Unhallow
Evocation [Evil]
Level: Clr 5, Drd 5
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 24 hours
Range: Touch
Area: 40-ft. radius emanating from the touched point
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: See text
Unhallow makes a particular site, building, or structure an unholy site. This has three major effects.

First, the site or structure is guarded by a magic circle against good effect.

Second, all turning checks made to turn undead take a -4 penalty, and turning checks to rebuke undead gain a +4 profane bonus. Spell resistance does not apply to this effect. (This provision does not apply to the druid version of the spell.)

Finally, you may choose to fix a single spell effect to the unhallowed site. The spell effect lasts for one year and functions throughout the entire site, regardless of its normal duration and area or effect. You may designate whether the effect applies to all creatures, creatures that share your faith or alignment, or creatures that adhere to another faith or alignment. At the end of the year, the chosen effect lapses, but it can be renewed or replaced simply by casting unhallow again.

Spell effects that may be tied to an unhallowed site include aid, bane, bless, cause fear, darkness, daylight, death ward, deeper darkness, detect magic, detect good, dimensional anchor, discern lies, dispel magic, endure elements, freedom of movement, invisibility purge, protection from energy, remove fear, resist energy, silence, tongues, and zone of truth.

Saving throws and spell resistance might apply to these spells’ effects. (See the individual spell descriptions for details.)

An area can receive only one unhallow spell (and its associated spell effect) at a time.

Unhallow counters but does not dispel hallow.

Material Component
Herbs, oils, and incense worth at least 1,000 gp, plus 1,000 gp per level of the spell to be tied to the unhallowed area.

Can Planar Binding and Unhallow work in conjunction? And would I need to know the spell to be affixed to the site(and presumably cast it)?

Thank you in advance,

The effects may be attached; but it doesn't specify if I need to cast it, someone else can cast it, or I can just say specify this unhallow also does detect magic.

"Include" doesn't mean "these are all the spells you can use with this". It means "here's a list of suggestions". The actual dysfunction comes from the bit where "the spell effect lasts for one year and functions throughout the entire site, regardless of its normal duration and area or effect."

So the way an Unhallow with Planar Binding attached would work is that fiends who walk into the Unhallow zone are immediately targeted with a Planar Binding. The duration of service on the Binding is not part of its duration as a spell, and remains standard. Also, because of the way the range works, the calling diagram into which the creature is bound must be drawn very close to the area of the Unhallow. Since the diagram only lasts a day per caster level, you still need someone there to constantly renew it.

Basically, this is not a great use of either spell.

Okay, that helps me understand a little bit better, I missed the word 'include'.

What I'm intending is unhallow a building with zone of truth, or detect lies or crushing despair or bestow curse. Something to make the actual binding easier. From there use the magic circle as per normal, and bind per normal.

I'm unsure if the first function (magic circle against good) would even function as the inward trap version of the spell.

I personally read it as "these are the spells you can use with this." For me the word "may" implies that some spells can be used and others can't, and the ones that "may" be used are listed there. But perhaps I'm being too literal.

:) I'm fully expecting my DM to be strict(and trying to limit it's power), so I'm trying to understand what unhallow does and does not do.

My character's stick is planar binding so I'm trying to see how it works with this as well.

If there's flexabilty with the spell selection(the secondary rider effect) then I may try to pair it with Geas and see how that would go. I'm honestly not expecting that to work, but might as well explore while we can. :)
