Class: Sorcerer
Race: Human
Starting Lvl: 1
Non-Negotiable feat- Spell Thematics

so im gonna play a necromancer, i have no illusions about walking around with an undead army (id play a Dread Necro if i wanted that) i just wanna have a "Dark Mage" feel. I plan on taking Bonefiddle and other spells like Clutch of Orcus (fyi i can research spells as this will be part of a mage guild campaign so i can probably grab stuff from other lists)

so looking for suggestions on feats and spells and probably Prestige classes

The PrC Pale master is the way to do arcane necro.

mother cyst (libris mortis) and necromantic bloodline (dragon magazine compendium) both will add several spells to your spells known, giving you more options, both are necromantic themed so there is that.

Still I would probably go dread necro, even if I am not minion mancing.

well i contemplated playing a dread necro, but theres so many fun attack spells i would miss, like Evard's black tentacles, i would miss the Evocation school (i know theres better ways but its classic) and other weird shenanigans the sorcerer list gives me

Seriously, playing dread necromancer is better. He even does have Evard's black tentacles of forceful intrusion.
But if you are absolutely focused on playing sorcerer, look up to pale master and the crypt lord.

If you are not going to trade your familiar for metamagic specialist, perhaps you could convince a DM to let you trade it for the variant necromancer's (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#necromancerVariants) skeletal minion.

As long as you're on the DM's good side, see if you can figure out a reasonable update together for the AD&D spell skull trap. I suppose you could use spell thematics with a delayed blast fireball, but it just isn't the same.

What you want to realize is that you are going to be a different necromancer than a cleric. You need a good solid trick that will work in almost any situation.

Thus you need to be an uttercold assault necromancer. Then you can fire cold / negative energy into your crowd mid HD skeletons / zombie dragons. It heals them and hurts most everything else.

Targeted enervation works to weaken big things so your skeletons can tear them apart, and battlefield control like tentacles and stinking cloud can keep combat in your favor.

If you don't want the undead so much as the Dark Arts feel, there's always the option of going into Incantatrix, grabbing Maximize/Twin/Split Ray/Practical Metamagic/Arcane Thesis, and shooting Enervations at people.
