Everyone has them some people are just wrong

The abjurant champion(which is who that is) specializes in magical protection spells. The entire schtick of that PrC is the efficient use of spells in place of armor and shields.

Additionally, that is the single most punchable face in all of fantasy illustration. Combined with an absolutely hideous sword and a scorn-worthy shield, and, well... Why would you do that!

Yeah, this was pretty much my rationale. I saw the picture in a thread about poor art in D&D, and realized that other people's opinions about it meshed well with my own. The mustache and the sword in particular.

That being said, I recognize that there are good elements in the picture, but, well, hyperbole. Good tool to produce a somewhat humorous effect, which is what I was going for.

That's just the Fantasy Armour Equation approaching 0%.

You see, the equation has three Variables, X, Y and Z. X and Y are arbitrary measurements of skill in Martial practices, X, and Magical Talent, Y, however, the numbers cannot be identical, if they are increase X by 10%. Z represents the total percentage of the body that is protected by armour.

For this, we need a couple of equations:

Q = X-Y

Z = (Q/(X+Y))X100

So, let's start with an X of 30 and a Y of 0

Meaning that the Q for this equation becomes 30

Meaning that Z = 100%, full armour

If we have two different numbers, let's say X is 0 and Y is 30

We get: Q = -30
Therefore: Z = -100%, no armour

But, if we have both at 30 (So X = 33 and Y = 30) Z = 4%, partial armour.

I hope that sates your curiosity.

Defining Q barely shortens the formula for Z at all, and you used a multiplication cross in the same equation as a variable X (the whole point of using a dot for multiplication is to avoid confusing people like that).

Z=((X-Y)/(X+Y))*100%

Better.:smallwink:

2013-06-13, 06:03 AM
Ah, well, I only know the basics of advanced formulae mathmatics and creation.

Also, the equation is to figure out the percentage, having the % symbol at the end changes the answer, so it should look like:

Z=((X-Y)/(X+Y))*100

Much better.

Funny thing; our DM had Lolth as nonevil and on good terms with Correlon, but she (and the other gods) also had different aspects; ala the Hindu gods; and the differences between said aspects were what caused the tension between Drow and Elves.

Heh. That reminds me of one Pantheon I once saw, which had five elemental gods, each with about three aspects. Fire, I think, was the Light of Civilization, the Warmth of Love and the Flames of Destruction. And so on. I like that kind of thing, makes mythology a bit more interesting.

……whelp!

its official.

evil drow was never a thing. it has always been Drizzt, forever, even the supposedly evil goddess is just the result of a jealous ex-boyfriend god being a jerk.

new theory: all the "evil drow" are just sophisticated constructs designed to raise the real chaotic good drow to rebel against evil tyrannical societies. thats how their messed up society works, they are all robots, and they all raise the real drow to become chaotic good rebels in a convoluted manner. because that is Lolth's real design.

Ha a campaign to test 4e when it first came out. There was a convoluted magical effect controlled by an artifact at a location aligned to certain cosmic shifts; at this one time, place and purpose divinity could be altered, eradicated or realized. Our local selfish ass elf thief actually usurped the McGuffin... And instead of becoming a deity, used it to reconcile the elven trinity. Llolth is now one of the good gods again, and it was a pretty sweet campaign shift. I've carried it along all my campaigns.

The way I parse it, it says "a RPG writer played as a good Darth Vader".

The way I parse it, it says "a RPG writer played as a good Darth Vader".

It's refference to his book Play Dirty, in which he gives two easy ways (through you could say they're the same way really) to mess with your players when playing in estabilished continuity or story. One is called "Bad Boy Corwin" which is about reshaping the story, so the original protgonist was real bad guy all along and is manipulating the players to do his dirty work, while keeping the mask of the hero. The other it's it's opposite, about reshaping the story so the villain is suddenly the good guy. It's called "Good Man Vader". Example Wick brings is about how he pulled it out in Star Wars, revealing to players that Obi-Wan and Yoda lied to them about Vader, who is really a good person, not vile Sith Lord.

Image taken from Bogleech's "How other monsters could cause a zombie apocalypse-type scenario" article; specifically the part talking about a hypothetical Skeleton apocalypse where skeletons started gaining free will and bursting out of their fleshy prisons with no reason given.

Also; fun fact; this is technically a legal use of Animate Dead in Pathfinder; given that the spell says that when animating a skeleton; it says that you may use "one intact corpse or skeleton..." It says nothing about whether the Skeleton has to be alive so...

It's refference to his book Play Dirty,

Ahhh, Play Dirty, the book in which EVERYTHING on your character sheet can be used against you, including the "advantages"! The book that puts the 'D-Bag' in "DM". The one recounting the campaign where he brags about getting one player to sit at the table for 6 sessions without EVER GETTING TO DO ANYTHING. (Which is the one that REALLY offends me. Wick needs to mow that guy's lawn for him or something, just to pay him back for that chunk of lifespan he wasted.)

Seriously, don't try that at home. Unless like Wick says he intended, the whole point of the campaign is to make as many players as possible quit, like some RPG version of the old carnival attraction "50$ to the man who can last 5 minutes in the ring with Mangler Mulligan" - that sort of thing was popular back before the invention of liability lawsuits.

