Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

I'm going to take the low-hanging fruit and point out Twilight's evolution in dealing with freaking herself out. We have Lesson Zero, where Twilight's focus on her strict deadline caused her to collapse completely and go nuts, messing up most of the town and turning herself into a total wreck. Then we have It's About Time, where Twilight freaks herself out but tries several solutions to the problem, reacting in a generally positive way, but still going overboard, a lesson which she learns at the end. Then we have Magical Mystery Cure, where the problem is easier for Twilight (because it's her friends she messed up, not herself) but where she despairs for only a short while and doesn't worry about the fact that she messed up or what consequences will befall her, instead focusing on solving the problem and trying her solution out empirically. We also saw her pick up the calming technique from Cadance in Games Ponies Play, and that episode showed Rainbow Dash freaking out in her place because she remained calm as things kept going wrong.

I think we need a change of discussion. The previous one was starting to get a bit too entrenched (and kinda pointless, even though over-analyzing stuff is what we DO here, there's gotta be limits...).

That's a pretty big task. I can say though that outside Twilight (I mean, wings and all, show's about her, come on), Fluttershy is probably the one with the most development. She went from unbearably annoying in Dragonshy to 5.0+ wingpower. From afraid of dragons to befriending an immortal chaotic spirit.

I would think Rarity has the least. I think the main lesson she's learned throughout the show is in Sisterhoove Social, and there hasn't really been a chance for her to show what she learned elsewhere. In Sleepless in Ponyville, there wasn't much interaction between her and Sweetie Bell, and what we mainly saw was Sweetie being a mule (that's at least a pun inside a reference). So, really, she didn't learn a thing if she's still treating her like that.

Arguably, I'd say Applejack grown the least. The AJ we saw in S1 is the same we saw in S3. Her one character development episode was Applebuck Season, and it ground to a stop right there. (You can say Fall Weather Friends was also an AJ episode but technically Dash was the one provoking her. AJ on the other hand, only resorted to underhanded tactics after Dash took it a mite far.)

As for most character development? Twilight would be the natural candidate. She gone from anti-social bookworm to a outgoing, if a little OCD, leader. Hell, the entire Season 1 and part of Season 3 was about her character development.

Every so often, an eight year old boy and girl neighbouring me come by my house. The girl loves colouring in ponies and loves my art, so I'm always giving her art lessons, often by picking out some pony lineart and showing her how to use SAI to colour it. Here's an example from today:

"Really? He likes it that much?"
"Yeah. Sometimes I think he's going to turn into a pony."

Magical Mystery Cure is also a good counterpoint to Return of Harmony. In Return of Harmony, Twilight was so in dispair of what had happened to her friends and her inability to change them back that she ended up giving up on herself. A pretty similar thing happens in Magical Mystery Cure, but while Twilight goes through a bit of depression there as well, she does pull herself back up and motivate herself.

I hate camping. You better believe if my little sister guilted me into going camping I'd make her do most of the work.

Rarity develops, after a fashion, in Green Isn't Your Color, Best Night Ever, Sisterhooves Social and most particularly Sweet and Elite. Arguably Suited for Success, too. She's always been fairly reliable, resourceful and courageous in a crisis, so it might look like she hasn't been doing much in contrast to Fluttershy, who gradually needs to be pushed less and less to rise up to the challenge. I'm not sure the writers know all that well what to do with her right now, hence the lack of a Rarity episode in season three. They tend to play up her flaws for comedic effect a lot of the time, and rarely shine a light on her positive qualities. It's a bit of a shame.

While I agree that Twilight has gotten better, Magical Mystery Cure's setup is different from the others, making it a less than optimal comparison point. To elaborate, MMC is only one where Twilight's first plan worked flawlessly. I'd say that her plans of finding a friendship problem or disaster-proofing Equestria were on par with the one in MMC, and it was only after those failed that she started going nuts. MMC didn't back her into a corner like the other two did.

While I agree that Twilight has gotten better, Magical Mystery Cure's setup is different from the others, making it a less than optimal comparison point. To elaborate, MMC is only one where Twilight's first plan worked flawlessly. I'd say that her plans of finding a friendship problem or disaster-proofing Equestria were on par with the one in MMC, and it was only after those failed that she started going nuts. MMC didn't back her into a corner like the other two did.
This begs the question of why her plans failed in Lesson Zero and It's About Time, while her plan succeeded in Magical Mystery Cure. The answer to this question can be found in the content and subtext of the plans themselves. That is, her first plan succeeded in Magical Mystery Cure because it was fundamentally different, both in goal and execution, from her plans in Lesson Zero and It's About Time.

All three plans were meant to resolve a problem Twilight perceived. In each case, she's kind enough to share what she believes to be her problems with us. In Lesson Zero, she was concerned that she was "supposed to send Princess Celestia a letter every week, telling her about a lesson I've learned about friendship! Not every other week, not every 10 days, every single week!" In It's About Time, she convinced herself that it was down to her "to prevent whatever horrible thing happens in the future!" In Magical Mystery Cure, she was sure the spell she cast "changed the Elements of Harmony! That must be why their cutie marks are all wrong!"

