Hi playgrounders, here goes the story

Our 3 man party has come into a tough situation,(we got ourselves there, no TPK-ing DM). There's this lvl 5 or even 6 half orc barbarian/fighter guard captian that must die within the next 36 in game hours. 2 lvl barb 2 lvl fighter +1 or two lvls between those 2 classes. half orc but not stupid enough.

We are a lvl 3 rogue, a lvl 3 cleric(retribution and healing domains), and lvl 4 duskblade. and we have to fight him.

We know that every evening(completely dark unless moonlight) he leaves city and goes to a hut where he has a guild, and he comes back to sleep in the barracks. During day he has bussiness in the castle/barracks, so we cant touch him in there.

So we decided to camp the hut, well the hut was visited by his coleagues 1st, so now they know that 3 ppl want to reach to him,(not necessarily harm him). We tried to set up a trap but he doesnt follow the road nor any fixxed path as he crosses a flat snowy valley to reach the hut.

What could we possibly do? none of us can see in darkness, we are humans, torches will give us up(only a familiar has 30 feet darkvision), we cant fight him within the city, he doesnt have a private place in the city. he usually visits the city sensual-dancers* inn but everyone there knows and are friendly towards him, so we are too scared to pay them to buy their help into traping him, as it might turn against us.

Our rogue is female, but cha is low, and we think that if she tries to seduce him he will not fall for it as he is a god damned ugly half orc!!!! Why would a human young girl(which is also brad new in town) try to approach him? And he is already suspicious about that group of ppl searching for him.

Well, we are out of ideas. and even if we can manage to set up a fight just outsifde the city walls, we dont think we could get him in a traigh fight. the lvls are too low and the hp are few, + he is a known monster when it comes to fighting in melee.

So I am here to hear suggestions about this fight. You should know that we have a fly potion and are considering using it in the open against him but we have no clue about what his friends will do and when/where they will appear, and this plan involves just one of us. We also have around 1000 gp in our pouches, but except the very basic magic items the rest must be ordered and crafted, which IIRC takes some days.

ty in advance for the replies.

Get a wagon filled with hay. Set it on fire and roll it infront of the door to the hut setting the hut on fire and trapping him inside. Set up around the hut with bows and readied actions to shoot anyone who comes out any windows. This will either kill him and his friends or at least weaken them enough to where you can go to town on him.

You sure this wont make a 3v1 fight into a 3v6++++ ?

Last time his men approached him, there were 5 of them to report that they heard some ppl in the hut talking about getting him during his way to the hut from the city.

Its possible but it should kill the lower level guys and soften up the Half Orc to where yall can take him. If you need more help. Hiring out some lowlifes for extra muscle is always an option as well.

Do you have the money to buy a Wand of Fireballs? If so, start lobbing them into his hut while he's asleep. If he staggers out after the first one or two, he'll be severely injured and much easier to take down.

Just a thought ...

He'll probably want to eat or drink when he gets home, so in the middle of the day, maybe poison his food and drink?

Join his army/guild? From there, you'll have to improvise. Why do you have to kill him within 36 hours?

And he's a challenge rating of 5 or 6, while your party has a partylevel of 2.5? Ouch!

I didnt mention much about this hut cause the op is already damned long. in there there is a subterrean passage, thats how they listen to us talking without us finding out. so this plan wont work unfortunately. We dont even know what this passage is, maybe it doesnt have other exit and its just a big celar but atm we have no info.

We dont know anyone save for him, the guild is slave traders and since they know that a group of at least 3 ppl are looking for one of them they would be exeptionally suspicious atm.

As for the 36 hours its a time limit forced on us cause of an other quest where a Baneknight cleric wants my head and in about 36 hours he will be here in the city and I must leave or I'll die a painfull death.

And we are fighting this so powerfull guy cause we got ourselves there and cause we were supposed to ambush him, but we blew up. A CR 5 guy against 3 ppl how can shoot at him for 2-3 rounds is a dead guy, that was the original plan. we accepted the headhunting, it was a high risk high reward option.

I think I meantioned that he sleeps in the castle Barracks, which is full of militant guys that are his friends and coleagues. And he eats with them. We dont wanna poison the whole city millitia. We are good ppl.

How good is wisdom of your cleric? What is your budget?

Have Cleric cast Light on some stones and arrows. Familiar should have low-light vision, which should work and which has longer range than his dark vision so it can lead you after him (without need for light). Keep some 200ft of distance.

When you are in a good position spread the stones and arrow around so you can see. Then:

- Start cleric casting Owl's Wisdom (from scroll if you can afford it), follow with Hold Person from cleric (repeat if it doesn't work), then coup de grace him.

or

- Throw Tanglefoot Bags at him and use ranged attacks to kill him,

or

- Summon Monster 1 some spiders, have them throw webs at the orc and finish him with ranged attacks.

