Welcome to...
Iron Avatarist

This Iron Avatarist contest will be judged by - get this - an All-Mod Panel. That's right..

Alarra, Gorbash Kadzar, Lilly, Rawhide, Roland St. Jude

(The final lineup subject to change.)

This week's theme is...
Ancient Mythologies of Western Civilization

Wha...? Okay, let me explain. You will be drawing avatars (in the OotS style) of deities, historical figures, or creatures from the mythologies of Europe and Northern Africa. Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, Germanic and so forth. Nothing Asiatic or New World (Americas) (as we may do those as seperate contests later). *And don't forget to dress up the OotS characters!

And, of course, there is going to be a First through Third place of the following:

Best Mythological Figure
Best Historical Figure
Best Group (>1 Being = Group)
Best OotS Character as a mythological or historical figure
Best OotS Group as mythological or historical figures.

There can be only one…Best Overall award.

And, of course, the Roland’s Choice Award will go to the avatarist's creation that most appeals to my, admittedly whimsical, sensibilities.

Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in. (If there seems to be some question about whether a given figure is historical or mythical, you pick where you'd like to enter it.)

Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what your entry is.

For example:
Best Mythological Figure
Centaur

Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.
However, you may submit old creations as long as they have never been entered into an Iron Avatar Thread before. *It does not have to be something made specifically for this thread.

All entries must be completed by Friday, December 1st, at 12 am EST. *That is Thursday evening, Friday morning at midnight U.S. Eastern Standard Time.

Sorry for the show-off, I am preparing a Greek themed webcomic for a bit more than a month, and I've done quite a lot of drawing. I guess I've already posted too much, if you want to see more you can go to my blog (http://www.lostinbrittany.org/dotclear/)

I guess that I should place my avatars "out of contest", to not let the number of contributions scare anyone wanting to participate.

What do you think?

Lykan

How much Hunnic mythology is there?
No no... Actually, The thing I was thinking of is the Greek's view of the Huns...

Which I guess qualifies for this competition.

I'm going to try re-installing Inkscape so I can compete here.

Also, the irony of dressing up the OoTS as the "Gods of the East" that they never heard of just struck me.

"Who am I supposed to be again?" Hehe.

Sneak, I like that Belkar/Aten. Just thinking, each of the rays were hands reaching down to earth, so why not put a dagger in each hand rather than have them pointing at him? Just a thought, it's still an interesting (and kinda worrying) idea.

I got one question:
I noticed that there is a category for 'Best Historical Figure'. What does this mean exactly? As far as I know, historical figures are not mythological.
Does this mean that we can, for example, draw Alexander the Great, or Hannibal of Carthago? It is quite sure that they did exist, so strictly speaking they're no myths. So does this fit into the 'historical' group?

Yes. Those figures that actually existed are "Historical Figures." If there is some ambiguity, you can select the category you want to enter. (I'm struggling to come up with such an ambiguous figure right now...maybe Helen of Troy? Anyway, if in doubt you can choose.)

I believe that's what's intended. I was actually working on Hannibal myself. So far I have the only historical post, although it's the OotS catergory (with belkar as brutus)

Correct. Don't forget the "Ancient" part! *looks to see that he included that* Yep. Ancient. While we could argue about what that means, let's say (and I think this is very liberal) pre-Norman Conquest (1066 AD).

Uh, I think "ancient" ends with the fall of the Roman Empire. Which I think was just before Constantine the Great? Anyway, around about sort of 3-500AD, or thereabouts, sort of. But, you are the mod, and this is your world, so Ancient can be wherever you like.
There's some fantastic stuff! Can't wait till I have time to join in.

Agreed. If you had asked me as a historian, I would have said 476 AD, with the fall of the Roman Empire. (In fact, I did say such a thing to Gorby when he poked me with his pokey-stick.) But for these purposes a more liberal definition seemed helpful.

Comrade Gorby: Please do not post avatars of real-world religious figures of extant religions. While he does fall in the correct dates, in addition to being an issue with the rules, we're working with the more classical definition of mythology.

Hardly true, the Romans and Greeks had much earlier stories. Beowulf is a story from the middle of the first millenium. Its a good story that sets the mold for its type, but hardly the first. I think Herakles killing I don't know how many monsters counts as the "first" monster hunt in that context.

Vespasian was helping suppress Jewish rebellions but I believe the person you are looking for is Lucius Flavius Silva. He was the commander of the tenth legion and the guy who captured Masada (and then there was the mass suicide), which is comparable to the orcs conquering helms deep (if it weren't for gandolf's timely arrival) They built a really long ramp up to the top of the platau, and all the Jews killed their families and cast lots to see who would have to kill the last person.

Phoenix

Text from: http://www.deathreference.com/Nu-Pu/Phoenix-the.html

In ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology, the Phoenix is a mythical bird associated with the Egyptian sun god Ra and the Greek god Phoibos Apollo. The bird symbolizes resurrection and immortality and has retained its symbolic connotation of LIFE arising anew from THE ASHES OF DEATH. The Romans compared the phoenix with the Eternal City, and even put it on a coin as a symbol of the undying Roman empire. The Phoenix as a symbol of RESURRECTION might have appealed to early Christians as well.

According to the Egyptians, the Phoenix was as LARGE AS AN EAGLE OR AS A PEACOCK, with BRILLIAN PLUMAGE and a MELODIOUS CRY. According to the Greeks, the bird lived in Arabia. Each morning at dawn the Phoenix would bathe in the water and sing so beautifully that the SUN GOD would stop to listen. Both the Egyptian and the Greek traditions mention that only ONE PHOENIX COULD EXIST AT ANY TIME and that it had a long life (from 500 to 1,461 years). Upon sensing its approaching death, the phoenix would build a nest of aromatic wood, set it on fire, and allow itself to be consumed by the flames. From the ashes in the pyre a NEW Phoenix would spring to LIFE that would then embalm the ashes of its father in an egg of myrrh and fly with them to Heliopolis ("the city of the Sun") in Egypt. There it would deposit the egg on the altar of the sun god.

Yay! Brownie points for me! Cause we ALL know Mother Teresa was a greek deity.

Curse you, danielf, and your speedier button pressing mixed with typing skills! Curse you!

Hmm...I hadn't noticed the Brazilian motif...I think it was due to the whole Celtic/Irish theme...that, and yellow seemed like the proper glowy color...

Amen, Pluto wasn't written by him and now the entire suite is completely by him.

Exactly. Pluto wasn't considered a planet when he composed the suite!

But!...Poopr pluto, he's not a real planet now, but a "dwarf" planet...aww...

Uh, since it's still today, any chance I can get a small pardon from the closing?

Seriously, my harddrive crashed, this is my latest copy of my entry that I can find, and I'm not even an hour late..

If it's acceptable, my entry is:

(I actually have no pithy reason for this. I just liked it.)

Congratulations, as always, to our winners!

Really incredible job everyone! This was a very difficult one to judge with so many amazing entries. Thanks to our judges for taking the time to sort through them all and make the tough choice.

Finally, thanks to LostInBrittany for another set of fine trophies (so fine in fact that he's still working on them. Frankly, I don't know how he does it.)

Also: For those of you who entered things that didn't qualify at all (Robin Hood, Jack the Ripper, etc., feel free to enter them in other contests should the opportunity arise.)

And for those of you interested, the next Iron Avatar Contest is HERE! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1696805#post1696805)

I won something! Yay! and I won with an entry that I thought to be the worst of all my entries! I'm not sure if I should be happy about that though.
Anyway, thanks to the judges. I'm sure they had a hard time with all these great entries.
And congratulations to the other winners.