The first obvious difference between Magical Mystery Cure and the two earlier episodes is that it is the only episode where Twilight actually identifies the problem correctly. In Lesson Zero she had convinced herself she had a responsibility she did not actually possess. Celestia's assignment in Friendship is Magic - part 2 ran thusly: "I, Princess Celestia, hereby decree that the unicorn Twilight Sparkle shall take on a new mission for Equestria. She must continue to study the magic of friendship. She must report to me her findings from her new home in Ponyville." No mention is made of weekly deadlines or that Twilight's reports had to do with solving problems. Those were conditions Twilight imposed upon herself. I know what that's like; I tend to do that myself, never with good consequences for myself or my friends. It's one of the reasons I identify with, and like, Twilight so much.

In Lesson Zero Twilight projected her own unreasonable demands for herself upon Princess Celestia, then attempted to fulfill them having raised the stakes impossibly high. In It's About Time she again makes up a responsibility for herself. She never gives her future self time to deliver her message, then jumps to an improbable conclusion from the very little evidence she has.

Magical Mystery Cure, by contrast, has her identify what went wrong right as soon as she sets her mind to the problem. Before she does set her mind to the larger problem of sorting out her friends' cutie marks, however, as I have remarked in my analysis of Magical Mystery Cure's songs, she deftly avoided the mistake she made in Lesson Zero. She was given an assignment by Princess Celestia to "understand and rewrite" Star Swirl the Bearded's unfinished masterpiece, and had, to her knowledge, failed to make any progress. And yet she does not go manic like she did in Lesson Zero, instead choosing to celebrate her life in Ponyville. That opening sequence, when viewed in light of what we know took place the night before, shows that Twilight has grown past placing impossible expectations on herself and projecting them onto other ponies.

By being able to identify the correct problem, Twilight demonstrated her progress in Magical Mystery Cure before she even attempts to solve the problem she identifies. And her attempted solution, too, stands in contrast with her attempted solutions in Lesson Zero and It's About Time. In Lesson Zero, Twilight placed herself under unreasonable time pressure, and so felt she needed a quick fix to her problem. Remember, she feels at the beginning that she needs to "learn a lesson" about friendship to report to the Princess. She quickly loses sight of this objective, however, in her search for a quick fix. "Learn a lesson" subtly morphs into "solve [somepony else's] friendship problem". She approaches each "problem" she identifies as the omniscient lecturer, and leaves disappointed when nopony needs an omniscient lecturer. That's a friendship lesson she could have learned right there: be available to the needs and wants of your friends. Talk and listen to them, not at them. This is the ur-acting technique, by the way, despite what Stanislavskarity would have us believe :smalltongue: But she was not available to the needs and wants of her friends, and had cut herself off even from her own perceived needs and wants in order to service her projections!

It's About Time posed her a problem, in her mind, that demanded omnipotence and omniscience. She did not know what terrible event would happen in the future, and she was determined to prevent it. Of course her plans would be grandiose. Of course they would all fail: Twilight is neither omniscient nor omnipotent. As each plan failed, she came closer and closer to realizing it, but pushed the realization away each time as the responsibility she had taken upon herself weighed more and more heavily.

Magical Mystery Cure again stands in contrast to these two episodes, in that Twilight's plan doesn't involve her shouldering some impossible burden she's constructed for herself. It's Spike, not Twilight, that suggests magical brute-force solutions, and it's Twilight that rejects them. The Twilight of It's About Time would have been all for attempting Zecora's cure for the Cutie Pox, attempting to cast the memory spell that had broken Discord's curse, or attempting to research a counterspell. Her solution is both more beautiful and more subtle: "I may not be able to remind them of who they are, but I can show them what they mean to each other. They'll find the part of themselves that's been lost so they can help the friend they care about so much!" It's a plan fundamentally different from her plans in Lesson Zero or It's About Time. That she was able to arrive at this plan, without having to exhaust all other possible options but simply by reminding herself of her connection with her friends, speaks to her growth.

In Lesson Zero and It's About Time, it was not the situations that backed Twilight into a corner, but Twilight herself. Her own neuroses, which prevented her from correctly identifying her problems and arriving at solutions, were her biggest obstacles. Magical Mystery Cure does not confront her with a less dire or insoluble situation. If anything, it's the reverse! Her problem in Magical Mystery Cure is more insoluble than the (real, not imagined) problems she faced in those episodes. It's a new, strange situation that has deleterious effects on the landscape and the ponies of Ponyville, and which cannot be solved with brute force magic. And yet the most dire of the three situations was solved the most easily. A problem does not become easier to solve the more threatening it becomes; Lesson Zero and It's About Time showed us that by inflating the rather small actual problems to impossible-to-confront dangers. The difference must lie in the pony doing the problem-solving. Twilight by Magical Mystery Cure had grown enough to arrive at the solution without putting herself in the way of her own success.

