where are some good tinkerer type classes? classes that use technology like clockwork or steampowered weapons. no gunpowder or explosives are wanted. construct building, that kind of stuff.

Artificer.
Oh, more? Well, I've found that re-fluffing classes works fine. A character of mine has a focused energy gun, a jet pack that allows him to fly; but can also be set to produce a cloud of concealing steam, and aether goggles that allow him to see invisible objects as well as see in total darkness. What is he?
I've got a Factotum re-flavored as a mad scientist as well. If you don't mind hellish imbalance, you could look at the Bodger from Privateer Press' Iron Kingdoms 3.x rules. There are quite a few home brew classes floating about. Hm, heck, just about any character with high enough Craft and Knowledge: Engineering could make the cut, if need be.
OH! I know, again, it's 3rd party, but the Master, from War of the Lance might be worth a gander. Best of luck to ye!

Artificer.
I have to say, Artificers only offer a feat to this class concept (craft homunculus), the rest is useless.
that and the crafting pool.

Artificer, Effigy Master (CArc), Maester (CAdv) are the closest in the D&D setting that I can think of. Since this is homebrew, I could mention this class

'Nother route you could go, again with re-fluffing, I know, is a Psion (Shaper). Astral Construct has been used as a model for various things.
Oh, found this bit of home brew that made me think of this thread: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232069

Well, I made a thing that some people like here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114229). Feel free to pilfer any ideas ya like from it and its PrC's.
There was also a really good Spark class (Girl Genius style) around here...I'm having some trouble finding it, though :smallconfused:
