Sound Sword
Evocation [Sonic]
Level: Bard 3, Clr 4, Sor/Wiz 4
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Components: V, S
Range: Personal
Effect: Sword-like wavelength
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: Reflex negates, Fortitude negates (see text)
Spell Resistance: Yes

A wavering length of humming, yellow energy springs forth from your hand. You wield this bladelike beam as if it were a scimitar of your size, dealing sonic damage rather than slashing damage. Attacks with the sound sword are melee touch attacks. On a successful critical hit, the sound sword deals double damage as normal to the target, but also to all creatures (except you) and objects within 10ft. Damage dealt to objects in this way may be prevented by those carrying them with a successful Reflex save. A creature struck by your critical hit must succeed at a Fortitude save to avoid becoming knocked prone and permanently deafened. Since the blade is immaterial, your Strength modifier does not apply to the damage; however it deals +1 damage per two caster levels (max +10).

Against a brittle or crystalline object or crystalline creature the sound sword deals damage as though it were two sizes larger with a bonus of +1 damage per caster level. A creature holding fragile objects can negate damage to them with a successful Reflex save.

For the duration of the spell's effect, listen checks made within your reach are nearly impossible, suffering a -8 penalty. Every 5ft beyond your reach, this penalty is reduced by 2.

Sound sword cannot be cast within the area of a silence spell or similar effect.
