn't calculated according to 3.5 rules. This sort of thing calls for a DM ruling.

Regardless though, Incarnate Construct eliminates the ability anyway.

I am a full Maug. Not an incarnate construct.

Not always - the vast majority of Su abilities follow the forumla of 10 +1/2 racial HD + ability mod, but some are set DCs instead.

3.0 used mostly set DCs instead of scaling DCs, so it's very likely that, if an update to 3.5 exists for that book, it has the correct DC formula.

Unfortunately neither the Fiend Folio 3.5 update booklet (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a) not the Fiend Folio errata (https://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/er/20040125a) mention the Maug at all. :smallfrown:

If a compulsory houserule is required then this probably belongs in the dysfunctional rules thread.

this is not dysfunctional, it's simply not working correctly. it does not work against itself.

I guess it could be worse. At least it has a high base DC.
