Got a riddle? Good at riddles? Welcome to the game!

One person asks a riddle (known or original), and then people guess the answer. The first person to get the riddle right gets to ask a riddle. If they don't feel like asking a riddle, they can make it an open question. If everyone gets stumped by the riddle, the original poster may give a hint after 24 hours, and if we're still all stumped - make a new riddle. Please one riddle at a time, and spoiler your guessed answers (so people just tuning in can try guessing themselves!).

And I know there's this cool thing called internet that allows you to look up answers, but please try to refrain. This is a game after all, and it's no fun to anyone if you cheat!

First riddle!

My thunder and lightening come on a clear day,
yet soon after I will have clouds and rain,
the land will become dry from my precipitae
and will never be the same.

What am I?

What is limited by the inability to limit it?

Kurien
2013-03-09, 11:31 AM
Night? Although it is useful for stealth, our inability to shorten it adds limits to the growing seasons of plants.

Fire? Controlled fires have been an essential part of human evolution and history for hundreds of thousands of years, but its usefulness lasts only as long as we have that control. When fires go wild, there is little humans can do to limit their growth and destruction.

Age? With age comes experience, which is useful, but we can't stop ourselves from accumulating more of it, which is bad.

Time? Time is usually required for the development of great things, but is also the driving force of decline and decay. We can't prevent the passage of it, so that limits everything in existence.

[Aside: I think that riddles like that are not ideal. Their brevity leaves plenty of room for interpretation, and people often find a number of reasonable answers that the riddler never intended.]

Shadebolt
2013-03-09, 04:33 PM
I apologize. I will accept any of those answers, but I was looking for the human imagination. The only thing that prevents it from being infinite is the inability to think up a limit to it, similar to the omnipotence paradox. Kurien, your question.

Kurien
2013-03-09, 05:55 PM
No problem, sometimes the open-ended-ness of a riddle is what makes it interesting. Imagination was a good answer too.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to check the forums for a couple days, so it's Open Forum.

A charade for you folk I came up with. Enjoy:

The 1st starts with a catholic meeting,
or μᾶζα in ancient greek.
middle: the sound of sneezing.
Last: when sun and earth do meet.

2nd Begins with the kind of green
you only get from France.
and ends with things that loom above,
and lasts like amaranth.

3rd in name you can drive on
or sail to on any side.
4th is found round lion's neck
which kings can never hide.

5th begins with what you'd call
A dress just bought from store.
then begins again with meat
from brother of a boar.

The middle is another name,
for going "number one",
the end is places under hill
where Bilbo's trip begun.

6th begins with the process
in which you get online.
It's middle is the leading vowel
inside the word "divine".

Last it ends in your share
of all your hard earned loot.
put all 6 together
and they make up a certain group.

What is the name of that group?

Blue Ghost
2013-03-16, 08:09 PM
1 is Massachusetts.
2 I couldn't get, but going by the rest, it has to be Vermont.
3 is Rhode Island.
4 is Maine.
5 is New Hampshire.
6 is Connecticut.

The group is the New England states.

Zweisteine

Thanks guys! Blue Ghost nailed it. Strong work. So fast though. :smallsigh:

And to explain vermont: The root words for vermont are Verd (as in french green) and mountain. So the only green you'll find in france...

And something that looms above...while amaranth is suppose to last forever.

This is fun. :smallbiggrin:

Here's a classic for you. (I'm unoriginal. :smalltongue:)

Four jolly men sat down to play,
and played all night till break of day.

they all had made quite fair amounts!
Can you the paradox explain?
If no one lost, how could all gain?

Conceiving of new riddles is not one of my strong points, so I'll use an old one from a book. Hopefully not everyone has heard it before.

"The womb of the wold, wet and cold,
bore me first, brought me forth.
I know in my mind my making was not
through skill with fells or fleeces of wool;
there was no winding of wefts, there is no woof in me,
no thread thrumming under the thrash of strokes,
no whirring shuttle steered through me,
no weaver's reed rapped my sides.
The worms that braid the broidered silk
with Weird cunning did not weave me;
yet anywhere over the earth's breadth
men will attest me a trustworthy garment.

Say truly, supple-minded man, what my name is."

Hmm.
"Half of Twelve" is 14 characters, including spaces, so half of that is 7 characters?

Or,
It's a visual thing. Cut the number 12 in half, horizontally, then take the bottom part of the two, turn it upside-down, and put it on top of the bottom of the 1 to make a 7.