And you'd have to mangle canon immensely to make Vader a good guy - he tortured his own daughter and stood by and watched while an inhabited planet was blown to bits. He might be a _victim_, if he really did have a kill-switch in with all his other cybernetics, but possible clues that he was a _good_ guy are in mighty short supply.

Okay, angry rant ends here. Now, tax:

It wasn't a kill-switch exactly, but the life support functions of his suit were highly susceptible to electricity, like the Emperor's Force Lightning. It's part of why Vader never uses it himself.

The source for her "new" alignment stemmed from me reading through her backstory in the Forgotten Realms materials, which read very similar to creeds written amongst religions to malign figures in the current mythology whenever a new mythology moves into an area; it planted the idea of an elven cleric, or even Corellon himself, has made his former lover into the victim of character assassination. It happens all the time in real-world religions. Take the Lilith story as one example, or the succubus myth itself (real world succubi didn't drain anything, they just wanted to have sex with you, possibly non-consensual while you were asleep; and the idea of a woman who wants to have sex with a man isn't seen as particularly "scary" to our modern sensibilities, so it got jazzed up a bit). Izanami is another, as is Hades. Neither were "bad" gods, just "icky," so their evil traits got played up in popular culture.

Of course. There is always the story of Leraje.

You know the story of Leraje?

Leraje was an elven archer that had a small legend built up around her for being the best archer. So Corellon challenges her to an archery duel. She declares the target to be her own heart.

She waits until Corellon fires, then shoots his arrow out of the air and the backflip of her own arrow pierces her heart.

Corellon decides she's a selfish egotistical (horrible woman) and removes her from reality, declares any legends about her to be heresy, and curses her to an eternity of torment covered in pustules.

I hate Corellon, the god of elven selfishness.

Right, he forgets to mention that the entire thing happens because Lolth compliments her.

No, seriously, the story is absurd, especially because

1. A single arrow shouldn't be enough to kill a quasi-divine being
2. Resurrection makes such an act without real consequences anyways

So, really, even with the authors' spin on the story about it being Leraje's pride that is the problem, it's clearly that Corellon can't handle his servants getting compliments and would rather curse them for all eternity rather than see that they really are as good (or better) than him.

But this is all off topic - why I didn't post on the issue when it came up before, but this made it irresistible for me.

It was also because of her pride, which has always been a no-no when it comes to dealing with deities.

Or stupidity for agreeing to a contest about shooting yourself in the heart.

Edit: He didn't remove her from existence and ban her stories because she was prideful, but because he was embarrassed for making a herald of someone dumb enough to willingly shoot themselves in the heart to prove their skill.

Like a good 90% of vestiges, the name is drawn from a Goetic demon in the Lesser Key of Salomon.

From Wiki:

In demonology, Leraje is a mighty Great Marquis of Hell who has thirty legions of demons under his power. He causes great battles and disputes, and makes gangrene wounds caused by arrows. Some authors say this demon belongs to the zodiacal sign of Sagittarius.

He is depicted as a gallant and handsome archer clad in green, carrying a bow and quiver.

Other spellings: Lerajie, Leraie, Leraikha, Leraye, Loray, Oray.

Interestingly, here, he's male, like most demons.

….yea, I'm still sticking with "Lolth is actually good" interpretation because challenging someone to an archery competition then designing the target as the person who complimented your archery is a jerk move.

that and pride myths were always kind of flimsy to me. an especially flimsy part of myth when myth is already very, very flawed.

Duelists get an ability that lets them ignore free strikes from enemies (basically a free attack you get at anyone leaving your melee reach with a bonus to hit and an extra die of damage - think of them like AoOs from DnD) and access to the Two Weapon Fighting ability.

Storm Sorcerer provides various wind and lightning spells (of course) as well as an innate speed bonus. One of the spells available to Storm Sorcerers functions a lot like Corvo's Blink Power - letting them cross short-ish distances (about 30-feet when you convert the tabletop's scale) instantly. Basically; a Duelist/Storm Sorcerer is a fast, mobile swordsman with a variety of little tricks up their sleeves (like a spell that makes them immune to any ranged attacks from more than 3" away - that's on the tabletop's scale, it uses the same combat system as the wargames, basically.

Don't think this needs much explanation - a wealthy author in Manhattan is functionally modern aristocracy.

There's probably plenty of possibilities I'm not thinking of, though, or that I couldn't think of an image for. Like that Trollkin Fell Caller/Long Rider - Trollvahkiin-on-a-Horse.

Explaination: Extra Traits feat for a total of -2 Metamagic adjustment on one spell, one level of Crossblooded Sorcerer to get +2 damage per dice (+1 on any element, +2 on favoured), then take levels in Evocation (Admixture) specialist to spontaneously change damage element 3+Int/day. Jack up caster level and apply Intensify Spell, add Empower Spell when able. I remember hitting around the 20d6 mark with a level 10 version of this character.

Even if they are all in possession of Logia type powers, each of them is also proficient in the use of Haki. Besides, being a Fire user didn't help Ace against Magma.

