Lexitheurge (3.5)

Forward
First of all I hope I'm fine posting this. The mechanics and even some of the terms should be different enough not to step on any toes with the non-OGL (I pretty much rewrote most of them). That and it still references and requires Tome of Magic for gameplay.
Other than that, well, we all know the many problems with the Truenamer, but while the mechanics were poorly executed it had wonderful fluff and it's basic structure was interesting.
Besides being really difficult to play, the Truenamer felt different than any other class. While others have tried at their own fixes, often well balanced, I feel like they lost the feel the class had.

Design Notes
Mechanics aside for a moment I don't really feel like there are many scholarly classes at play. Sure you have the Wizard, but other than memorizing spells there aren't really any mechanics, or class abilities for that matter, to reflect this. As usual I'm aiming for tier 3, but I'm concerned about whether or not I hit the point I'm aiming for.
One of the biggest problems with the Truenamer was the lack of power, complete with inability to target more than a single creature. I've revised this, with the Rhetoric ability, to allow the Lexitheurge to target multiple creatures at once. This coupled with the option of using Intonations to empower them, but in place of Rhetoric, allows for incredible versatility.
The rest of the mechanics, while mostly rewritten, end with similar, but more functional, structure. And the buffed up bonus from Truename Researcher seemed appropriate for the amount of work you have to put in to discover a truename.

Proficiencies: The Lexitheurge is proficient with all simple weapons, but she is not proficient with any armor or shields.

Important Note: You should assume that, unless noted otherwise, the mechanics here replace those found within the ToM, except where specific rules are referenced within abilities. I have provided page references for those. Simply using a term is not considered referencing it.

Class Abilities
Lexicology
The Lexitheurge knows all Utterances of a level she can cast, or enunciate, from the Lexicon of the Evolving Mind. In order to enunciate any utterance she must first memorize it. She can memorize the listed number of utterances with her Lexicon, see below, at one time. When she memorizes new utterances she forgets those she previously memorized.
Enunciating an utterance takes a standard action, provokes attacks of opportunity, and is subject to concentration. An utterance otherwise functions as a supernatural ability and targets a single creature within 60ft. Although nobody need hear her to be affected by an utterance she must still enunciate it to have any effect. It is difficult to speak when she can't hear herself, or sound has been silenced around her, imposing a 20% chance the utterance will fail if she tries.
Each time she enunciates an utterance she must choose whether it's normal effect or reverse takes effect. And though she may enunciate any utterance she has memorized at will, the Lexitheurge is subject to the Law of Resistance, see below. The save for any utterance has a DC of 10 + 1/2 her Lexitheurge level + her intelligence modifier. An utterance has an effective spell level equal to it's level and is not dismissible.

Lexicon
To memorize utterances, or change which ones she has memorized, the Lexitheurge must spend 4 hours studying her Lexicon. If she loses her Lexicon she can replace it, requiring ardous research or experimentation, with 24 hours of uninterrupted work.
Replacing her Lexicon costs the same as for a Wizards spellbook. The notes within appear to be in nonsensical languages and ramblings to a non-Lexitheurge. They are of no use to spellcasters.

Law of Resistance
The universe attempts to return to it's default state as quickly as possible every time you enunciate an utterance. Each time she enunciates the same utterance per encounter, after the first, it has a cumulative +5% chance to fail (max 30%).

Know thy Name (Ex)
The Lexitheurge automatically knows her own personal Truename. Whenever she needs speak it she make speak an abbreviation of it (as to not risk giving it away).

Erudite (Ex)
Versed in abstract thought the Lexitheurge may make any Knowledge check untrained, without penalty, and gains half her Lexitheurge level as a bonus to any intelligence ability check she makes.

Hidden Lore (Ex)
The Lexitheurge has read many books, and heard many stories, and can make a special knowledge check to see if she knows any relevant information on notable locals, legendary items, or noteworthy places. She makes an intelligence check and then compares it to the chart for Bardic Knowledge (see 'Bard', PH 28).

