FAQ

Q. Where did you get the idea to do this?

A. This started as a game (guess which character had the most appearances, then second most, etc.), but once all characters with three or more appearances were guessed, someone had the idea of keeping a running total, just for curiosity's sake. Then someone thought it might belong here instead of silly games, so n11 moved the list here instead of there. When n11's thread got 'ported over to the new forum, the formatting changes made it difficult to read. Plus, n11 hasn't shown up for quite a few comics, so the list was falling hopelessly out of date. So i have reformatted the list for the new forums and updated it. N11 hasn't shown up in the new incarnation of the forums, so now i'm doing it. You can see the second iteration of the thread at Number of Character Appearances (improved!), and the third iteration of the thread at Number of Character Appearances III (and the fourth iteration of the thread at Number of Character Appearances IV). The first iteration of the thread was purged when the boards were purged in february 2009.

Q. What counts as an appearance?

A. Any likeness of the character being visible (so elan's appearance on nale's blueprint counts, and belkar's self-portrait in blood counts) and any dialog from a character, even if "off-panel" or invisible (so the strip where the party is in the invisibility sphere counts for each of the main characters). Also, when someone appears as someone else (for instance when nale impersonates elan), that counts as an appearance for both the character in disguise and the character being impersonated.

Q. What's with the stuff in red and blue?

A. Red means an appearance in bonus strips from the books (including the coloring books), the kickstarter extras, and the strips published in dragon magazine. Each page of the book or magazine is treated as a separate strip. Blue means an appearance on multiple pages of a multi-page comic.

Thanks to fawkes (aka mechafox), paladin carver, porthos, flame of anor, spod, gift jeraff, rms oceanic, 2.5 cats, vargtass, ti'esar, yendor, and all the other members who helped to compile all those bonus appearances!

Q. If two characters have the same number of appearances, in what order do you list them?

A. Characters are listed first by the number of standard appearances (as indicated with black numbers), and then alphabetically.

Q. What happened to the death notices?

A. In prior iterations of this thread, we used superscripted letters to indicate who killed or dismissed certain characters. But we decided that it was really not part of this thread's mission to serve as a running obituary. If you are interested in that, may we suggest the graveyard?

Q. Why haven't you listed the goblins/hobgoblins/zombies/ghouls/ghasts/azure city guards?

A. A character only gets listed if it is recognizable as an individual or if it's a recurring distinct group (such as the flumphs or the demon roaches). The indistinct masses do not get listed.

Q. How did you choose the name for :mitd:?

A. Monster in the darkness is a frequently used name. There are others, but there's nothing that has been definitively established as his name. Until we get a firm name or identity, we will continue to call him "monster in the darkness".

Q. What about the ?

A. If a character appears only once and is not named, then it doesn't get listed. Otherwise, the list would be completely unmanageable.

Q. Who is ted?

A. The appearances of a goblin caster in #90, #93, #105, and #107 could be the same caster, given the limited context, and he could be given the same “ted” first mentioned in #90, but the giant has specified no such connection was ever intended. We're listing him anyway because we think it's clever. :smalltongue:

Q. Hey didn't you list sabine's fiendish form as an alternate form? And wasn't this faq question previously about that?

A. Yes. Sabine used to be listed with her red-leathered adventurer form (the one she originally appeared in) as her "natural" form and her fiendish form as a magical alteration. But now she has appeared in her fiendish form more often than her leather-clad form, so i've switched it around. Her fiendish form is now her natural form and the red-leather clad adventurer is one of her alternate magical forms (along with the cop, geisha, schoolgirl, guardsman, and fortune-teller disguises she's assumed).

Q. Why is banjo listed as a character? Banjo is an inanimate object!

A. Blasphemy!! Seriously, you're probably right. But we like banjo.

Q. Why isn't o-chul's first appearance listed in strip 290 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0290.html) (fourth frame)?

A. That is not o-chul. That is "fellow medium-sized paladin".

Q. Why is jirix' first appearance listed as strip 459 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0459.html)? That cleric's holy symbol looks different and strip 704 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0704.html) implies that when o-chul killed him it was the first time he had died.