Yeah, I found it more silly than creepy, myself, but I figure if it's a thing, I should respect its thinginess. Heck, it's better than that creepy Princess Celestia removing her hooves and wiggling her fingers as an Adventure Time reference.

Wait, it's supposed to be creepy? I always thought it was just ... well, I don't actually know. Cute, or just you know, Luna being Luna. Like maybe it's trying to guilt me into staying awake, like saying "you really want to leave this pony alone all night? Think what it might do to her!"

Anyway, the other month I loaned her a pony DVD, first four episodes of S1. Today we were having a talk about it.

Then we have Magical Mystery Cure, where the problem is easier for Twilight (because it's her friends she messed up, not herself) but where she despairs for only a short while and doesn't worry about the fact that she messed up or what consequences will befall her, instead focusing on solving the problem and trying her solution out empirically.

Actually, that ties into a thing I've been thinking about.

How long does MMC take? The deterioration of the farm and the cobwebs in the boutique don't strike me as the kind of thing that would happen overnight, though none of the animals appear to have starved. The best I've been able to come up with is that both "I've Got To Find a Way" and "True, True Friend" span days to weeks, and parts of the latter occur before parts of the former, but that's not an entirely satisfactory answer. Any of you got thoughts?

At the beginning of Rarity's verse, she pulls Applejack over in the boutique, and over the course of the word "trouble" the scene shifts from there to all six trotting down a Ponyville street.

This pretty much matches my analysis. It's not impossible that "I've Got to Find A Way" spans a longer time, but nothing about the narrative or the animation indicates a time skip at that point in the episode.

Well, we're watching a) a cartoon b) musical. The farm is desolate for dramatic emphasis, not because it's an accurate depiction of the state of the farm. The same goes for the apparent absence of the other Apples. Time is malleable when ponies are singing - so is reality.

It been my belief that during MMC reality is more then mutable in the meta sense, but from an in-universe perspective.

Seriously all signs point to Twilight accidentially not just rewriting her friends, but their entire lives. So its why for example there are no pegasi smacking Rarity to stop messing up their weather or any other oddity of six important ponies suddenly being completely diffenent. The rewrote the history/reality of Ponyville as a consequence to meet a condition like "Pinkie is an Apple Farmer" being placed foremost in the logic of reality and over the logic that would dictate it couldn't be so. So where were the rest of the Apples?

Well its not improbable they were parodoxed out existence logically when logic had a seizure.

Given how much Ponyville residents put up with from the mane six on a regular basis, I wouldn't put it past them to accept Rarity messing around with the weather patterns as simply business-as-usual. I mean, I do note that the two most noteable ponies of the six (Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash) were placed where they wouldn't interact with the regular townsfolk, and Rainbow Dash specifically was placed where her distinctive rainbow-contrail would not be seen and tracked down by anyone.

I sure would, Dash leads the weather ponies she is not the only one though as we've seen more then once. It not just the townsfolk, its everything. The devastation and rejuvenation of the farm, absence of family members, property changing hands, and the Elements of Harmony being in play...

Seriously "reality on the fritz" is a concept that explains everything with the fewest problems. More more precisely "X condition is absolutely true" having the highest priority makes it all work out, everything else is overwritten to ensure that truth. Simple!

And I challenge that "regular basis" assertion too. Occasionally (at most) would seem more in line with the actual scope of episodes, with circumstances not clear to the rest of the town most often too.

For instance, the animals and townsponies appear to recognize Fluttershy and Pinkie, respectively, when they show up (though I admit there's no explicit declaration of that before they're restored). Also, it seems... implausible that one could accidentally make a reality-warp such that parts of it can be undone without appearing to affect other parts.

(Also, if history was rewritten, why weren't Twilight and - especially - Spike affected? Why did Fluttershy wait so long after the original casting to leave, if she actually thought she'd experienced all those years of ponies not laughing when she wanted them to? (And why did she want to go by balloon? She's got wings, and we've seen her use them to get to Cloudsdale.))

Having sat down and watched a few episodes again (thanks to the Hub), Animaniacs is actually rather smart and witty at times, which probably helps it a lot with still being appealing to newcomers. Contrary to the media's popular belief, kids are not stupid and do like seeing different ideas rather than the same gags over and over.

The fact that it engages in a lot of non sequitor probably helps a bit as well, as you can watch a random episode and not have to worry about backstory or previous episodes.

And this anything but lazy to me. Imagine if you will a spear that will always strike the heart (http://typemoon.wikia.com/wiki/Gae_Bolg). It does this not through say homing in on the target but by setting the result "always strikes the heart" as true, changing the normal causality of "process-->result" to "result-->process" where because it must achieve the result the spear can does the impossible and will always hit. Because it has already hit then hand reality the bill to work out how and reality has to change to meet the condition.