Lv2 > Study Opponent (Ex)
The Lexitheurge sizes up a foe, who she must have line of sight to (and be in 30ft of), as a full round action (no AoO), learning a number of strengths and weaknesses equal to 3 + her intelligence modifier, to a minimum of 3.
She makes an opposed intelligence check, against the creature she is studying. An unconscious or helpless creature is not allowed an opposed check to resist Study Opponent. If a creature has more strengths or weaknesses than a single round of studying reveals than she learns the most powerful ones first. The Lexitheurge can study a creature again to reveal additional information.
Attack forms and special abilities are common strengths, while energy vulnerability is a common weakness. Protection against Divination also protects against the effects of this ability even though it is non-magical in nature.

Lv3, 7, 11, 15, 19 > Field of Knowledge (Ex)
The Lexitheurge, at each of the indicated levels, selects a single Knowledge skill that she hasn't previously chosen for Field of Knowledge. She gains a +6 competence bonus to all Knowledge skills selected.

Lv5 > Truename Researcher
The Lexitheurge may research truenames (see 'Discovering a Personal Truename', ToM 197), but she makes Hidden Lore checks instead of making truespeech checks.
The DC of a saving throw for an utterance is increased by +4 against a creature who's personal truename she knows. Further, she, and any alllies within 60ft, gain a +4 bonus to all saves and checks to resist that creature's attacks and abilities.

Lv6, 10, 14, 18 > Intonations
Whenever the Lexitheurge enunciates an utterance, of the Evolved Mind, she may choose to modify it with a single Intonation, from those she has access to, but must extend the time it takes to enunciate the utterance to a full round action:

[B]6: Vociferate
The range of her utterance increases to 120ft. This Intonation doesn't, however, affect utterances with a range of touch.

10: Protract
Her utterance, if it has a duration other than instantaneous or concentration, has it's duration doubled.

14: Escalate
All of the utterance's variable numeric effects are increased by 50%. This does not affect saving throws, opposed rolls, or non-random variables.

18: Double Speak
Speaking her utterance does not provoke any attacks of opportunity, nor is it subject to the need for concentration.

Lv7, 10, 13, 16, 19 > Utterance Feats
At each of the indicated levels the Lexitheurge, as long as she meets it's prerequisites, selects a feat, of her choice, from the following selection of feat choices:
Utterance of the Craft Tool, Utterance of the Perfected Map, Lexigram of Fortification, Lexigram of Remedy, Lexigram of Sublime Movement, Lexigram of the Unfettered, Lexigram of the Deflection, or Utterance Focus.

Lv9, 14, 19 > Rhetoric (Su)
As a full round action the Lexitheurge may enunciate two of her memorized utterances, of the Evolving Mind, in quick succession. These utterances may not target the same creature as one another.
At level 14 she may either enunciate two of these utterances as a standard action, or enunciate three of them as a full round action.
And at level 18 when she would enunciate three utterances, as a full round action, the Lexitheurge may instead choose to enunciate four of them.
Special: When enunciating multiple instances of a particular utterance the Lexitheurge only increases the failure chance from the Law of Resistance by 5%, as if only one had been enunciated, though she still checks for each individually.
If interrupted when enunciating multiple utterances she makes a single concentration check (use the highest effective spell level for DCs) for all of them.

Lv12+ > Behold the Named (Su)
The Lexitheurge may, a limited number of times per day, Scry, as the spell, upon any creature who's personal truename she knows. She does not require a mirror or pool of water for this ability to function.
Her target does not gain a save to resist, nor does spell resistence apply, but she can only view the subject for 1d4 rounds before the scrying ends.

Lv18 > Say My Name (Su)
This ability works as detailed for Say My Name and I am There (see 'Truenamer', ToM 201).

Feats
Utterance of the Crafted Tool
Prerequisites: 3rd level utterances
This feat may be taken multiple times. Each time you take this feat you learn a single utterance, of the Crafted Tool, of a level no higher than one less than your maximum utterance level.
You enunciate this utterance as an utterance one level higher than listed. This utterance is otherwise subject to the same rules as normal utterances, including memorization, but targets an object instead of a creature.

Utterance of the Perfected Map
Prerequisites: 4th level utterances
This feat may be taken multiple times. Each time you take this feat you learn a single utterance, of the Perfected Map, of a level no higher than two less than your maximum utterance level.
You enunciate this utterance as an utterance two levels higher than listed. This utterance is otherwise subject to the same rules as normal utterances, including memorization, but targets an area instead of a creature.