A. In commentary in don't split the party, the giant said he felt jirix was the cleric in the tower.

Q. Why is shlubbo noname-zaki from strip 435 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html) listed? That's not his real name.

A. Well, it could be his real name. Either way, it's funny.

Q. What does not count as an "alternate magical forms"?

A. We don't treat views of characters through scrying spells or devices, or characters covered in auras due to spellcasting or having a spell cast upon them, or conditions with no obviously magical cues (such as paralysis) as alternate magical forms.

Q. Why doesn't paralysis (such as from [i]hold person) count as an alternate magical form?

A. We decided that since paralysis does not include any visual cues in the comic (other than absurd posturing), it should not be counted.

Q. What does not count as an "other interesting alteration"?

A. We don't treat corpses, changes in age, or costuming as interesting alterations.

Q. Why is Wrecan bolded?

Mark Monack, who went by Wrecan on these forums, was the curator of this thread in its second through fourth editions (a total tenure of about six and a half years). In that time he was also a well-respected member of the forums. As discussed in this (http://www.giantitp.com/index.html#6eam4vhlOtdyflgooaB) news post, he died in 2013, and the Giant decided to name a character after him in tribute. He first appeared in strip #986 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0986.html) alongside the kickstarter cameo character, Veldrina. Strip #1025 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1025.html), which appears to be his last major speaking appearance, contains a number of tributes to him. The strip's title, "Mark of Distinction", includes his name. In reference to this thread, he mentions counting the number of times each legacy bearer is mentioned in his book on Weapons of Legacy. He also mentions that he likes to study obscure martial lore, which may be a reference to the Class (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?4912-Class-and-Level-Geekery-II) and (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?61354-Class-and-Level-Geekery-III-(some-spoiler-s)) Level (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?95005-Class-and-Level-Geekery-IV-(some-spoiler-s)) Geekery (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?125953-Class-and-Level-Geekery-V-(some-spoilers-)) thread, which he also curated in its second through fifth editions. Finally, his exchange with Roy at the end of strip #1025 is in part a means for the Giant to bid farewell to the actual Wrecan, as well as for the readers (and Roy) to bid farewell to the character.

Okay...I find it a little worrisome that you started this without waiting for any sort of consensus on the last thread. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14910422)

Yes, it does, but it will also get the qualifier (as illusion) and possibly be listed under interesting alterations.

Do we list Redcloak with one eye in this one? We can't see it because his head is too hidden behind the door, but unless some weird twist is shown there's little reason to believe he's not wearing his eyepatch.

Doesn't count if it is an illusion of Xykon, which it could be easily.

Given that there is literally no in-comic evidence (yet:smalltongue:) for it being an illusion, you could just as easily have said that about any other time Xykon showed up (until he started killing people.)

He gets listed as if he was the real thing. Unless we get SOME evidence that he MIGHT be an illusion, and then we can add it as an alternate form. Right now, the only evidence we have that he is an illusion is "some people are speculating..."

Agreed. If Xykon turns out to be an illusion, or RC regenerated the eye while we were not looking, then we can go back and update the list. But I think presuming status quo is more likely to be the right choice in the long run (i.e. requiring fewer updates).

Belkar Bitterleaf, Elan, Haley Starshine, Mr. Scruffy, Redcloak (with one eye), Roy Greenhilt, Xykon

Given that the heroes appear to be just standing in place and drooling, everything they're doing would be an illusion, too (i.e., they're not actually running around and swinging at phantasms). So this should probably count as an (as illusion) alteration for everyone.

That's the second appearance of Banjo's Love Interest.
I have no idea if the kobold next to Zz'dtri is supposed to be Yukyuk or just a new nameless kobold-slot-filler.
Does this require a name change for Elan's Mother? Right now we're calling her Elan's Mom, but since it's spelt with capital letters in this comic Elan's Mother seems to be the closest thing she's got to a name.