Reaching, I know, but worth a shot.

JackRose
2013-03-27, 05:59 PM
1. I dont know what that is
2. no :smallwink:

Different bases assume that you go up to a number other than ten before moving to the next digits place. For example, counting in base eight would go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10. Counting in base two (also known as binary) would go 1, 10, 11, 100, etc. In base twelve you would go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, 10, 11, 12. 12 in base 12 would be equal to fourteen in base ten, or twice seven.

OOOOOO! I think I got it!

Roman numerals for 12 is XII. If you cut that in half, it is VII, which is seven!

Your cryptic response got me thinking about other ways of writing 12, like in letters, and that led to other ways like Roman numerals.

Octopusapult
2013-03-27, 09:11 PM
7 is half of 12...

E = 10
L = 25
N = 9
S = 5
T = 16
V = 7
W = 4

S+E+V+E+N = 41
(5+10+7+10+9)

T+W+E+L+V+E = 82
(16+4+10+25+7+10)

7 = 41
12 = 82

41 is 1/2 of 82.

7 is 1/2 of 12.

Duck999
2013-03-27, 09:17 PM

Okay, I haven't worked it all out, but here's a tentative guess:
They're all elements that can be found in air. (Little airy creatures)

In glass you can find oxygen.
Jet is made from carbon (as in carbon dioxide/monoxide).
Tin, I'm not sure about, unless it's the I in tin for iodine.
I'm not sure about the 4th.
5th implies it's heavier than air (can never fly) so something like xenon?

Answer spoilered below.

Loki, who was a blood brother of Odin, was father to Fenrir, who will kill Odin at Ragnarok, and, via shapeshifting shenanigans, gave birth to Odin's horse, Sleipnir (and apparently a couple other children in stories that we don't have any more).

3 things,
1. this was really complicated >:|
2. this is open floor so ima take this again
3. this riddle is long and unique, no use finding it on the intermet

This is a most unusual paragraph. This writing may annoy you until you find out why it is so unusual, for you won't find a solution instantly. But don't go into a tailspin about it or go crazy, for it isn't that difficult. But you will admit that it is most unusual. This writing looks so ordinary that you might think that nothing is wrong with it. And, in fact, nothing is wrong with it. But it is unusual, and you must ask why. If you study and think about it, you may find out why, but you must do it without any coaching of any kind. No doubt if you work at it for long, it will dawn on you...who knows? So start to study it now, and try your skill at finding out what is so unusual about this writing. If you can do it in half an hour, you may claim an approach to wisdom, but if you can't do it in half an hour...

The Pope, Beyonce, Barack Obama, and Bill Gates are on the same plane. There are only 3 parachutes left for the 4 of them. Obama says: "As the President, I think I should have the right to have a parachute, because I rule millions of people in the greatest nation of all." Beyonce says: "As one of the greatest singers of all-time, I think I should deserve to be safe. I bring tears and laughter to millions of people, and I'm an important contributor to pop music." Bill Gates says: "As one of the richest successful company owners, I think I should live because I'm on top of the economics cycle, creating jobs and incomes for millions of people. I am a wealthy and intelligent man." Finally, the Pope says: "I'm an old, religious man. I lived a life that's full, I helped millions of people find their way through God, I'm ready to let go of a parachute and to face my fate."Which one of them will abandon the parachute and die?

My personal favorite.

'Twas whispered in Heaven, 'twas muttered in Hell,
And echo caught faintly the sound as it fell;
On the confines of Earth, 'twas permitted to rest,
And in the depths of the ocean its presence confessed;
'Twill be found in the sphere when 'tis riven asunder,
Be seen in the lightning and heard in the thunder;
'Twas allotted to man with his earliest breath,
Attends him at birth and awaits him at death,
Presides o'er his happiness, honor and health,
Is the prop of his house and the end of his wealth.
In the heaps of the miser, 'tis hoarded with care,
But is sure to be lost on his prodigal heir;
It begins every hope, every wish it must bound;
With the husbandman toils, and with monarchs is crowned;
Without it the soldier and seaman may roam,
But woe to the wretch who expels it from home!
In the whispers of conscience its voice will be found,
Nor e'er in the whirlwind of passion be drowned;
'Twill soften the heart; but though deaf be the ear,
It will make him acutely and instantly hear.
Set in shade, let it rest like a delicate flower;
Ah! Breathe on it softly, it dies in an hour."