Lexigram of Fortification
Prerequisites: 2nd level utterances
You speak a single syllable as a swift action, granting you with DR/- equal to half you Lexitheurge level for 1 round. This Lexigram is, however, subject to the Law of Resistance, as if it were an utterance.

Lexigram of the Remedy
Prerequisites: 2nd level utterances
You speak a single syllable as a swift action, removing any ongoing, but not instantaneous or permanent, personal afflictions as is desired.
This does not affect an area of effect, but would allow you to ignore it's effects for 1 round. This Lexigram is, however, subject to the Law of Resistance, as if it were an utterance.

Lexigram of Sublime Movement
Prerequisites: 2nd level utterances
You speak a single syllable as an immediate action, mimicking the effects of the Flicker mystery. This Lexigram is, however, subject to the Law of Resistance, as if it were an utterance.

Lexigram of the Unfettered
Prerequisites: 3rd level utterances
You speak a single syllable as a swift action, granting yourself the benefits of Freedom of Movement, as the spell, for 1 round. This Lexigram is, however, subject to the Law of Resistance, as if it were an utterance.

Lexigram of Deflection
Prerequisites: 3rd level utterances
You speak a single syllable as an immediate action, in response to an utterance, spell, or spell like ability cast that specifically declared you as a target or as one of it's targets.
Make an opposed intelligence check. If successful you halt the effects of their ability, possibly wasting their resources in the process. This Lexigram is, however, subject to the Law of Resistance, as if it were an utterance.

Utterance Focus
Prerequisites: 1st level utterances
This feat may be taken multiple times. Each time you select a single utterance, that you haven't selected before, gaining a +2 to the saving throw DCs for it.

Proficiencies: The Librarian does not gain additional weapon or armor proficiencies beyond those she had before.

Class Abilities

Incarnum
The Librarian is considered the number of indicated levels higher in single a Incarnum advancing class, such as the Incarnate or Soulborn (see MoI), for the purpose of meldshaping, including how many soul melds she shape, how many chakra's she can bind, which tier of chakra binds she has access to, and the amount of essentia she has.

Lexicology
The Librarian is considered the number of indicated levels higher in single a Lexicology advancing class, such as the Lexitheurge, for the purpose of how many utterances she can memorize, the highest level of utterances she can memorize, and determining saving throw DCs.

Eidetic Memory
Memorizing entire books is a common hobby for many librarians. She gains her full Librarian level to intelligence ability checks and Knowledge checks. Furthermore, with an intelligence check (DC 15) the Librarian can recall something she, or in this case the player, has forgotten.

Lv2 > Breadth of Knowledge (Ex)
Whenever the Librarian memorizes utterances, or changes which once she has memorized, she gains an epiphany into some working of the world. Effectively, she may select a single Knowledge skill, for which she gains her Librarian class level as a bonus to checks for (until she next memorizes or changes utterances).

Lv3 > Improved Study Opponent (Ex)
The Librarian may study an opponent as a swift action, instead of as a full round action, but takes a -2 penalty to her check when accelerating Study Opponent in this way.

Lv4 > Study Terrain (Ex)
The Librarian can size up nearby terrain within line of sight with a full round action (no AoO) of study, in an attempt to learn something important about it. She makes an intelligence check and compares it to below:

25 : common or local information; such as the presence of caves, the type of soil, or famous landmarks. This also identifies the direction, but not exact location, of creatures who are hiding or invisible within 60ft, if any.

30 : uncommon; such as how the terrain was formed, if it was magically tampered with, or point out hazardous terrain. This also identifies and pierce the effects of any illusion(s) with 60ft.

40 : obscure; no idea here

She may attempt to study terrain as many times as she wants. Protection against Divination in an area increases the Study Terrain DCs by +10 within that specific zone.

Lv5 > Chakra Binds : Truename (Su)
The Librarian has learned to bind chakras to her very personal truename itself. She gains an extra chakra slot for which she can bind any single chakra, even of a type she doesn't actually have access to.

Lv7 > With a Glance (Su)
Studying an opponent can be done as a free action, but she takes a -4 penalty when doing so. The Librarian may not Study Opponent again in a round after using With a Glance.

Lv8 > Chakra Binds : Support (Su)
With the power of truenames the Librarian has learned to bind chakras to other creatures. Essentially she may provide the benefits of a single chakra, that she is benefiting from herself (except her Truename chakra), to all willing allies, of her choice, within 60ft. Providing, rescinding, or changing which allies, and/or which chakra, are affected by this ability is a swift action.

