Dark*Matter was a setting created for the Alternity roleplaying game by Wizards of the Coast. When WotC later created the d20 Modern system, they managed to collect a fair amount of creatures from Dark*Matter and add them into the new system. "Some" is not "all", however, and a fair amount of fascinating monsters were left behind. Even the d20 Modern version of Dark*Matter (cleverly entitled d20 Dark*Matter) only converted two of these creatures. And that? That is a shame. Thankfully, there was an Alternity-to-d20 Modern conversion kit given out by Wizards of the Coast, allowing those who wished to do some math and guess work to convert them. That's what this thread is for. Note that these are specifically Dark*Matter creatures, whose mythology may not perfectly align with that of real life mythology, but I have kept intact as they were in the classic Dark*Matter.

As a special bonus, there will also be minor notes for Dungeons and Dragons versions of the monsters as well, for those who do not utilize d20 Modern.

Dark*Matter Grand Monster List
The following is a list of all of the monsters from the four Dark*Matter books that came out during Alternity's run. Creatures in bold have official d20 Modern stats or close equivalents - the books which they are in being listed in brackets afterwards, as well as alternate names they may be under. Creatures that will gain new conversions are not in bold, instead having links to them inserted as they are converted.

The powerful and imposing Isci ba Fan is a mighty fiend that has existed for millenia, now confined to an intangible form. His every waking moment is consumed by a desire to feel the touch of flesh once more and his tremendous mental powers make him more than capable of commandeering humanoid vessels to seek out this goal. Such victims, referred to as "Silent Minds", are treated as little more than dirty clothing for the great demon and are often left with permanent mental scars, leading some to speculate that Isci ba Fan has helped further (or is possibly even the origin of) the spread of the bodak plagues upon the Gray worldships.

Species Traits
Psychic Crush (Su): Three times per day, as an attack action, Isci ba Fan can release a bolt of mental energy that can abruptly and brutally crush the mental essence of a target, debilitating its acumen. A target struck by the attack must make a DC 34 Will save with a +4 bonus or collapse unconscious and dying at –1 hit points. If the target succeeds on the save, it takes 8d6 points of damage. This blast is considered a ranged touch attack with a range of 30 feet.

Psi-Like Abilities (Psi): At will—clairvoyant sense, false sensory input (8 targets), mindlink (unwilling DC 18, 16 targets), psionic blast (stunned 8 rounds, DC 20), psionic suggestion (nine targets, DC 19), read thoughts (DC 19), thought shield (power resistance 30, 18 rounds); 3/day—mind thrust (20d10, DC 27). Manifester level 20th. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Psionics (Psi): In addition to his powerful psi-like abilities, Isci ba Fan can manifest powers as a 20th-level Telepath.

Possession (Su): Once per day, Isci ba Fan can possess any humanoid size Small or larger as a full-round action. This ability works as per the possession incantation.

Aura of Shadow (Su): A near-impenetrable aura of shadows permeates around Isci ba Fan or any creature it possesses for a 10-foot radius. This functions as a short-range deeper darkness spell.

Isci ba Fan In Dungeons and Dragons
Environment: Any lower plane
Treasure: None
Alignment: Neutral Evil

Isci ba Fan could be refluffed as any one of the Small races, though he is most likely to fit with psionic one such as the blue goblins. He acts as a silent corrupter instead of an actively forceful or violent entity like many demons. The Improved Damage Threshold feat can be swapped out for Diehard, and the Knowledge skills can be replaced by Knowledge (Arcana, Nature, Dungeoneering, Psionics, and the Planes). His psionics are classed as being that of a 20th-level Psion.

Resembling a bloated monstrous spider with a chitinous black hide, this demon lord is truly a frightening sight to behold. Baal-phegor was once a god amongst the Moabite peoples and freely accepted numerous forms of tribute. Time and the workings of the secret society of the Rosicrucians have all but deposed this monster's rule, however, save for the few select cults that willingly worship him and the many fools unwillingly aiding his grand plans (whatever these plans are, however, are unknown to all but the highest cultists).

Baal-phegor works through humanity's inherent greed, promoting slavery, black market trade of organic and non-organic goods alike, technological improvements, and feeding the pockets of the rich in order to seduce those to his thrall. He once also walked the earth to seduce through the pleasures of the flesh in the guise of an alluring woman, but rage and fear aimed toward the Rosicrucians has all but snuffed out any attempts of the spider-lord to return to such activities.

Species Traits
Summon Demons (Sp): Once per day, Baal-phegor can automatically summon 1d3 bebiliths or 1d6 kwevenchas.

Subjugate Outsider (Su): Once a month, Baal-phegor can enslave an unwilling outsider as a full-round action. This works as per the subjugate outsider incantation.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will-displacement, tongues; 3/day-dimension door.
Caster level 20th. Saves are Charisma-based.

Alternate Form (Su): Baal-phegor can assume the form of any female humanoid size Medium or smaller as a standard action. He can remain in this alternate form until he chooses to assume a new one or return to its natural form.

Poison (Ex): Anyone bitten by Baal-phegor must make a Fortitude save (DC 32) or contract a horrid poison (initial damage 1d4 Wisdom, secondary 1d6 Wisdom).

Hellfire (Su): Three times per day, Baal-phegor may unleash a blaze of hellfire from his vicious maw. This is a 50-foot cone that deals 5d6 points of fire damage, as well as an additional 5d6 points of unholy damage to a creature with an allegiance to good. A successful Reflex save (DC 28) halves damage.

Baal-Phegor In Dungeons and Dragons
Environment: The Nine Hells
Treasure: Double standard
Alignment: Neutral Evil

In a fantasy setting, Baal-phegor is likely to be vying for attention from the dark gods that haven't fallen from their post, weaving subterfuge in the underbelly of the aristocracy to keep the richer richer (to feed his coffers) and the poor poorer (to feed his stomach). For this version, replace Knowledge (Technology) with Appraise, Knowledge (Arcane Lore, Civics, and Streetwise) for Knowledge (Arcana, Nobility and Royalty, and either Dungeoneering or Local) respectively, and Computer Use for Disable Device. Similarly, Improved Damage Threshold may be replaced with Diehard in settings that do not use the Massive Damage Threshold rules.
