could be how they found out about the power of blood. as far as the group standpoint goes use your better judgement on how well ya know the group to see how they might react to it.

It is a cool concept for a roleplay perspective. In the Unknown Armies RPG thingy there is a class thingy that gains power by cutting itself and such. I would recommend discussing the issue with your group, as you probably have no issue with it, but someone there might.

That isn't the default? I don' know about D&D, but that is certainly how I ran a blood mage in Mage the Ascension.