EDIT: @Sunken Valley: Regarding Malack, we don't track costume changes. EDIT: Also Elan, Nale, Sabine and Thog as blueprint painting. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0255.html)Which is really odd, since I'm noticing these just because they are given as examples in the FAQ. They should be in there somewhere, but I can't seem to find them.

Weird indeed. I'll add them.

Quick questions: shouldn't "Redcloak's illusion with wrong eye" listed 3 times (strips 885 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0885.html), 886 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0886.html), 887 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0887.html))?
in 885 only "Redcloak (with one eye)" got credited, but if it was the normal Redcloak with eye-patch, we should see some piece of the eye-patch-band there. (Because the side with the missing eye is lower, e.g. in 827 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0827.html))
From the following strips, I think it should be clear that it is the same in all three strips.

Those are just wounds. We can't count those, since everyone that gets into a fight gets them; it's Rich's way of showing HP. Yes, Belkar still has them because the team no longer has a reliable healer. But we can't start adding "Roy (with one scratch)", "Roy (with two scratches)", etc. ad nauseam.

We've never listed injuries as alterations before, unless entire body parts are lost. O-chul does not have an alteration slot for "more scars than one".

I hope this hasn't already been complied, but based on your information I made a formal measure of gender distribution in OOTS based on character appearances (in the main comic, not counting extras):

Male (2885-68%)
Protagonists (1630)
Major Characters (595)
Frequent Characters (256)
Minor and Infrequent Characters (404)
Female (785-18%)
Protagonists (431)
Major Characters (143)
Frequent Characters (39)
Minor and Infrequent Characters (172)
Unknown (594-14%)
Protagonists (349)
Major Characters (74)
Frequent Characters (52)
Minor and Infrequent Characters (119)
Total (4264)
Note: Banjo isn’t counted in any of these totals.

I wasn't really expecting such lopsided results, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I don't want Rich to butcher the story to even it out. Although having V identify as a female would change the data like so:

Male (2885-68%)
Female (1134-26%)
Unknown (245-6%)

So that'd be pretty cool! Not collected with any intent in critiquing gender in OOTS though. OOTS is pretty solid on that front from what I can tell. Just trying to generate more trivia. :smalltongue:

Darn it, some one already compiled all of that data and analyzed it already. Better than I did, I might add. :P

Including the deaths was pretty smart to do too. I'm kind of sad that every time a woman in the comic gains some sort of importance, she disappears. Tsukiko, Therkla and Miko were Killed Off For Real, Celia was Put on A Bus and Hilgya is suffering from Chuck Cunningham Syndrome. Which leaves us with Haley, Sabine, Lien, Kazmui, Niu and Julia. So as far as humanoid female characters with more than ten appearances to their credit go, almost half of them are effectively removed from the story.

That's not really exclusive to females. That's just how things go in episodic stories - characters come and go. And Celia certainly wasn't Put on a Bus, if we're quoting TV Tropes - she's a recurring character.

I personally wouldn't do it for a while (if ever) - it is still to early to say for sure what is happing with Durkon. (Maybe we will still follow him like Roy when he died? Or maybe he will in a few strips have his free will back?)
And in this case I would err on the side of protagonist (if only to honor Durkon).

Calling it a Silicon Elemental would follow the established naming convention, as well as the title which is printed right on its chest.

I mean, if a seahorse showed up in the comic, we'd call it a seahorse, never mind that they aren't actually horses. That's just what they're called.

Also, Varsuvius (with magical gag).
I was wondering about that -- is a magical gag an interesting alteration?

Put differently, is having a magic gag over your mouth an alteration any more than having your body held by a magic hand (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0653.html) is?

I don't think it counts as interesting. The FAQ says this, which is nearly the same thing:

We don't treat...characters covered in auras due to...having a spell cast upon them...as alternate magical forms.

You never know! Shojo has appeared a handful of times since his death in Mr. Scruffy/Belkar illusions/hippie dream quests.