That's the kind of thing Magical Mystery Cure makes me think of, true impossibilities being actualized.

Second, from my perspective it appears to complicate more things than it simplifies. For instance, the animals and townsponies appear to recognize Fluttershy and Pinkie, respectively, when they show up (though I admit there's no explicit declaration of that before they're restored). Recognize how? Of course they recognize the ponies those ponies still had a prescence. Fluttershy though only interacts (poorly) with the crowd that has Vinyl in it, and Pinkie only does it in the act of being restored, or rather technically immediately after it. Destiny has been fixed, all that misery unhappens like deleting a rough draft with a tragic end and writing a happy ending. Sure there's a spontaneous parade after but Pinkie has done that before.

And normal implausiblity was mercilessly killed when Twilight cast the broken spell, kinda comes with the warping reality bit you know.

Plus our resident omnipotent plot magic was in play each time. If for some reason Twilight had stopped at two or three we might have gotten to explore the incomplete solution. However slowly unweaving the twisting of destiny by untying the five knots in the strings of fate scans conceptually. Each would have fixed a part of the pattern of destiny and all the relevant parts, but not the whole because there was still a twisted string.

This does imply that untwist was hard then the twisting but destruction (or marring) being harder then creation (repair here) is a very familiar and well established concept.

Spike is not clearly unaffected, he doesn't see anything wrong remember. And Twilight evidently got immunity because either she cast the spell, or that's part of how its brokenness was manifested. Like how Marty McFly didn't blink out of existence when he caused his own unbirth but had to fix it so he could be born... to cause the problem in the first place. Paradox, doom, reality torn asunder.

Fluttershy of course is dramatic convenience, with possibly a bit of the same "destiny interference" from normal reality leaking through into the paradox. The nonsensical nature of the broken situation is exactly the nature of the problem. The ponies aren't who they're meant to be because they are unhappy, but because they are not right fundamental level that underpins the surface reality. They are wrong not because their memory and pasts have been screwed around with but because their concept, their underlying motivating idea that shapes the theme that is their story... that's been screwed with.

Everything falls before that distortion because its underpins everything.

And this all is also plays into why Twilight's final completed spell is so remarkable, its successfully playing with the deepest level of magic in a way beyond the normal rules.

Which might take a year or two. The core of it though is that the most fundamental ruling level that dictates everything else is the "idea level" the ruling concept of a thing whatever that might be. Change that and everything must change to match.

It seemed to rewrite reality such that each of the mane 6 was in her "proper" place, and we come in on them essentially lamenting how much they suck at their lives but are doing it anyway because it's their destiny (as indicated by cutie marks).

Animaniacs is amazing because it's a spectacularly well-made show. They managed to parody the Who's on First sketch, mock several popular musical performers, teach some history, and gives kids appealing slapstick comedy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42JPg3y85Ak)all in the same 11 minute sketch. It is sublime.

Second, from my perspective it appears to complicate more things than it simplifies. The animals responded to Fluttershy because she has a natural talent with them that was not wiped out. It was very clear from the scene that they didn't recognize her and she did not recognize them until she was properly restored.

Similarly, we see the townspeople responding to Pinkie due to her skill and talent at mind magic entertainment, and they shout Pinkie only after the slot machine eyes roll and she's fully restored.

(Also, if history was rewritten, why weren't Twilight and - especially - Spike affected? Twilight wasn't affected because she cast the spell and it's affect was that she didn't even realize the changes had happened. Spike is less clear, but could either be immune from proximity to Twilight and the casting or simply accepted Twilight's explanation that all her friends were messed up.

Fluttershy going by balloon is probably indicative of her still being a weak flier and not wanting to fly when her confidence was at such a low level. As for why at that moment?

:elan: Obviously, because it was narratively significant. Why would the story put them at points of their lives where there was minimal conflict and no sense of urgency when it could have Twilight just barely stop Fluttershy at her lowest moment to add more drama?

Spike is not clearly unaffected, he doesn't see anything wrong remember. And Twilight evidently got immunity because either she cast the spell, or that's part of how its brokenness was manifested. Like how Marty McFly didn't blink out of existence when he caused his own unbirth but had to fix it so he could be born... to cause the problem in the first place. Paradox, doom, reality torn asunder.

Fluttershy of course is dramatic convenience, with possibly a bit of the same "destiny interference" from normal reality leaking through into the paradox. The nonsensical nature of the broken situation is exactly the nature of the problem. The ponies aren't who they're meant to be because they are unhappy, but because they are not right fundamental level that underpins the surface reality. They are wrong not because their memory and pasts have been screwed around with but because their concept, their underlying motivating idea that shapes the theme that is their story... that's been screwed with.

Everything falls before that distortion because its underpins everything.

And this all is also plays into why Twilight's final completed spell is so remarkable, its successfully playing with the deepest level of magic in a way beyond the normal rules.

