View Full Version : Why did V not do this?

While I recall the giant talking about the characters not having time to think about all their actions... Why couldnt V use prestidigitation on Haily's green boots to make them match her outfit?

I haven't researched this yet as I am busy atm but I think you guys will want to do all the fun stuff anyway

Any actual change to an object (beyond just moving, cleaning, or soiling it) persists only 1 hour. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/prestidigitation.htm)

A better question would be why Haley didn't think of having them dyed nonmagically (...it really isn't necessary to use magic for everything, even when magic exists...) years ago.

Prestidigitation only lasts an hour. Vaarsuvius could recast it every hour, but there are far better uses for that many spell slots.

Several reasons. Here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

1. The most important is that it wouldn't be funny.

2. Any change to an object beyond moving, cleaning, and soiling it only lasts for an hour

She dyed them. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0675.html)

...yes, I'm aware of that. And you quoted the words "years ago" in my post, so I don't know why you're responding as though I'd said "I wonder why Haley doesn't dye the Totally Powerful Boots of Speed if she hates them being lime green so much."

Maybe magical boots can't be permanently dyed without magic? Or maybe because it was just intended to be a throwaway joke and the fact that it got a callback at all was a better use of the concept than getting them dyed in the first place?

Huh, I didn't even realize she kept them. She spoke of them in the past tense.

Maybe she didn't have the time/space to pack them when she first ditched the Thieves' Guild, but then was able to get them back when the Guild was "helping" her retrieve Roy's skeleton. Though that still doesn't answer why she didn't get them dyed while still a member of the Guild.

One of those many, many things that people are "going to do tomorrow, or the next day -- as soon as I finish X, Y, and Z" -- and "tomorrow" ends up being 10 years later.

It's on the FAQs (http://www.giantitp.com/FAQ.html#faq7)

Also, the question #9

The nonmagical way should be pretty cheap, too (especially for a level 10+ adventurer). I suppose Haley could be so miserly with her coin that she considers any non-zero cost to be too much... and this was the first time someone offered to dye them for free? (That's the only thing I can think of, anyway.)

I suppose that she could have asked V to prestidigitate them dirty over and over again until all the lime green was covered by filth. Though if that even worked (would it stack with itself?) that would probably turn out too gross to wear.

This.

Several times over.
