I've seen several other threads around here and other forums talking about Magical Traps, locating and disabling them, using Detect Magic and Dispel Magic.

I get all that, but I've come up blank trying to find info on this. I have a PC Wizard in my group with a Ring of Spell Battle. It lets him detect that a spell is being cast anywhere within 60 feet of him. If someone nearby sets off a magical spell trap (the lock was trapped with Chain Lightning), would that register as a cast spell, or is it just a 'released' spell since it was already 'cast' during the creation of the trap?

Second, I know that Dispel Magic will suppress a magical trap for 1d4 rounds. If that same Wizard knew there was a magical trap on the chest and readied an action while the rogue opened it, if the trap was tripped would the Wizard be able to get a Spellcraft check to determine what spell was being set off and counter it with a Dispel Magic, or would the spell just be suppressed? Since the target of the dispel would then be the spell and not the trap, I would argue that it would not be suppressed. Also, would he even need to know (via Spellcraft) what the spell is, since he's using Dispel Magic to counter it and not a counter-spell?

When creating magical traps, the spell is cast during construction of the trap. The magical traps in this section (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/traps.htm#magicTraps) would be treated the same as magic items. So you can suppress their effects, but you can't counter them. Nor can you target the spell itself with your dispel, any more than you could target the spells used to create a magic wand.
On the other hand, there are some spells like Symbol (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/symbolOfDeath.htm) spells that act like traps, but are actually still just spells that remain in place until their duration expires, they are triggered, or they are removed. These can actually be targeted with a dispel just like any other spell, although they still cannot be countered once in place.

That is the explanation I needed.

Thanks!