Lv10 > Identify Truename (Su)
As a full round action the Librarian may attempt to discern the personal truename of a creature, who she has line of sight to, within 30ft, simply by studying them. This check functions as for Study Opponent, but she takes a -10 penalty to her check to do so.

Proficiencies: The Numenologist gains proficiency with all martial weapons, as well as with both light armor and bucklers.

Class Abilities

Aura (Ex)
The Numenologist projects an aura of good or evil, similar to a Cleric, which corresponds to her own alignment. A neutral Numenologist projects no aura.

Lexicology
The Numenologist is considered the number of indicated levels higher in single a Lexicology advancing class, such as the Lexitheurge, for the purpose of how many utterances she can memorize, the highest level of utterances she can memorize, and determining saving throw DCs.

Spellcasting
Having arrived upon the assumption that Lexicology is the truest expression of the divine, and not the deities, the Numenologist seemingly taps into divine energy without need for worship or faith.
She casts divine spells, drawn from the Cleric list. She begins knowing one spell, of first level, and learns an additional spell, of any level she can cast, at every level of Numenologist afterward.
She can only cast so many spells, of any level, per day, though she gains bonus spells for a high intelligence. The Numenologist can cast a lower level spell by expending a higher level spell slot, though this doesn't change the spell's level.
The saving throw for any spell has a DC of 16 + 1/2 her Numenologist level + her charisma modifier, although expending a spell slot of higher level than needed to cast the spell increases the DC by +2.

Turn or Rebuke Undead
The Numenologist may Turn and Rebuke Undead with an effective Cleric level of twice her Numenologist level. She chooses whether she turns or rebukes undead each time she uses this ability.

Lv2 > Sanguine Health (Ex)
Infused with the power of the divine the Numenologist gains immunity to all poison and disease, even those magical in nature.

Lv4 > Obscure Personal Truename (Ex)
The Numenologist has gone to extensive lengths to hide her truename. No creature may research her personal truename. Other methods, such as the Librarian of Lost Souls' Identify Truename ability, might still be able to discern her truename.

Lv6 > Invoke Truename (Su)
Having knowledge of another's name is power and nobody knows that better than the Numenologist. She may use her Turn or Rebuke Undead ability against any creature who's personal truename she knows, even if they aren't undead.

Lv10 > Unname (Su)
If the Numenologist destroys a creature, who's personal truename she knows, with her Turn or Rebuke Undead ability they are erased from existence as the Numenologist alters their very state of existence. A creature who has been scrubbed can still be brought back with a resurrection spell or similar ability, but the caster must know their truename or have somebody there to supply it when casting.

Speaking of which it was supposed to per encounter. I hadn't updated the mechanics online yet.

I really don't see why the Law of Resistance is to terrible. Even at per day you could probably fire off the same utterance twice with minimal chance of failure (that's 32 spells per day), and keep going way beyond a spellcaster.

Although I think I do want to remove the limits to multiple utterances at once, because it's kind of silly now that I think about it. I can't even think of any fluff to support it and I remember it being annoying when I played the Truenamer.

edit: And now, without the secondary clause and with Rhetoric the chances of multiple utterances failing at once are pretty slim. The failure chance is mostly there to prevent spamming, but I really do think it is part of the flavor of the class.

Especially at low levels, there are maybe 3 utterances you will use with any regularity due to their combat usefulness. Firing one off per turn, in combats of 4 rounds each and 4 times per day, means you're using a given one 4-5 times, which means at the end of the day you're worse than a fighter because you're missing 50% of the time and not even dealing damage.

Per-encounter is better, but what truenaming really needs is a better set of abilities, not a new class chassis.

I don't really see any problem with the Truenamer's utterances alone in themselves. While targeting needed fixed I would say they otherwise offer a rough equivalent to 4th or 5th level spells in power.

I'm not aiming for the power of a wizard or sorcerer. I don't see the Lexitheurge as an arcane force of nature, but a savant of carefully applied knowledge and skill. The class is meant to shine by making others shine anyway. My problem with a lot of fixes is that they attempt to bring it to a level I don't think fits the theme.

I'm actually aiming for a class that functions at the level of the Bard, but with battlefield control instead of guile and charm. Hopefully, the Intonations and Rhetoric ability bring it to that point. That's why I allow those modifications for almost free.