I agree and disagree. Reality warping actually does solve some 90% of the problems but I feel that just saying Reality warping is lazy. Take your Gae Bolg example, they don't just say reality warping but explain how it works.

So let's run with it. I think reality was warped in regards to their identities. They genuinly thought that they thought they were each other with their minds filling the gaps. They kept their own personal traits, like Rarity's artistic skills and Rainbow Dash being impatient, but who they thought they should be, and who everypony else thought they were was changed.

Another thing is that the town's people still kept their memories in a general sense. They knew that the weather had been normal before, but had been altered to think Rarity was in charge. So they were upset and complaining. Same with Fluttershy, they knew she was a funny pony (which is why they gathered to watch her) but now she just wasn't being entertaining.

So why was Rarity dealing with weather when Rainbow Dash's talent is speed and skill? A couple reasons;

1. Rainbow Dash does take her job seriously and only goofs off when the job is practically done (as in it takes her under a minute to do.) So Rarity wasn't going to perform any stunts when the weather wasn't right.

2. Lot's of Rainbow Dash's tricks actually involve weather as is.

Still she somehow got a power boost, just so the spell wouldn't break from it being impossible.

I figured they planned it out so that the only unicorn affected would end up with the weather job, making it theoretically possible (Applejack and Pinkie could not really have controlled the weather, and Fluttershy doing it would be boring). Dashie switching with Fluttershy wasn't preordained, but it's also likely that Dash wouldn't have messed up the Applefarm all that badly, and the spell seemed to want to avoid direct swaps so Dash switching with Rarity and vice versa didn't happen. Too bad there, seeing Dash make dresses would have been funny.

Reality warping is how it works, there is no process by which one can shift cause and effect like that. Its why its a supreme mystery.

Really the Nasuverse runs on reality warping, that's what it does when it "applies concepts" and various other things, its changing the "natural" order of things around. Of course there reality also fights back which is why say Shirou's swords will disappear and makes actually doing large scale warping the next thing to impossible.

Really this applies to most magic, willing something to change. The degree varies from "do anything you want" to "replicate a natural process to bring about result" and about a billion others. But there generally.

(Cases where this aren't so mean magic user just knowledgeable like an engineer, this is fairly rare since it would be anyone could say "Abracadabra" and get magic. Generally special talent is required, ergo the capacity to change reality)

Wait, it's supposed to be creepy? I always thought it was just ... well, I don't actually know. Cute, or just you know, Luna being Luna. Like maybe it's trying to guilt me into staying awake, like saying "you really want to leave this pony alone all night? Think what it might do to her!"
I figured it was a "Can't sleep, clown will eat me" sort of thing. Then again, I slept, too, so... *shrug* Anyone's explanation is as good as mine.

Contrary to the media's popular belief, kids are not stupid and do like seeing different ideas rather than the same gags over and over.

^This. Kids are surprisingly intelligent at picking up complex plot lines. My daughter was able to follow shows like Transformers Prime and she had to explain to me what Dark Energon was.
And Animaiacs is chock full of adult jokes hidden among the more kid-friendly stuff for the rest of us. Though really, I think my daughter still laughs at some of those too.

I have problems with this approach. First, it's simply lazy - "A wizard did it! From beyond the grave!"

But a wizard did do it. Two of them, technically if you could Starswirl and Twilight.

Also, yeah. Reality warping, as described by Soras in a Nasuverse style is pretty much what makes sense to me, too. It's much more Mage as well.

How does it work? Rarity is a weather pony with a weather cutie mark. She is terrible at the job but does it because it's what she believes her place in the world to be. This is the way things are and the way things have always been, for her whole life and also since a few minutes ago when Twilight cast a spell she didn't understand. Both of those things are equally true.

Then she got better and was not and had never been a weather pony.
It's kind of Timey Wimey, but more so it's important to remember that Time (like Space), is a lie.

So, I managed to write about two lines of quest tonight, before I ended up getting side-tracked world-building again. I thought I was going to be able to keep that to a minimum for this adventure, but no... Off we go into establishing that the not-Mayan culture was essentially conquered and assimilated by the not-Aztec-wizards...

Because, of course, I started to write a description of farmland, and then of course ended up going to wiki to look up Aztec farming methods as so ascertain what that would look like (and from there, general mesoamerican cultures) and realising I probably needed to expand from just Aztec-stealing and thus nick elements from the larger and better documented Maya as well (and, for that matter, cloak the appropriate islands with forest and not leave them as savanna to better fit); which lead to the entirely reasonable conquest/assimilation scenario, since of course Dreemaenhyll works on real-world timescales and nation-building (and incidently clarifying something that was essentially some dungeon dressing in the process....)

Can never get away from the exposition, can we...?