Maybe Malack will appear to Durkon. Or he could pop up in flashbacks narrated by Tarquin, as he has before.

I say they should count the same as corpses. They are the literal remains of the character, after all, just an unusually altered form. I'd say they should also be listed as an alternate form if we choose to count them.

Are corpses considered an appearance, though? I honestly cannot remember.

FAQ has this: "A. We don't treat corpses, changes in age, or costuming as interesting alterations."

Based on this, it is an appearance, but not an interesting alteration. I think it makes sense to treat ashes the same as corpses.

If ashes were an interesting alteration, the thread would need to list Kubota (dusted), Young Black Dragon (dusted), etc.

*

As a possibly needless hypothetical, if someone's ashes got carried around in an urn, would we still want to count that?

Thanks for the reminder; I totally didn't think of checking the FAQ.

IMO, though, corpses look far, far more similar to living people than do piles of ashes. I'd say you've experienced a far more visually significant alteration of appearance after having been turned into a pile of ashes than you have after, say, having had your throat slit. So I can see a much stronger argument for listing piles of ashes as an interesting alteration than for listing corpses as one.

Edit: As to the urn, I'd say we'd only do so if the ashes were visible in the urn. Otherwise it's like listing Roy's appearance just because the wagon carrying his corpse is visible.

Easily possible for Malack to become a major character, assuming a) book appearances count and b) the rumours regarding a Linear Guild/Tarquin prequel volume are correct.

All that's needed for Malack to become a major character is his ashes appearing next episode, Nale at some point giving a flashback to his youth (perhaps revealing why he began to hate Malack) and Tarquin at some point giving a flashback to some part of his past.

This doesn't follow. If Tarquin has decided that the arena/circus-goers aren't going to see the allosaurus for a few weeks, it makes perfect sense to use it on a military operation away from the city - it would be a waste of resources just laying around making no profit. If you know the circus ain't going to use it, you might as well loan it out for the period.

I don't think it's the same one from before. Well, could be, but there's no evidence.

After all, there are two allosaurs on this page. We know for a fact that one of them is a previously unseen allosaur. Why assume that the other one is the one from the games? Just by its color? If we can see one new allosaur, why not two? Have we heard about an allosaur shortage in the EoB?

If four more allosaurs come out of that gate, will it still seem like one of them must be the one from the games?

(I'd also question the wisdom of using the same large dangerous carnivore in military operations and the circus -- seems like the latter might undermine the training from the former. But perhaps not. That's just speculation.)

Chronos
2013-08-14, 09:21 AM
I would agree that the allosauri are sufficiently generic that we can't identify them. If Tarquin were seen riding one, and then again seen riding one in his next appearance, sure, that's his personal mount allosaurus. But not just one that happens to look similar to one we've seen in a completely different context.

Honestly, I see no reason to not add this. There is no reason to believe they are different persons, considering they are similar in every way.

Well, I think The Giant would use same Allosaurus design twice (like what he did with all other dinosaurs) if that's just standard design. Instead he created another with a distinctive design. I'll delete it if see another one with same design, but for now I prefer it to stay. Ofcourse, it's just me...

That's a good argument with respect to creating distinctive designs. Still, it seems to me like they have the same body shape, stripe pattern, etc, with the only difference being skin color...?

But, again, I do think you make a nice point.

A double check would be appreciated.

One thing we need to discuss in this thread I think:

As I said above, we see one of the Linear Guild kobolds in the beginning. Is there a way to differentiate them? Especially since one seems to die with a different one in the masquerade ball?

Gift Jeraff
2013-08-15, 02:44 PM
Yokyok has facial hair like in the main continuity. The other kobold is first seen with a weapon similar (identical?) to Yikyik's, and he's always wearing the same clothes so I think it's him all the time. He also lacks Yukyuk's speech patterns (what little we saw of it).

And I already see you have something I missed: Phil's date appearing on another page.

Also, the turban guy actually has 4 appearances already.

Porthos
2013-08-15, 03:00 PM
Well, I know about the facial hair, which is why I included Yokyok from the ball scene. The question I have is that Yikyik or Yukyuk?

