Hi.
Just need some clarification about the requirements for this Prc: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20030413c

I was wondering about the proficiencies requirements. To pick this PrC you have to be proficient with martial weapons. That would normaly mean I would have to take 1 lvl as a fighter. Would I also make the weapon requirements if I would take the Martial Weapons Feat? I play a wizard and I was just wondering if I could still be a Raumathari Battlemage without taking 1 lvl as a fighter.

Yep, you'd meet the requirements if you took the feat.

I don't know that proficiency with a single martial weapon would meet the "proficient with martial weapons" requirement. I'd be inclined to say it doesn't meet the requirement.

Actually it could go either way. It does say "proficient with martial weapons". Weapons. Plural. The feat only gives you proficiency with a single weapon. However, it does not say "proficiency with all martial weapons" which I'm fairly certain at least one PrC somewhere does specify. This may be nitpicking over details. I'd say ask your DM.

Either way, it does say weapons plural, and the feat only gives you one weapon.

No. You would not meet the requirement because Martial Weapon proficiency only gives you proficiency with a single martial weapon, whereas the requirements is proficiency with "martial weapons".

There are lots of ways to gain martial weapon proficiency without taking a level in Fighter though.

Well, generally prestige classes have a requirement of "Proficiency with all martial weapons" (as with the Eldritch Knight), rather than simply "proficient with martial weapons." I would assume that this is what was intended for the Raumathari Battlemage.

Regardless of what was intended, though, the class requires proficiency with martial weapons (as in, more than one), so one Martial Weapon Proficiency feat probably isn't going to cut it.

As to advice, playing a Neraph (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20040613a&page=2) is one of my favorite ways to get free proficiency with martial weapons (and some other cool things).

Because who doesn't want to play a giant toad-person? (And this is coming from somebody who digs less-than-normal races)

Well, you could also be boring and just play an elf to get some free martial weapon proficiencies. But why would you want to be an elf when you can be a giant toad-man?

plus, look at the picture (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/DnD_InWorksApril_battlemage.jpg) for Raumathari Battlemage. look at that weird pallor and sheen on his skin, along with the warts on his face and hands. he's clearly supposed to be some kind of toad-man.

a toad ruamathari battlemage.

Alternately, you could be an Outsider (they get all martial weapon proficiencies), or take a level of Dragonslayer (they get all martial weapon proficiencies at the first level of the PrC, and also get to increase their spellcasting as well).

neraphs are outsiders, which is why we're suggesting them.

More importantly, they're LA +0 outsiders, which is fairly rare.

Meant any outsider, really. No LA +0 requirement was given. And neraphs do look like oversized toads.

People keep saying that like it's a bad thing. I just don't understand.