EDIT: Of course the safest would be doing all three. That is Rgue and Duskblade prepare light conditions, then cleric casts Owl's Wisdom/Hold Person, others ready actions to throw tangle foot bags at the orc if he enters range. If all of that fails (it really shouldn't...) cleric summons spiders to immobilize the orc.

EDIT2: My advice is quite Cleric-centric I never played Rogue or Duskblade so I don't really know what they could do.

Keep your Everburning Torches tied to your bodies, and hidden under heavy cloth until the time to strike.

Try to be stealthy around the hut. The meeting will certainly take place in the underground portion. When he leaves the hut, spam Command[drop] and Hold Person since his Will save will be garbage. This should give your DPS enough time (and attacks of opportunity, and hopefully CDGs) to whittle him down before he starts whooping you. If Cleric has enough spells/day, consider casting Shield Other to slightly beef up the Rogue or Hexblade. If someone takes too much damage or blows all his spells, that person uses Withdraw to get some distance, then start chucking Tanglefoot Bags and crossbow bolts.

If he fails against Hold Person, Hexblade and Rogue CDG him. If he makes all those Will saves (DC should be around 16, his bonus should be at most +3).

Seconding thugs if possible. A few allies could easily bring this fight into your favor, especially if they can tank him a little.

Well after some OOG chat we decided to attack him in the Inn, when he will go to the hooker he visits every other day.

Waiting for him outside the city might end up boosting his numbers and my party members didnt wanna take the chance. As for the mercenaries they also dont wanna take the chance with them, cuz the guy is poppular, and he also pulls some strings in the city's mafia. So we might get backstabbed.

We have some pots of invisibility and we will try the hold person route, the DC will beat at 18 with an owl's wisdom pot, and we have 2 second lvl spells, aside from the domain slot.

Have the Rogue use disguise and have her enter the room quietly and be cleaning and say she's doing that if she gets noticed blah blah.
Grasp the weapon he uses and/or break the straps on his armor with a knife so he can't wear it.

Also get him with his pants down.
Sneak attack is your friend so is a summon with poison of some sort
What does the Duskblade have in the way of spells?

And Oil Flasks and Alchemist Fire can you get that?
Cause the two together make decent bombs.
4 Oils wrapped around a Alchemist Fire set up in the room and triggered by string rope or a second alchemist fire hitting this one.

Second the Tanglefoot bags. He can't whoop what he can't catch.

Be sure to only land Hold Person when there's someone at most 10ft away who can 5-foot over and CDG before his next turn comes up. That means he only has one Will save between him and death (if his turn comes up before that, he gets two. And that's no good).

Maybe someone can two-hand a Heavy Pick or Scythe, so the x4 crit is practically a guaranteed kill on the CDG.

This sounds like a bad idea. This will leave you with a whole inn of people who saw you kill a guy who not only has ties with military but with mafia to... so you will have both government and private organized crime after you.

I agree with the idea of poisoning this orc, disabling him at a distance is a nice back up to that, but id do with a rogue buffed up with cats grace and every other sneaky and stabby enchantment you've got, follow him through the city and just give him a nice sneak attack with added poison fun.

Or perhaps go for a contact poison and simply cover a rag or other such item with it and throw it at him from a distance.

though if you want the cheap method take your money and do the following.

1: find a group of travelling actors or other performers, rogues will also work.
expected cost 10g

2: dress them up as kings guard (or other such higher nobility law enforcers)
expected cost 100g+ depending on quality of disguises

3: march them up to the orc while he's on his way to the hut and declare he's been charged with treason/slavery or whatever will still, have the most intimidating person do this and follow up with assistance from your entourage.

4: have him manacled and bound in every way you know how, then he's not only at your mercy but able to be questioned, you may be able to bring down the whole evil organisation down.

Bonus: if the evil dudes happen to hear of this event then they may aim their retaliation at whatever justice you have impersonated, which long term should reveal them to said justice.

Last idea: get a big rock, drop it on him

Wear some face-obscuring masks, and don't have any distinctive features or clothing showing. Also, don't refer to each other by name.

Since when do inns turn down masked sketchy guys thick all-obscuring robes? :smalltongue:

You could say you have a skin condition, or someone burned half your face off and you don't want to scare anyone, or some jackass with a Rod of Wonder turned you purple. Any number of explanations work in dnd.

Well We have a contract from the city's duchess to kill the thieves guild master. The thing is that she does know who he is and he is a friend of us, So we created some forged clues that this guy is the thieves guild master ( note that the slave traders which he leader are different guys thatn the thieves guild). So we have the authority to talk to the guards AFTER we killed him, cuz we are supposed to find his blaming clues of his body.

So we must kill him, then when guards arrive " hey guys he was the bad guy, here are the clues, take us to the duchess, she hired us we surrender "

I meant after you start fighting inn-security will be probably quite suspicious

We are working on that atm, we will have to pay some of them or get them too drunk I guess.
