I never understood what it means.

It's something people yell when they need to get down a hallway quickly. it means for everyone to move to one side. Usually it's shouted by security or medical personel.

"Get out of the way" is too vague. People will move in every direction. "One side" tells them to move towards the closest wall, freeing up the middle.
