[3.5] Fly/glide and Jump bonus?

Is there a standard bonus to Jump if a creature has a fly or glide speed? I seem to remember reading something once, but my brain is full of spiders at the moment.

Kinda relevant; Raptorants get a +10 to jump because of their wings off the bat, before their wings are completely developed and such.

I know of the Dragon wings feat that gives you wings ifyou have the dragonblood subtype that gives you a glide speed and a +10 to jump, if you take a 2nd feat it alows you to fly using those wings.

But why jump when you can fly? is the real question :smallsmile:

I'm aware of no such general rule, but a lot of specific wings do grant Jump bonuses.

Depending on your maneuverability quality some movements may not work as a fly, that could be done with a jump. Like Straight up and down.

Also in TOB you can take a jump as a swift action, allowing swift action movement.

I don't remember reading of one, and it's understandable why. Winged creatures rarely use their wings to jump. Dragonborn and Raptorans get some benefit from it, but aside from "It's magic, baby!", I cannot think of a reason why, outside of "here's some benefit until you qualify for 5th/6th level Glide.

A +8 racial bonus would be in line with the bonus to swim given to characters with a natural swim speed.

Hmm, yeah, +8 sounds like a good ballpark figure, though I am tempted to nab the +10 bonus.

Any thoughts on if this bonus to Jump should have a type attached to it?

EDIT: Upon re-reading, it seems racial has been mentioned a couple of times.

A +8 racial bonus would be in line with the bonus to swim given to characters with a natural swim speed.

however, that +8 is only to avoid hazards, it isnt just for any swim check.

They auto pass swim checks to just move. I would guess that characters with a fly peed auto pass the jump check to cover a distance up to their fly speed as well.

While not standard groups I've been in always ruled wings to give +10 racial to jump. As for the explanation... "its magic baby" isnt a good one but the concept that wings produce lift is a good explanation for why they help you jump longer or higher.

Yeah, +8 is pretty standard for any Climb, Swim, Jump, or even Hide and Move Silently bonuses for a race/animal/etc that can "naturally" do that thing.

It's not standard, no.
That said, our DM ruled that any "natural" wings (which a couple of our characters have) would follow the Raptoran racial progression, replacing the Raptorans numbers for whatever is appropriate (I.E. one character has a glide/flight speed of 80, so that replaces the R's speed of 40)
This includes the bonus to jump checks.
