It seems kind of wack that in addition to all the things that spell casters can do that melee can't, modifying their attack is one of them. With the proper feat investment, a caster can cast the same spell many times and have a different numeric effect each time. For the most part, mundanes can't do this.

ToB fixed this somewhat, but I think it would be cool if mundanes had "attack modifier" feats that could be attached to normal attacks to additional effects. The standard cost would probably be an attack penalty, but other things would be possible

Some fun and useful effects -
blinding
dazing
stunning
deafened
sickened

Additionally, the original combat maneuvers, like trip, bullrush, etc, should probably be incorporated in to the system.

Thoughts?

That is an interesting idea. WoTC usually did it with sneak attack modifying feats- trade some sneak attack damage for an interesting effect on a successful sneak attack.

Of all sourcebooks, the Immortal's Handbook decided melee should have nice things. This was before ToB, so they're called "Metamartial Manoevers", and they work by taking a penalty to hit for a rider effect. You don't get the highest ones until late epic, because it's the Immortals Handbook, but still. Check it out.
