You have waited in a dark, dank cell for your sentences to run out. Some of you are incarcerated for a long period extending well beyond your natural lifespan. The boredom of solitary confinement is torture far worse than anything that could be dreamed up by a dwarven investigator. The time has allowed you to dream up escaping more times than you could count. Tonight, however, your chance has come. The entire prison shook with a large explosion, and what little light there was winked out. The guards that usually patrol every few minutes do not appear for nearly an hour. Silence falls on the complex. After a few additional minutes, the lock on your cell lights up, illuminated by some inner magic. Eight symbols appear at random on the lock, sometimes all eight, other times as few as five. You get the feeling that these symbols have something to do with unlocking the door, but why they would be on the inside of the cell is a mystery.

The symbols are:
A red swirl
A blue circle
A green star
A white square
A purple horse
A yellow diamond
An orange triangle
A silver blade

For too long the Unquenchable Conflagration had been contained in this tiny cell. Now it was time for everything to... burn.

He studied the lock. It appeared to be obviously magical, but it might take some time to understand how.

Stifling back a yawn, Amber saunters over to the cell door and takes a casual glance at the shifting patterns.

Requires Arcana 25 to open
The lock is a combination of magical power and other things. The glowing lights are a magical effect, and you believe there is a magical trap inlaid within it. You sense some sort of link between your lock and the others in the cell block. It is possible the lock can be opened by entering the correct combination, but it may require all the prisoners trying to unlock the cells at the same time to open the lock.

Amber
You can only guess that the patterns are a magical failsafe in case the door needed to be opened after some accident. You aren't sure what to do, except that each of the symbols seems to be a button of some sort.

Well, that's as good a sign as any, and certainly an obvious one, Trox muttered to himself. He could tell this enchantment would require some knowledge of magic to unlock. Not being the most learned of magicians, he elected to study the pattern of blinking symbols for a time, to see if he could notice anything to help him on his way.

Magic begins to play along Kharath-zuul's fingers. A blue flame licks the lock and dances along the surface and if trying to pick it open.

Arcana - [roll0]

He nearly has but then a sound from outside, perhaps a guard he thinks, distracts Kharath-Zuul at a crucial moment.

Trox
The pattern seems completely random, or at least a complex enough pattern that you cannot track it. As you mutter to yourself, you realize that the magical dampening that cut short any sounds made is gone...your mutterings echo along the magically-reinforced stone walls.

All
You hear a snarling voice say "Magic? I hate magic." This is strange, as usually it is completely silent in the prison. Some bit of magic must have stopped working that made the cell block silent.[/b]

Nevtelen
Your voice echoes down the hall, which is strange, as usually it would be silenced before it was out of your mouth.

The lock is a complex combination of magic, divine power, mechanics and clockwork. You can puzzle out the mechanical portion of it, but its protected by the others. You would need an entire team of experts on each of the fields in the cell with you to simply disable it, and it looks like the only way out would be to figure out the combination. You find a nasty electrode that would send out a shock if you hit the wrong combination. You could easily disable this, but who knows what might happen.

Karath-zuul
As you probe the lock, a small amount of electricity shocks you. It is not enough to harm you, but seems to be a warning against meddling with the lock.

Son_of_Meepo
2013-03-22, 05:26 PM
A voice booms down the block.

"It appears these locks are linked together. Attacking them from one point my be insufficient. I can work against the magic in here, but if anyone else is for getting out... you'll need to work on your own at the same time."

Angel Bob

"Well, thanks for the advice," Trox says to the second voice.

He sighs and condemns himself to the fact that his limited knowledge of magic is all that will aid him in this predicament. Not exactly the most grand escape plan he'd had in mind, but it will have to do.

Arcana - [roll0]

Of course, though Trox can bend mind and matter with his own force of will, he is somewhat lacking in the ability to dispel enchantments. The lock stays put, the symbols seeming to taunt him with their desultory dance.

"So, it is finally happening." Gach muttered as he got up and went over to his lock. "Magic? I hate magic." A voice echoed.
What is causing all this? Gach wondered as he got to the lock.

"I've never noticed that before." He growled, inspecting the lock and symbols.

Soishnak has grown bored of being in this cell. Not being too keen on the workings of magick, Soishnak thinks about using his thieving skills to get out. Well until he hears others speaking.

"Disabling the lock isn't possible," Telen said to nobody in particular, "The combination is needed... What connection do the symbols have...? There's a circle, a triangle, a square, a star, a diamond... The horse and sword don't fit with the others and the swirl stands out as well."

After a moment of two of disappointment, something occurs to Trox. "Hmm, wait a minute. The swirl, circle, and diamond are primary colours... horse, star, and triangle are secondary... blade and square don't fit in. Anyone smarter than me want to figure that out?"