I suppose since Elan hadn't met Yukyuk yet, it might not be him. But that's might be too beholden to continuity. :smallwink:

Is there any way to tell the difference between Yikyik and Yukyuk at a glance? Though the weapon bit you mention is a good point.

If the list agrees it's Yikyik in all cases, I'll concur.

Anyway, here is my updated list:

Two points:

- I thought Skeletor was Xykon dressed as Skeletor

I've thought about that. But then how do we know it's not just a random skeleton?

Besides, he's 'on duty' so I don't think he'd be dressed up in costume. I just peg it as one of the many cameos that Rich puts into his work.

ETA::: Actaually, he is drinking though isn't he?

On the one hand, that means he's not 'on duty'. OTOH, Xykon is famous for not being able to drink. Makes me think it is Skeletor in that case.

- Someone is dressed as the Ice King in the background, Or maybe it's just Ice King

AHA! That's who they were talking about in the discussion thread. I'm unfamiliar with the character.

That is who I had marked as a shard of glass, since I couldn't make it out very well.

Yes, that's definately right there. Thanks for the correction. I'll go edit it in.

A correction to my masqurade scene list, which I will edit in my other posts:

Someone mentioned that Hilgya's husband was in the masquerade scene and I took it as given without checking. But as was later noted that isn't him but instead is "Kaboom" Redaxe.

That's what I get for not checking. :smallwink:

When the kobold first appeared, he had a (shortsword?) like Yikyik, and his brawl with Hank mirrored Belkar vs. Yikyik. When he later appears at the masquerade and final shot, he has the exact same clothes. Yikyik and Yukyuk never wore the same clothes, and Yukyuk never used a bladed weapon so I maintain that the kobold is always supposed to be Yikyik.

Where those people we saw in the balcony in the masquerade new? Like I said, I can't recall them.

This reminds me:

I don't think we count inside title pages, do we? I seem to recall it being disallowed before. That's why I didn't count it on my list as a page number.

A couple other things on the masquerade:

The character you have listed as "Therkla's father" is more likely the Grand Larcenist, who tried to hit on Haley in 425 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0425.html). Also note the aftershadow, which Therkla's father doesn't have. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0555.html)

The lizardfolk talking to Amon-Zora on page 8 is Ambassador Gourntonk.

I also don't recognize the people with Rodriguez, the shadowdancer, or Tarquin's shoulder-pad-wearing ally. I think they're new characters.

As can be most clearly seen on page 9 (the first panel with Elan in the pineapple suit), Skeletor does not have a red glow in his eyesockets. This makes me think he's not Xykon.

I'm not sure the guard next to Elan should be listed at all, as he's a generic mook, but if he is, his first appearance was actually on page 8.

The people on the balcony on page 8 and the masked woman on the other side of Elan on page 9 appear to be new characters with only one appearance.

Also, some of the masquerade costumes should probably be listed (e.g. "Nale as Bizarro"), but I can't recognize most of them myself.

EDIT: I was counting the title page as page 1 for these numbers.

It's not Sangwaan; it's just someone with their eyes covered. Lots of masked characters in that scene have white eyes like that, and besides, Sangwaan's eyes were only ever visible when she had True Seeing activated.

Gift Jeraff

My first thought for Skeletor was the Death Knight, but the eyes are closer to Death's from the Spring Break gag panel, and fits with how most of the characters in the story are from Book 5 or plots related to Haley/Elan/the Western Continent.

But I think it should just be listed as Skeletor.

NOTES
1) In this post, Wrecan noted that we weren't counting cover's and thus the title page of Uncivil Servant wasn't counted.

2) Roy's horse has appeared in multiple comics, starting here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0142.html). Is it in the index anywhere? Corrected.

3) This collared slave appears a couple of times. I didn't have him in my inital list, but it was in Gift Jeraff's version so I'm including it as well to see what people think.

The guards are all faceless background characters in my opinon though, and I'm not including them. They're in Gift Jeraff's list if we think they should be included.

