Why are so many people such big fans of it? You have to devote at least one feat, maybe more, and many, many skill points to it. Seems like too much cost for what you get.

Well knowledge skills are already great, and if you invest the points, you get a free damage bonus of up to +5. Even if you blow the check, after the earliest levels you'll still get +1 damage, which is untyped and applies to all of your attacks.

(not an expert, just say what i think)
+5 to hit is the big part, the bonus damage is just nice. i guess you will take it as a rogue (skill points..), and you want to hit with every attack you can for sneak attack damage- and with TWF and med BAB, your 'to hit' is pretty low.

The Characters for whom Knowledge Devotion is a great Feat are already devoting those Skill points to the appropriate Skills; for others, it's a good Feat because it provides a superior return on investment versus - for example - Weapon Focus/Specialization (1 Feat vs 2 for better Attack bonus and at least equal Damage, and not Class restricted), while simultaneously encouraging investment in Skills that can have out-of-combat utility, thus creating a more rounded Character concept.

High knowledge skills give you an excuse to metagame IC. The rest is just gravy.

Mainly, it's for characters that would be pumping their Knowledge checks anyway. Things like Cloistered Clerics, Archivists, maybe Bards. If Guidance of the Avatar (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/sb/sb20010504a) is available, that's a +20 to the check as well.

This, pretty much. Yeah, the extra to-hit bonus is great, but knowing the monster's abilities can prevent a TPK from recklessness.

if you already have knowledge domain vai maybe cloistered cleric as mentioned you dont have to spend a feat to get it, you can just trade any domain granted power for the corresponding devotion feat

also a way to reduce the skill point investment is to spend two to pick up the collector of stories skill trick which gives you +5 to all checks to identify monsters

Every +1 to attack can be converted to +2 damage (at least) when attacking with a 2H weapon. +5 to the attack can mean +10 damage. In addition to all other bonuses.

You can get it for cheap, too. Grab a level in Cloistered Cleric, trade out the bonus Knowledge domain, and grab yourself 2 domains/devotion feats as well. You also get turning for your trouble.