Being made of rubber is a reason why I'd assume Luffy is not Bulky
Another being that instead of getting large muscles his rubber body becomes stronger or something like that so super compacted muscle.
Doesn't really matter when early on he punches out a sea monster

Waker; True, very true the Admirals all have Haki and Luffy does not at that point. And all 4 fighters had Logia fruits.

Jade Dragon; True but at the same time who knows? Stranger things could happen. Especially if my current bet comes true for the end of the current arc

Clearly we have been playing different Fallouts. The radroaches I've killed for meat were the size of a medium dog. Meanwhile in my actual florida, these bugs refuse to get any bigger than about half of a baseball (though that's fairly sizeable for an insect).

That might actually make them deadlier. Assuming you don't use VATS, that would make bugs a real pain to hit, especially if they fly and move quickly.

I dunno, some of the ones I've seen sure seemed like they were the size of a small dog. Then again, that might have been because it jumped on the back of my head in the middle of the night, causing me to bash my head against the wall and I only caught a fleeting glimpse of it as it ran down the hallway. Biggest I've actually seen was about 2-3 inches.

In a similar vein, I once had a d20 that rolled nothing above a 9. One night, after about twenty minutes of absently rolling it, I looked at it and said, "I will give you one more roll, if it isn't above a ten I am throwing you away." It came up as a 1. I stood up, grabbed a ceramic bowl and some rubbing alcohol, put the d20 and some alcohol in the bowl, put the rest of my dice in a circle around the bowl, and lit the d20 on fire. After it melted, I picked up its charred remains and held it aloft so the rest of my dice could see what happens when you displease me. For the rest of the night they all rolled above half.

Dice may be inanimate objects, but they do know fear.

So the good news is if you put the die with the 1 facing down (d10s are complicated, since whether the highest outcome is 10 or 9 changes based on the system) and flash-heat it in the microwave, most plastic dies have just enough of their weight shifted downwards that they are more likely to come up as the highest number on the die. But woe betide you if you use such a die in a low-roll system like GURPS.

Quick, raise your hands if you remember Kid Radd or 8-Bit Theatre *raises own hand*

if you don't? then congratulations! your experiencing the pop-cultural information speed up effect. we get info so fast nowadays, and updates about new information so much, that we don't spend as much time on older things.
this causes this old stuff to grow distant from us faster. a 2004 meme might as well be an antique. anything from the 1990's is probably ancient to the internet.
people move on from older to newer works so fast that well….lets just say that when you finish one work, you better be prepared to start up another one on the same website, cause otherwise people will move on, and you'll be lost to the depths of the internet, like last month's new celebrity rock band.

humanity: we used to honor celebrities we didn't think exist for thousands of years in oral memory. now we forget about celebrities that started existing last month even though we have the greatest machine of memory on the face of the planet. same with meme's, webcomics….modern pop-culture is a constantly changing thing, and harsh to what it leaves behind.

It certainly is. You can probably find the picture by putting Kvothe into Deviantart.

The text is from the Name of the Wind, or am I mixing something up in my head?

Yep, it's the back cover blurb. What an amazing blurb it is, and indeed, an amazing bard as well.

Vanguard, from my pow, is like a best mix of tank, dps and battle controller. If this would be 4E, vanguard would be multiclassed barbarian/fighter/wizard. Don't know if psychic warrior can do all that, but damn, it's impressive.

Still, it vanguard, so you automatically get 10 awesome points right there. If only it would be FemShep, you would get 100 more. Also, how sad it is I can identify the mission in question from that single screenshot?

Now, can we get some asari demotivators?

Well, except for the fact that the image is actually of an Adept, since they're using Singularity :smalltongue:

That's the Purgatory prison ship mission, right?

Nope. It's the hijacked freighter, the one that leads you to the blue suns base with the fake distress signal. I remember because I always wanted to steal one of the fighter craft from there and play a space invaders-esque mini-game with the Normandy in the background.

Sort of. He took ranks in dinosaurs, but neglected math and common sense.

It's a bit odd. If everything he does is true then he has invented transmogrifying guns and cloning devices making him the greatest genius the world has ever seen. If, however, it's all in his head he's shown on several occasions to be able to be the best student in his class (his clone saga for instance) he just doesn't normally care enough to put in the effort

It's in his head. The only part that may not entirely be in his head is Hobbes, if there's some magic in the world. But really, his transmogrifier is a cardboard box with a dial on it.

He may, however, be the smartest person who ever lived. Not only is he conventionally brilliant when not engaging in rebellion against the conformity of society, he's also down-to-Earth (assuming Hobbes really is his imagination, then he's capable of taking on a far more conservative personality, albeit still with six-year-old playfulness and logic), a great actor (see above, and when he decided to use the transmogrifier to be a tiger, he convinced himself he wanted a tuna sandwich. He's great at changing his personality, and the best part is they're still all Calvin, which is the mark of a truly great actor when a little bit of yourself gets in there without ruining it), and a great philosopher.

This, on the other hand, I have seen happen in a game before. Except that the shark breathed acid and the fight was on a giant robot.

It was later preserved with Gentle Repose and carried around to be used as a nearly endless source of rather tangy sashimi.