4) I'm pretty sure this is a new character. Has anyone seen him? If not, he has two appearances here.

5) This Robot Applicant's second appearance. He first appeared in the interview scene in On the Origin of PCs Corrected.

6) I believe this is his second actual appearance. He was first seen here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0755.html).

7) I don't recognize this character either. I am very certain it is not Sangwann as the hair style does not match up at all. If she is new, she has two apperances here.

8) Put me in the pro-Skeletor camp. Body structure doesn't fit. Nor do the eyes, as mentioned in the thread. Plus he's enjoying a drink. :smallwink:

9) This is the woman with the fake devil horns. Don't recognize her either. She also has two appearances here.

10) On the balcony along with Aumn-Zora and Gourntonk are two character I do not recognize. Masqurade Guest With A Circlet and Halfing With a Flattop. These are their only appearance in this story. Thus if they are new, they aren't included.

ETA: The 'Halfling With a Flattop' is Stanley the Tool, making him a named character.

ETA x 2: And, yes, the Masqurade Guest With A Circle is Wanda Firebaugh.

Mentioning this for future reference if they turn up in the main comic or other bonus material.

11) There was a lot of debate back in the day whether or not the Grand Larcenist (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html) was the same character as Therkla's father (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0555.html). Was that ever settled one way or the other?

12) There is a character to the right of Elan (call her, Masquerade With Stick Mask Attendee) who appears only here. I do not beleive she has ever appeared before. If not, she doesn't get included in the list.

Mentioning this for future reference material in the even she turns up in the main comic or other bonus material.

13) I know that we've never seen this character before. But in case we see him again, marking him for future reference.

....

Yeah. I think that's enough out of me for now. :smalltongue:

Commenting about the Ice King.

He's not anyone else, he's just there as himself as part of the "other two parties" Tarquin says he conquered. Same with a few other not-masqueraded villain characters hidden around the scene.

That sounds like it is Skeletor and not a dressed up Xykon by implication to me.

Well, it's not like Rich ever said anything... but I'm pretty sure they're just two different characters with similar hair and clothing. As has been noted on multiple occasions in the past, a stick figure comic only has so many designs to go around.

This thread hasn't treated them as the same, at least.

I was thinking about mentioning in my last post that the couple on the balcony (though probably not the masked woman, who has a pretty generic design) might be other villains making a cameo appearance. But I couldn't identify them at all and figured it might be reading too much into it anyway.

Now that I look at "Stanley" closely, though, he's obviously not a halfling at all - no hairy feet. Is the woman next to him another Erfworld character?

Just made an edit to my post, but, yes it is Wanda Firebaugh (http://www.erfworld.com/wiki/index.php/Wanda_Firebaugh). Just can't make out that it's a skull there not a circle on the headband. :smallwink:

ETA:::

So IMO, that leaves....

Three potential cameos.

Phil Rodriguez's Date. (the guy with a goatee)
Tarquin's Shoulder Pad Ally's Date (the one with the devil horns (possibly fake) and mini-wings). She's got a bellybutton piercing and some bracelets around her arms if that helps.
And maybe the Shadowdancer's date. She's awfully generic though.

Anyone want to try to crowdsource these three?

I doubt they're cameos. The "feel" isn't really right.

I'll try to add these, when the list is fulled.

Shadowdancer's date in the masquerade scene might be Samantha. At least that's the way I interpreted her.

I see what you're saying, but the hair doesn't match up (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0164.html).

Shadowdancer's Date's hair has her cuts at the front, while Samantha's has her cuts in the back. So while the part is similar, the style of hair is different enough to make it non-conclusive to me.

Ah yes, I just noticed the hairstyle similarity and thought it would match, but now I see it doesn't. And there I thought one time I was the first onto something... :smallsigh:

From the Kickstarter Thread:

Also, is the tapestry that Haleo was hiding behind supposed to be a reference to something? It looks like it should be? Maybe one of the various movie versions of R&J or something?