Angel Bob

After a prolonged silence, Trox speaks again. "Say, how many voices was that? Snarling guy... booming magician... growling voice... confused guy... and myself. Five of us, eight symbols. Hmm. Could it -- nah. Well, I suppose there's no harm in suggesting it:

"Suppose each of the basic shapes corresponds to one of our cells? That'd discount the swirl, horse, and sword. Simple, I know, but perhaps it's trying to outsmart us. No one would try a combination as dumb as that, so naturally that's the one that works. Worth a shot?"

There is no telling how many buttons we'd each have to press and each door could have a different code."

As you try to figure out the patterns of the magical runes, a second explosion shakes the entire complex. You are bodily thrown to the ground, and any wards and protections around your cell doors are destroyed. The magical energy around the runes explodes into the cells, destroying the mechanical and magical door locks. The cell doors open at the slightest touch now, but you are all singed by the magical backlash (everyone takes 20 electricity damage before any damage reduction).

The six cells are arrayed along a short hallway 10ft across. One way ends in a steel wall, the other leads to a large steel doorway. The hallway continues into the complex, extending as far as you can see.

The door slides open quite easily now that the obstruction is removed (2000 xp awarded for the skill challenge). You are quite surprised that there are no guards in the area, they usually patrol quite regularly. If the dwarf and elf guards aren't present, then usually at least one of their magi-mechanical constructs is roaming around. The latest model of those monstrosities you have seen rolls around in a big ball, before deploying like a plant growing from a seed, swinging blades or firing bolts (sometimes both).

The corridor continues for sixty feet, and is fairly well lit. You have trouble sneaking along it, and if there was anything in the corridor, you think it would have to be blind not to spot you. About eighty feet from the door, the corridor comes to a T intersection. Peeking around the corner to the left is an area where the magical lighting seems to be malfunctioning. It flickers constantly, and there are several completely dark spots. On the right, the lights are working perfectly, but one of the sphere-robot guards stands at attention about 20ft down. You are sure he hasn't spotted you, because he hasn't reacted at all. The entire part should be able to get down the dark corridor without it spotting them.

Everyone manages to sneak into the shadowy areas of the hallway, not apparently being noticed by the sentinel. The magical lights flicker in this hallway, meaning a spot that was dark and safe one moment, becomes brightly lit the next. Thankfully, the one sentinel is the only guard you have noticed, and he has not reacted to you at all. The hall extends for 60ft before it reaches a corner, heading to the left. About 30ft from the corner (and 30ft from you) is a steel door. It has a keypad on it, similar to those on your cells, but the symbols are not flashing randomly. There are nine symbols here.

Anyone with language (dwarven) or language (elven) or who can pass a insight (30) check.
The symbols are the imperial numeric runes, numbering one through nine. This means this keypad requires a numeric code to enter the door the traditional way.

The door has one of the familiar shock probes, similar to the one in your cell. This one is very well designed, but is completely mechanical in nature. You do not think entering a code will trigger it, merely trying to force the door or messing with the locking mechanism. There is also a magical trap laid into the panel. You hazard a guess that if you enter the wrong code too many times, and alarm will sound, alerting the guards.

Kharath-zuul ponders the discovery for a while.

"Well if we trace the resonance all the way around each path we could have...

1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 4 - 9... back to 1 - 4 - 5 - 9 - 3 - 7... and end at 1.

But then I could also follow 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 4 - 9... with 3 - 7 - 1 - 4 - 5 - 9 and end up back at 1.

I think you can start at any number and make a similar circuit though, so circuit would require more information...

Perfect squares. 1, 4, 9, 49... nope, not seeing anything beyond that.

I think we'll need more clues to solve it."

"Hmph," Trox grunts. "Numbers." Although he leaves the brunt of the reasoning to the half-orc and wizard, it would be pertinent to try and offer some aid. "Well... I can see there are some odd numbers, but then 4 throws the pattern off. What else?"

1 has resonance with 3 and 4
3 has resonance with 5 and 7
4 has resonance with 9 and 5
5 has resonance with 7 and 9
7 has resonance with 1 and 4
9 has resonance with 3 and 1

If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Trox sighs and applies what little mathematical knowledge he has.

"Let's see if simple arithmetic can't give us any answers.

"3, 5, and 7 are connected. The difference between 3 and 5 is 2; 3 and 7, 4.

"The difference between 4 and 9 is 5; 4 and 5 is 1.

"Between 5 and 7, 2; 5 and 9, 4. Hey... that sounds familiar.

"Between 7 and 1, 6; 7 and 4, 3.

3 leads to 5 and 7, 5 and 7 is 12 and 1 and 2 is 3.
4 is 9 and 5 which is 14. 1 and 4 is 5.
5 is 7 an 9 which is 16 or 1 and 6 is 7
7 is 1 and 4 which is 5.
9 is 1 and 3 which is 4.

So.

1 -> 7
3 -> 3
4 -> 5
5 -> 7
7 -> 5
9 -> 4.

Starting the pattern at each number...

1 7 5 7
3 3 3 3
4 5 7 5
5 7 5 7
7 5 7 5
9 4 5 7
