What about ABBA? I thought that's what everyone was thinking about when they hear Sweden?

Gaming-wise I think about Drakar och Demoner. That's Sweden for you!

the Hives and Amon Amarth off the top of my head.

Neneh Cherry, Ace of Base, Robyn, Lykke Li, Peter Bjorn and John, and Fever Ray are also notable, looking at the wiki page. Not a fan of metal generally so not gonna comment on that.

HOW CAN I FORGET REFUSED! Only one of the bands listed I've seen live, and they BLOW my MIND

Trees
More trees
Even more trees
Elk
Lakes
Blue and yellow post boxes
Soviet style architecture (Gothenburg)
Recalcitrant ATMs (I think they've fixed these now)

I drove down the west coast with some friends quite a few years ago. We ran out of money because none of the ATMs would take our cards.

I definitely ought to have known at least half of those, and you've left off a bunch of metal bands (which you acknowledged yourself).
You're slipping, Amidus. :smalltongue:

so.. I went to Lapland earlier this year.. and had what they called a finnish sauna.

I always thought that that was a swedish sauna..or that's what I called it before going to Lapland, anyway.

so.. which is true? is it something they both do? is there a consensus as to who invented it? are there differences between the two traditions?

as for my list.. I think I answered to the old thread too, but can't be bothered to look it up..so..

ikea adverts and ikea in general,
Abba,
Swedish Chef,
swedish girls (and their capacity for holding their liquor)
snow and trees.. and loghouses
Winter Olympics,
Astrid Lindgren, (Ronia Rovardottar must be one of my first "true" fantasy books I've read, and also the last book that was read to me as a kid)
Ingmar Bergman

Yes, these are all great reasons to come on holiday to Sweden! Except if you're looking for ø you might be disappointed as we are more into ö. Also we have an island called Öland which is basically the island of Islandland. Great fun!

Yes. Yes, we do.

We also have a lot of cities and towns with really funny names (especially if you translate them literally).
Like for instance:

Härnösand - Here Sneezed Duck
Örnsköldsvik - Eagle Shield's Bay
Trosa - Underpant
Visby - Wise village
Växjö - Grow lake
Sundbyberg - Healthy village-mountain
Varberg - Puss Mountain or Was Mountain or Where mountain

Sauna originates from Finland. Therefore, not Swedish. =P

Well, all the friends I have that do skiing or their parents do, there's not one that hasn't been to Åre. Everyone's always talking about how they went to Åre during winter break. Åre this Åre that... :smalltongue:

... But yeah. Probably wrong circles. =P

The word is Finnish. The steam-house has been in use among Germanic and Slavic tribes for millennia.

KuReshtin - don't forget Mensträsk (menstruation swamp) and Kräkångersnoret (vomit regret snot).

The ø is Norwegian, we Swedes never use it.:smalltongue:

A fact which I am sure the Pythons were well aware of, but chose to use it because people are more familiar with it than ö, and no one can tell the difference between us anyway.

I do know that the concept of a steam room is worldwide, but the sauna most people refer to and is used today is the Finnish sauna.

This debate could go on forever, but hey, let's agree it's a Finn thing... :smallwink: :smalltongue:

... And to this whole sauna debate, I should point out that we don't even use the word "sauna" in Sweden. We call it "bastu" instead.

KuReshtin

Also, I believe that the Sauna is not to be considered as a steam room, since it doesn't use require any steam to function. Yes, you use water to douse the hot rocks to cause steam, but that is more to keep the air at least a little bit humidified, but the humidity in a sauna is relatively low, whereas a steam room has a very high humidity.

Also, people usually don't beat themselves with birch branches in a steam room. :smallwink:
