For my next campaign, part of it is going to involve travelling to the area in the campaign world equivalent to Aztec/Inca/Mayan America. Unfortunately, this comes with a corresponding lack of the "Dragon" part of Dungeons and Dragons - a terrible travesty if there ever was one.

As such, I've done a bit of homebrewing and turned the couatl from the monster manual into something much more draconic.

This serpentine dragon is covered in scales that glisten with a lustrous, rainbow sheen in the sunlight. It's huge wings are covered in similarly patterned feathers. It's narrow head holds vividly colored eyes and fangs longer than your arm that drip with a thick venom. Despite its obvious power, you feel nevertheless safe in its presence.

Couatl dragons are the native dragons to the deepest and most remote jungles, rarely seen by most civilised races. Despite this, they not as reclusive as other dragon species, and many of the older couatl dragons commonly dwell amongst tribes of jungle-dwelling humanoids peacefully.

Those dragons that do dwell amongst humans often dwell at the summit of impressive pyramids, and are attended by numerous half-dragon servants. The more isolated ones tend to dwell in caves under waterfalls - they find the rainbows cast by the mist beautiful. Couatl dragons pride themselves on their knowledge of the jungle around them; even the most introverted specimens will be aware of the presence of a travelling party within hours of them entering its territory.

Despite their peacable nature, couatl dragons are angered quickly by the presence of obviously evil beings such as evil outsiders, undead, aberrations and similar. Similarly, those who harm the jungle excessively find themselves treated equally. The normal response is for the couatl dragon to observe such trespassers until a reasonable picture of their capabilities emerges, when they will spring a deadly ambush. If they seem outmatched, a couatl dragon will gather allies before attacking - it is not unknown for such a call to arms to be answered by wandering couatl dragons far older than the caller.

Special abilities:

Breath Weapon (Su):

A couatl dragon has two breath weapons to choose from, though only one is available to individuals below the Young Adult stage. The first is a cone of rainbow colors that causes targets to be stunned for 1d4 rounds + 1 per age category of the dragon (Fort negates). The second is a cone of prismatic rays. Whenever a target is hit by the breath weapon, roll on the following table to determine the effects (All DCs are equal to the dragon's breath attack DC).

{table=head]Result|Color|Effect

1|
Red| Deals fire damage equal to the breath's damage (Reflex half)

2|
Green| Deals acid damage equal to the breath's damage (Reflex half)

3|
Blue| Deals electricity damage equal to the breath's damage (Reflex half)

4|
Yellow|The target is afflicted by the dragon's poison (Fort negates)

5|
Orange|The target is paralyzed for 1d4 + 1 per age category of the dragon. (Fort negates)

6|
Indigo|The target is confused as the confusion spell for 1d4 + 1 rounds per age category of the dragon. (Will negates)

7|
Violet|The target has the highest level spell effect present on them dispelled as uf by Greater Dispel Magic. (Will negates)

8|
Two Colors|Roll Twice; Ignore any 8 Results
Certain effects are only available to dragons older than certain ages; if an effect which a dragon does not have access to is rolled, re-roll the result.

Serpent Bite (Ex):

A couatl dragon's bite is more powerful than normal dragons, and gains 1.5 times the couatl dragon's strength bonus on damage and attack rolls. The serpentine nature, and corresponding lack of limbs, of the couatl dragon means it cannot make any claw attacks.

A couatl dragon is also venomous. A target taking damage from the couatl dragon's bite attack is injected with the couatl dragon's poison. This is a poison that deals 1d4 Str/1d4 Str with a save DC equal to the couatl dragon's breath.

At the Young age category the damage improves to 1d6 Str/1d6 Str, at the Young Adult stage to 2d4 Str/2d4 Str, at the Mature Adult stage to 2d6 Str/2d6 Str, at the Very Old stage to 4d4 Str/4d4 Str and again at the Wyrm stage to 4d6 Str/4d6 Str.

Telepathy (Su):

A couatl dragon can communicate with any creature within 90ft that has an intelligence score. The creature can respond to the couatl dragon if it wishes, and no common language is needed.

Constrict (Ex):

On a successful grapple check, a couatl dragon automatically deals damage in addition to any other attacks it makes depending on its size, plus two times its strength modifier:

{table]Size|Damage
Tiny| 2d3
Small| 2d4
Medium| 2d6
Large| 2d8
Huge| 4d6
Gargantuan| 4d8
Improved Grab (Ex):

If a couatl dragon hits a creature more than two sizes smaller than itself with a bite attack, it deals normal damage and may attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. Each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals slain attack damage, in addition to constriction damage.

Prismatic Breath (Su):

A Young Adult or older dragon is able to use the Prismatic Breath attack. Initially, it is only able to generate the most simple of colors (red, green and blue) but as a couatl dragon ages, it becomes more adept are controlling the colors in its breath attacks and the effects they produce. At Adult, it is able to use the Yellow effect of its breath, at Old, the Orange, at Ancient, the Indigo, and at Great Wyrm the Violet colors.

Spell-like Abilities

At will: Detect Thoughts, 3/day: Entropic Shield, 1/day: Glitterdust, Invisibility, Prismatic Sphere