If I haven't reached that balance point though I would like to know in particular what I can add to the class to make it so.

A few points I'm debating on:

Would it be fine to bump the Lexitheurge up to d8 hp? And if so is it too unfitting?
Should I bump Rhetoric back a few levels so she can eventually enunciate an additional utterance beyond what she can now?
What could I add for a capstone to reward players who decide not to PrC out?
Does Truename Researcher have a good enough benefit for the work involved in discovering someone's personal truename?

Both the Librarian of Lost Souls and Numenologist are up. As a Librarian you can mix truenaming with soulmelds, while being a Numenologist lets you unlock the power of the divine without faith or religion.

Really digging this class, but I do have a question about the study opponent feature. What specifically counts as a strength? Is max hp valid information for the purpose of this feature? Or AC for that matter?

Thanks a lot, and I would say yes.

Any racial information, statistic, ability, or feat the creature has is open game to detection, among other things. But it wouldn't, for example, be able to tell current HP or detect an effect created by a different creature than the one you are studying. Non-permanant buffs and debuffs should probably be detected separately from the statistic they affect.

It is meant to be really broad so that if a DM has an ability on the BBEG that he wants to keep secret he can do so (after all 'most powerful' is subjective).

Interesting, solid re-write. I'm not super familiar with the Truenamer, but here's my quick thoughts:

The good:

Ditching the Truespeak skill
The "free metamagic" on Lexicons granted by Intonation and Rhetoric, although I'd need to read through the lexicons again to make sure this works and is reasonable.
I actually like the Law of Resistance although I question whether or not it is necessary with the decreased access to Lexicons memorized/day.
Greatly expanded skill list on top of the above make him more Tier 2-3ish, since he has more to do and contribute.

Things I'm curious/sad about:

I'm almost sad to see the skill go, even though it was probably necessary. Did you consider keeping it?
Any reason why you dropped the Sending from the original class?
I'm not a fan of the fact that Truenamer are effectively taxed two+ feats to access Crafted Tool and Perfected Map now. Why the change? Why not keep a certain amount known?
Will you be rewriting some of the Lexicons as well? Part of the problem for Truenamer's is that they have precious few actually useful Lexicons, in addition to the obvious broken skill check issue.

EDIT:

A few points I'm debating on:

Would it be fine to bump the Lexitheurge up to d8 hp? And if so is it too unfitting?

1) It'd be fine, but I feel like it doesn't fit the "squishy scholar" theme.
2) You're effectively giving her a nerfed quicken spell...really it occupies a weird space between Twin and Quicken with some extra restrictions. So I think it's fine that she gets it at the level she does, and fine to cap it at 4.
3) Why not keep "Say my Name"? It's of questionable power, but is undoubtably the coolest captstone in 3.5.
4) Absolutely. +4 Save DC and +4 to saves is nothing to sneeze at, and worth the work before a party goes up against the Lich Lord BBEG. It's narrow, but flavorful and strong.

Hawk7915, truthfully the biggest reason for keeping the Law of Resistance is flavor. I just can't get myself to get rid of it.

Keeping the truespeech skill? Actually yes. I'd debated on allowing it to identify utterances in the same way spellcraft identifies skills. I'm still thinking about it actually.

As far as Sending goes, it just didn't fit into the progression. That and I wanted to limit the uses per day abilities. I wanted truenaming to remain as much per encounter as possible.

I changed crafted tool and perfected map over to feats because they felt tacked on when I played the Truenamer. I felt it was simpler to separate them and focus on making the evolving mind utterances more usable.
I am however thinking about giving the feats to the Lexitheurge in some sort of progression though. But I'm concerned about whether or not I can remain in tier 3 if I do so.

I don't think I'll be rewritting any of the utterances. While they are weak I like the flavor and oddity they have now. That and the system I have in place now might fall apart if I make the utterances more powerful.

You're right. I'll keep the d6s.

I had no intention of removing say may name. I actually intended a different ability for the capstone, so that's why I moved that ability to level 18. I just can't think of anything that would outshine the previous capstone.

And good, I was concerned about whether or not Truename Researcher was good enough. Plus I think the PrCs offer some pretty powerful abilities for it.

Thank you for the interest and the peach.
