View Full Version : Random Mutation Tables

Among the locations that my players may be visiting in the near future is a cavern filled with solid fog and inhabited by fleshwarped monstrosities. On the off chance that the players decide to spend a prolonged period there, I'd like to have some sort of results- specifically, I'm looking for a way to randomly generate mutations that might be A) entirely cosmetic, B) a minor advantage, or C) a minor disadvantage.
The game's Pathfinder if it matters, but I'm willing to try and convert stats from another system if it fits this idea fairly well.

Weirdlands of Xhuul (http://xhuul.blogspot.fi/2011/07/xhuul-mutation-tables-powers-and.html) (blog) has some mutation tables (https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B_fdDsNnLe_LZjhiY2MyNzQtZGQyNy00NDUyLTljZTM tZjE0OTQxMzBmMjZm&hl=en_US) (Google Docs) you might be able to adapt.

Savage Swords of Athanor (http://swordsofathanor.blogspot.fi/) has some, too (https://www.box.com/shared/ifyu9tnm8q) (PDF on Box.com).

And Mutant Future (http://goblinoidgames.com/mutantfuture.html), of course.

If you want random (and I do mean RANDOM) mutations, accept no substitutes:

:smalleek: Isn't that the one where many, many of the mutations are immediately lethal (possibly in a radius) ?

Yep. The blogger tells of his hilarious efforts to roll up a playable character. 1 useless on arrival, two DOAs, one gamebreaker, and one I don't know what.

REALISM!

Well ... there's a mutation table for Warp Touch from D&D's Book of Vile Darkness. I don't know if it was retained in the 4th edition though, so you might need to track down the 3rd/3.5 edition for that.

Based on a d%, you've got a 1 in 10 chance of dying, 3 in 10 chance of moderate to major negative mutations (stat drains, speed reduction, blindness, deafness, etc.), 1 in 4 chance of any number of minor mutations (purely cosmetic - no in-game effect), 3 in 10 chance of mutations with minor to moderate benefits (though some are uncontrollable/come paired with a simultaeous disadvantage*), and finally 1 in 20 chance of two mutations.

*Example: one of the mutations is "Arms Become Tentacles" which grants Improved Grab, but prevents the charater from holding/manipulating objects. Most of the mutations here, though, just offer benefits.

First, this looks really awesome, thank you for posting it.

Second- I know, I know, there are ways to do it (roll a d10 for each digit place, use a computerized die roller) but...

Simply roll 1d1000.

What, you don't have d1000's lying around your house?

Of course not!

It requires its own garage.

... you have d100s?

I don't really get why rolling d1000 is so different from d100.

It really isn't. Just need 3 dice instead of 2. Even a dmillion requires only 6 dice which is still fairly easy to roll.

Nonononono... rolling 3d10 and playing the places game simply will not do. Why throw tens and ones when they make perfectly serviceable d100s? It's just another order of magnitude.

Crank up the turbine, check the ballast level, and spin that thousand-sider.

...

Let me know when it stops....

... any day now...

Behold the Metamorphica! (http://redboxvancouver.wordpress.com/2012/05/21/the-metamorphica-a-book-of-random-mutation-tables/) If you actually need anything beyond this... read the bibliography. Seriously. Metamorphosis Alpha? That's old school.

Of course, for something a bit sillier, there's always The Grog of Substantial Whimsy (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Grog_of_Susbtantial_Whimsy_%283.5e_Equipment%29The Grog of Substantial Whimsy)

Well, Bogleech has an excellent mutant generation chart (http://www.bogleech.com/mutants.html) for his game Mortasheen (Where mutants are one of the playable races), and I'm sure it'd be perfect for your needs!

I had an idea where the god of magic 'blessed' arcane magic users with 'signs of his blessing', i.e. mutations. Besides adding a certain eldritch flavour, it was meant to explain why magic users are somewhat shunned, especially by noble houses, so, thanks, this is useful to me as well.

Warhammer FRP and, I think, Dungeon Crawl Classics do this.

Yeah, I like a lot of the Warhammer fantasy magic flavour. The Winds of Magic are also a clever bit of fluff. Magic is dangerous, alien, something that can be used, even studied, but not truly controlled.