It's the Romeo and Juliet from Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film version:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9DdTMtFFYYA/Tt6MTiN8vZI/AAAAAAAAA-g/VKePG728ej4/s320/romeo_juliet.jpg

My comment:
I'd wondered about that painting.

Per the rules of the thread, that makes them named characters, does it not? If so then Romeo and Juliet get one each.

Thoughts?

Yeah, if we've counted the Rent cast and the Final Fantasy characters then that's got to count as an appearance for Romeo and Juliet.

Haleo and Julelan stuff:

Romeo and Juliet added to Haleo and Juliet list.

Changed Ioun Stone Caster to Laurin Shattersmith

Okay, while we're in the process of updating the list, here's my very nitpicky comment of the day:

The Genderbent Ogress that we see in Comic #9 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0009.html) has at least another appearance, in Comic #5 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0005.html) since she was among the three ogres.

I don't think she's the same as the Stupid Ogre (since the latter seems to have bonus appearances too).

That would put her at two, with one alternate form (as Male) to boot.

Thank you.

Do we want to assume that the soldier carrying away Tarquin's helmet is the same as the Plot-Critical Revealing Soldier from last strip?

Only if we assume he's had a spray-tan between panels, because the skin colour isn't even close.

Is that white blob next to Belkar's left shoulder Mr. Scruffy, or is it too indistinct to tell?

There does seem to be something there, though.

About the masquerade scene:
So did we decide, then, about including the guests costumes (where recognizable) as cameos? Like, Nale as Bizarro? I know that we don't list interesting alterations from bonus material, but that would be like crediting "Nale (as Bizarro)". I mean, giving Bizarro a listing. By comparison, we count a corpse as an appearance of a character, but don't call "(as corpse)" an alteration.

If we do, then we have at least three for Bizarro, and one for Guy Fawkes. Anyone recognize any other costumes?

IMO, we shouldn't because it's not actually Bizarro or Tony Manero (Tarquin's costume) showing up anymore than than The Joker (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0562.html) showing up when an Hinjo apperaed as him in the Island scenes.

To put it another way, Batman the character has shown up in the strip. But if Elan were to dress up as Batman, it wouldn't count as an apperance for Batman since he didn't actually appear.

I know we've stretched the rules for when dolls action figures of them appear. And I'm cool with that. Pics of them on paintings, magazines, and book covers certainly count.

But a person in costume of that character? No, I don't think it should count in that case.

But, don't characters appearing as each other count? From the FAQ:
"Also, when someone appears as someone else (for instance when Nale impersonates Elan), that counts as an appearance for both the character in disguise and the character being impersonated."

If impersonations count, it seems to me constumes should count...

Back when Wrecan was running this, I remember there was a discussion about whether or not Thog should get appearances when Tarquin was impersonating him. If I recall correctly, he did end up getting the appearances despite there being some disagreement within the thread. I was one of those who thought he shouldn't have gotten them, but hey.

We didn't count Hinjoker or Bard Boy in the list except in the Interesting Alterations section, and they would absolutely count if we do this.

I presume there must have been some sort of debate over this when things like that happened.

Also, technically, Nale is Nyblat here, so 'Nyblat' would also get all of his appearances. And we'd have to go through all of SS&DT to redo all of that.

To me, a costume ball is separate from knowingly impersonating someone else and expecting people to buy the impersonation (which might be a rule that needs to be revisited as I think about it).

If we must split hairs, then this is the hair to split:

Appearing in a costume at a ball is NOT trying to deceive people into thinking you are that person, which is the very definition of 'impersonation'.

Tarquin was trying to get people to think he actually was Thog. What is being discussed in Spoiler Bars isn't remotely the same thing, IMO.

So, the intent is the thing? I assume Elan unwillingly disguised as Nale counted as a Nale appearance? But then, that was the costumer's (Nale's) intent.

Really, I can see the argument either way here. Costumes do constitute a character appearing on the page in some sense, but what counts as a meaningful appearance is really a matter of preference.