(Well, s'me own fault, if I will insist on having to set the adventure in a region only barely realised because of my Quest Image being a church up the side of a river valley and that reminding me of the jungle campaign world I came up with walking down another river valley and it snowballing from there... Is my quest-writing process just over-complicated or what...?)

At least I've finished the next chapter of II at last, just need one more read-through or two to make sure everything is nice and polished ... when it's not the middle of the night. Had hoped to finish it today, but I guess tomorrow will do. Taken almost 3 weeks, though. Definitely wish I had done better planning on this story.

Anyway, it's ended up at almost 7000 words, the longest chapter yet. Which makes me wonder, how come it seems the last chapters of my stories are always the longest? It's strange.

Well, I imagine it has to do with the fact that the last chapters are when the most stuff happens. And more stuff happening means that more words are necessary to talk about that stuff. Which means longer chapters.

(To clarify, I mean more stuff happening at once, when its not appropriate to separate it into different chapters.)

Also, yeah. Reality warping, as described by Soras in a Nasuverse style is pretty much what makes sense to me, too. It's much more Mage as well.

How does it work? Rarity is a weather pony with a weather cutie mark. She is terrible at the job but does it because it's what she believes her place in the world to be. This is the way things are and the way things have always been, for her whole life and also since a few minutes ago when Twilight cast a spell she didn't understand. Both of those things are equally true.

Then she got better and was not and had never been a weather pony.
It's kind of Timey Wimey, but more so it's important to remember that Time (like Space), is a lie.

If you want more details, read some Mage the Awakening.
(Effect clearly involved the Time and Fate arcana. Probably not Mind though.)

Two points. First, I concur with Tiki that the effect was switching lives, as indicated by the Cutie Marks. Rainbow Dash was a weather pony even though she got her cutie mark from racing, and Rarity taking over her life became a weather pony.

Second, I think the spell made use of some Space magic, not just Fate/Time. It certainly shifted destinies, but it seemed to jump around some sympathetic connections as well.

Yeah it's pretty good. Parts of it are remixed better than others. I don't really think the guitar solo at the 4:00 minute mark fits the character of the piece, but if we get Discord in a tweed suit out of this I'll be happy.

So, I managed to write about two lines of quest tonight, before I ended up getting side-tracked world-building again. I thought I was going to be able to keep that to a minimum for this adventure, but no... Off we go into establishing that the not-Mayan culture was essentially conquered and assimilated by the not-Aztec-wizards...

Because, of course, I started to write a description of farmland, and then of course ended up going to wiki to look up Aztec farming methods as so ascertain what that would look like (and from there, general mesoamerican cultures) and realising I probably needed to expand from just Aztec-stealing and thus nick elements from the larger and better documented Maya as well (and, for that matter, cloak the appropriate islands with forest and not leave them as savanna to better fit); which lead to the entirely reasonable conquest/assimilation scenario, since of course Dreemaenhyll works on real-world timescales and nation-building (and incidently clarifying something that was essentially some dungeon dressing in the process....)

Can never get away from the exposition, can we...?

(Well, s'me own fault, if I will insist on having to set the adventure in a region only barely realised because of my Quest Image being a church up the side of a river valley and that reminding me of the jungle campaign world I came up with walking down another river valley and it snowballing from there... Is my quest-writing process just over-complicated or what...?)

Your forgetting your own debut episode there Trixie but I suppose that's understandable.

Where Twilight directly states her special talent is "magic itself" which is why she (at the time of the episode) know 25 types of tricks/magic. This is after Spike explains that most unicorns only know a little magic related to their special talent.

Now "most" is not all and we don't know how that all works out. Also we can infer by her constant practice this is not the magical sharingan, though she has cast spells on the fly before (time travel) it seems risky, difficult, etc. What makes a spell easy or difficult for this show we should also expect to be a bit arbitrary.

However point being its still very clear Twilight is different and special as a magic user beyond just being really studious.

My personal impression is she's something like a unicorn Wizard in a world of unicorn Sorcerers.

The disparity is greater than that, more along the lines of most unicorns having a couple racial SLAs while the more powerful magic-users have taken class levels. To illustrate what I mean, if I were to stat the ponies as Pathfinder characters (which I do - yeah, I'm a sad person :smallfrown:...although, they might make a good resource for GMs wanting to include pony NPCs...) I'd peg Trixie as of Magic Duel, without the Alicorn Amulet, as a level 6 sorcerer. Most unicorns are not nearly as adept at magic as her; if they were, her story in Boast Busters wouldn't even have been plausible.

Caucasian Sparkles still seem off to me, but those are excellent.
And I don't know, I like the rainbow dashes and they look like they are clearly the same person to me. A touch on the waifish side, perhaps. I think that's just how the artist tends though, perhaps?

Yeah, I definitely prefer my Twilight black.

I kinda like the first Dash alright, though I do feel she's a bit too manly. Also not sure I like how it seems her hair is tied up in the back.

The second Dash is ... I'm not too fond of her shirt-thingy, whatever that's called. Also she looks too tall for my tastes. I definitely think human Dash should be the smallest of the six.

