View Full Version : Decent +LA races for Wizards?

I'm just wondering, if in regards to race I wanted to play something a bit more unique, whether there are decent options out there.

I understand that anything +LA is generally bad for caster classes, but are there actual good races that work for a wizard that might make +LA worthwhile?

Doesn't Primordial + Half-Giant get +4 Int for only +1 LA? That's at least not the worst thing you can do.

Or find a monster with racial Wizard casting.

Off-hand I don't recall any others, though.

There is a +1/+2 LA guide, and a guide to playable creatures w/ racial hit dice in my sig.

I'd check those out for int and con bonuses.

Edit: See if your DM would let you use the pathfinder Blue Goblin (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/races/blue) as LA+1 (or as LA+0 as per pathfinder if he/she is feeling generous!). The 3.5 one (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/monsters/blue.htm) is IMHO criminally over LA'd.

Other possibilities that jump out at me are:
1) Air Genasi
2) Fire Hobgoblin
3) Sharakim
4) Tiefling
5) Wispling

LA+2 for Phrenic with Magic in the Blood feat, doubly so in a Psionics is different setting.

Black Ethergaunt (casts as a 17th level wizard at ECL 20) could be fun if you can find a savage progression for it.

Yeah...unless the OP is thinking Savage Progressions or the game starts at VERY high level 16 RHD + 4 LA = ECL +20...

It's homebrew, but there is one from this old thread on BG (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=7733.msg255597#msg255597).

Indeed, I read right over that.

Alter Self outsider shenanigans can also be perpetrated by Neraphim wizards, and they're +0 LA. Of course, you have/get to be a frog monster.

On the plus side, against foes with poor knowledge and a bit of bluff, a Neraph can pass himself off as a Slaad.

Polymorph gets better use out of Outsider, but Aberration gets plenty of use out of Alter Self, especially with Metamorphic Transfer.

There aren't any +LA races that compensate for the casting loss from a sheer stats perspective. However, pixie MIGHT be close simply because of the horribly abusive constant greater invisibility and amazing ability bonuses. A ray casting pixie wizard could be useful in certain situations, simply because you're almost guaranteed to hit with your ranged touch attacks.
