Say you're an Unbodied. You're a monstrous humanoid with the incorporeal subtype.

Monstrous Humanoids must eat, breath, and sleep.

Incorporeal Creatures cannot eat or breath.

They have no means of interacting with or digesting food.

Am I missing something or are there oceans of dead creatures with the incorporeal subtype?

There obviously must be an incorporeal ecosystem making incorporeal food and air.

As an unbodied (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/unbodied.htm), specifically, you can definately get around that by way of the Sustenance (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/sustenance.htm) power; however, most incorporeal creatures are undead, and don't care.

I do, however, think it's mostly a case of "the designers didn't think about it much".