Now I want to draw my own humanized mane 6, except I know they would all suck :smallredface:

Pah! Rolemaster's complexity is vastly, vastly over-stated.

(The combined works of D&D drastically out-size it, and even after twenty years of RM, I still have more lists and additions to D&D than to Rolemaster! Rolemaster is actually little more involved than 3.x (certainly quicker than a lot of "simpler" systems (e.g. Traveller) which have innumerable rolls to make for background and background events and so on and so on...) Doesn't take that much longer to do an RM character than a 3.5 one, in practise.)

I mentioned Tax Evasion because it is my go-to for the skill that always just stood out among Rolemaster's skills as a prime example of "what in the actual heck, no seriously Rolemaster, how in the heck did that become a skill and what on earth were the circumstances behind it?" more than most of them. I mean, seriously, when in the heck do PCs pay taxes at the best of times...?!

(I could have have said Midwifery, but one of my players serious insisting on taking that for his Jedi, because he swears blind that if someone didn't have it I'd have created a situation where it would be needed. (This had always mystified me a bit, as the thought would have genuinely never crossed my mind. Hell, even with the possibility open, I've never seen fit to use it, so...!)

I'm of the opinion that Zebras and ponies in the setting could interbreed, so I wouldn't say Zecora is a separate species.

Zebras and other equines can interbreed (zebroid is the term you're looking for) and they are most definately different species...

(Also, Ligers.)

While a common definition of "species" is "thing capable of interbreeding with itself" this is not an ironclad (or even always very accurate) definition. Basically because Biology Is Bloody Complicated, "species" is actually a fairly nebulous term in practise and there is no universal (or universally acceptable answer.)

Also, it suddenly hit me, I was going about my searches to see if I could track down some hard evidence of any of Spike's temperature related physical behavior the wrong way, so I tried a different route and had some success. I haven't managed to find him shivering (though it comes up so often in fanfic, I could have sworn blind I'd seen it at somepoint in Winter Warp Up or Owl's Well, but I didn't in the cusory glance I have them).

Buuut - I did find evidence of him sweating. (Stress-related, admittedly, in Just For Sidekicks.) Reptiles don't have sweat glands; nor to amphibians. Neither do birds, of course, so while lack of sweat glands is not indication of ectothermy, possession of them is an indicator of endothermy, because their function is temperature regulation.

And he also blushes, which again is an emotional response - but again, one that comes from essentially a temperature regulation function.

(You could, I suppose, write those off as like sweat-drops in anime, but I think MLP's style tends not to go towards that kind of meta-signals; character's cartoon-over-reactions tend to actually be treated as being "in-universe" (see Twilight's Pinkie Keen Rapidash moment) than they do in (some) anime, e.g. Pokemon or something.)

So it seems to me there's a reasonable amount of evidence to show that Spike is at least reasonably endothermic. Milage, as usual and all that, of course.

Works for me!

And, just for the record, I personally reckon dragons generally would be somewhere between ecto- and endothermy.

Personally?

I find the D&D description of them being self regulating via hax, temperature-wise, much more fitting personally.
Simply put, dragons in my barely used D&D 4e Draconomicon thingy draw heat and to a degree energy via metabolising magic. They literally channel weird elemental energy through their freaky dragon hearts or something, syphoning off some of this potential to maintain a comfortable temperature almost entirely regardless of external circumstances.

Kind of like Warm-Blooded Plus.

The above of course is a terrible synopsis of the description in the book and I shaln't be double checking it, but you get the idea.

I can't help but feel that this vague concept works so much better for Equestrian Dragons than any scientific explanation. I don't know, I just prefer the idea of it working because spike is literally channeling magic through his body.

Every so often, an eight year old boy and girl neighbouring me come by my house. The girl loves colouring in ponies and loves my art, so I'm always giving her art lessons, often by picking out some pony lineart and showing her how to use SAI to colour it. Here's an example from today:

That would be a terrible episode.

Is what I would say if the writers didn't have the track record they do. But, man, twir track record is awesome. Pony could make Twilight reading the WSJ and fretting her stocks seem hilarious. Or terribly serious. Or even absurd. They're good at that stuff.

When ponies start singing is the cue to stop thinking about linear temporal progression and Euclidean geometry, and just sit back and accept it.

I remember once in a GURPS super hero style campaign, my character had Origami as a hobby skill. Pretty much 110% flavor, except for when the "Gambit" style super finally added the ability to throw *ANYTHING* for damage.

I've wanted to do something about my website for a long time, and decided it was high time to move to a new host as well, because

1. Old host seems a bit ... old and stagnant. Also a bit pricy.

The art is really good. There does seem to be a semblance of a story there as well, but I can't really tell where it's going either. Presumably some kind of Twilight as a fugitive setup, with the other Mane 6 in various positions of authority or skill to find her, of which we're seeing one clash of methods between Rarity and Rainbow Dash. Yeah, though what I parsed from it was like... a kind of inquisition gone wrong and the friends fighting over the best way to fix the problem. That last one with Rarity is a big tear jerker.

Do you think the average pony knows the sort of powers that co-exist in their world? After all, it wasn't until they researched heavily that the Mane six discovered what the Alicorn Amulet was. And on that note, who made all these things? An amulet that corrupts the wearer whilst granting them incredible power doesn't seem like the thing the average pony would make.

I feel like there's a few fics in here somewhere, some sort of plot involving a pony's discovery of the mystical tools all around them. Sparked one day when they decide to take their favorite doorstop to a pawn shop and discover it to be the long-lost Mystical Brick of Atlantis

My Trixie fanfic, Outlaw Mares (http://www.fimfiction.net/story/82063/outlaw-mares-1-a-hoof-full-of-trixie) uses that as one of its mane themes. There are lots of powerful magical items out there, most made by either bad ponies or decent ponies with a poor way of thinking their ideas through, and while society in general goes on not noticing this detail, there are groups who do take a heavy interest in recovering these things.

Not all of them for agreeable reasons. :smallcool:

Yeah, that's the main headcanon I read about the Alicorn Amulet. I had a different idea though, that Sombra didn't make it, but took it from someone else who did make it. :smallbiggrin:

That reminds me of the conclusion to "A dream of Dawn" which was a good story that seriously gave me the impression that it was winging it.

Speaking of Pony dreams I had a weird one where I was a character in DOTA (a game I've never played) and I got hired by someone whose giant robotic crab was stolen by a weird crow-vulture monster of epic proportions. So I went through this weird manision/hotel (the nest was at the top) where a trio of children had accidently transformed all of the people into teddy bears. Once I reached the bird I randomly transformed into Fluttershy (or I was Fluttershy all along, I'm not sure) and untangled the bird from this steel cord it had tangled itself in before becoming it's friend.

Seems like Equestria is pretty used, as a area. At the very least, a genuine reality warper ruled the place for who knows how long, and Discord does not seem to be a creature who would care where the everflowing cup of water he just poofed into existance ended up. There's also the Everfree Forest, which is inhabited by monsters galor and has at least one ruin. There's also proof that there is at least a precident for evil ponies, with Sombra McSauron slaving it up in the north, along with genuine grade a corrupting magic.

Chances are, Sombra is not the only evil unicorn who could use dark magic, and Trixie is presumably not the first pony to track down a powerful magic item. Most ponies probably go about there daily lives without thinking about it. I mean, really, Ponyville is brisk walk away from the Everfree, and it's not like it dominates there thoughts.

I suspect it probably had more to do with being a bit obscure as a reference these days. Especially in the target demographic. And as an awesomely horrendous pun its not terribly subtle, or much good if you don't get the joke. Or just simply working titles being changed as a matter of course.

They had different standards in the first season, didn't they? Education criteria that they didn't use during Ss2-3? If so, it's not so much a problem. Especially because Sissy is occasionally still used to refer to one's sister, where egghead is only an insult for smart people.

Obviously but I like to think that given the content of the episode there might well have been no charge for permission.

However I was referring more to that there is very little "no way" under the law with IP stuff. First off as a terribly awesome pun it can make a case for parody which is the about the clearest area of fair use. Second lawsuits are expensive and do you Geordi is swimming in the millions he made off the show as executive producer? Most of this stuff doesn't mean a thing if no one pursues it.

People who have done various measurement estimates figure that the typical adult pony is around 3 to 4 feet tall at the top of their heads and weight about 150-250 lbs with Celestia being around 6 to 7 feet tall at the top of her head and around 400-500 lbs. That may sound like a lot but you most likely think in terms of height to weight ratios for lanky bipeds. One of the reasons we can spook or intimidate fairly large animals is that usually an animal our height would typically mass 3 or 4 times what we do so we can fool other animals into thinking we're much tougher than we actually are. Given that in pony soceity even librarians and fashonistas are fit creatures of almost pure muscle the average pony could probably kick the average humans ass all over the place.

Sign I'm getting' more ancient: haven't got the energy or enthusiasm to stay up all night to watch all of Comic Relief anymore.

(Still, was goin' pretty good at the last count, up to £66 million - that's pretty damn good whichever way you slice it! Be nice if it manages to continue the two-decade-old trend of achieving a higher and higher total every time (last time they got £74 million on the night (and £108 million, all told), so it's possible.))

I suspect, of course, that with it now being twenty-five years old, my generation (and the next one) have grown up with it, so it's a very visible entitiy. Jessie J, a singer I'd never heard of1, who shaved all her hair off for Comic Relief made the point that she was only just born when it started.)

Makes one proud to be British, that every time Comic Relief comes around, we collectively raise a stupendous amount of money for the people that really, really need it.

Almost gives me hope in humanity...
