Chapter 0:The Test


The basic training was grueling, but you made it through and now you are a proud cadet of Asiria Academy, one of the most famous academies of all Seldaria. At least that is what you tell yourself. The truth is you are on the lowest position in the command chain, and you don't really mater. But, you do have potential. Maybe.

You have been assigned to the squad 64272-CH2. As you enter the room you see five more cadets. You think you have seen them all in the training area, but you are not sure. Last few weeks have been so tiring and confusing, you can barely remember your name.

As you look around the room you see three more people, a Viera, Gria and a Hume. They seam to be ignoring you all completely, so you think it's better not to disturb them. Maybe you should introduce yourself to your fellow squad members.

A male Mithra dressed in black wizard's robes stands just outside of the room, glancing around with his icy blue eyes. His tail swishes to and fro as he runs a hand through his cropped black hair before turning to the side. "No, Mai, you need to stand outside. You might terrify my new minions." He turns back around with an easy-going smile and steps inside the room, from the Mithra Skeleton in plate armor standing outside.

Rayana had been sitting for a while and was anxiously waiting for things to proceed. After a moment she sighed deeply and got up. What's the point of making us wait? This is just another group exercise... She looked at the Mithra in dark robes that was in the doorway, seemingly speaking to someone she couldn't see.

Rayana decided to get closer and talk to the figure. "Hey, any idea when we're starting? This is a group exercise isn't it?" she said brazenly as she usually did.

[Viladin454]

Vildenkainen gives you the young woman a frank appraisal, his smile widening. "Not quite sure. I am hoping soon." He pauses for a moment. "Wait. Is it not the custom to give one's own name first? Fine, then. Mine I shall give! I am Vildenkainen, I am the undefeated necromancer of this academy; A rising new star in the world of magic! The sound of my voice strikes fear into the hearts of my enemies. My peers call me the Blue Thunder of Asiria Academy!" He strikes a pose, expecting people to be in awe of him.

[Raybras]

That was it, Rayana couldn't hold it in anymore... *snicker* *Snort* she burst out laughing "fffWAHAHAHAHAHAHA" it was so ridiculous she could barely breath for 10 seconds. After trying to recompose herself, she tried to introduce herself. "hehe I'm sorry.. that was..." *giggle* *coughcough* finally getting control over herself she continued *clears throat* "That was rude of me. I'm Rayana, Combat specialist. I've beaten about 90% of the Cadets at our academy in Combat this past year." pausing slightly to gather her thoughts, trying not to think about the ridiculous pose Vildenkainen did.

"So, a necromancer huh? We don't see many around here."

[Ravanan]

A female mithra, of average height for the race, sways gently in the corner, humming to herself. The blondness of her hair is startling, even for her kind, and occasionally starts softly vocalizing her tuneless song.

At the outburst from Rayana, she jumps a little. After listening to Rayana's introduction, Anre chimes in. "Hmmm...I'm Anre. I'm a red mage, though I'm a bit more for the mage part of that. I may not be quite so fancy as you both, but I'm apparently good enough to get this far. What kind of pain are they going to inflict upon us here I wonder?"

Really necromancer? Denying the red mage her red text? Especially when your assumed nickname is BLUE Thunder? For shaaaaaame. *pouts*

"None greater than I will if you all don't let me get some more sleep" said a disgruntal Kel Dusbrok as he streched his arms. He had been sleeping till the necromancer..... whatever his name inturrupted his nap. "The last thing you need to worry about is them. We've all grauduated I expect and know they are assigning us our frist job"

An older dragoon sits leaning back in his chair, his arms crossed. His lance is propped up against a nearby wall. He observes each cadet, quietly grumbling to himself. Anyone listening closely might hear "...damn kids..." and "...go through this crap all over again..."

Vildenkainen narrows his eyes dangerously at the laughing female and was about to do something about it when the other Mithra piped up. His smile came back naturally, giving the other Mithra a frank appraisal as well. His eyes cut across to the sleepy mage. "Sleep is for the dead, as I heard."

[Nihilarian]

A red furred beast, laying on the ground, twitches it's tail almost violently, flames streaming behind it. A small smile plays across his lips. Probably a smile, anyway. "On a good day, we face this trial. Whom among us shall succeed? It will be interesting to find out."

"And bragging is for fools as they join the dead" He said glancing at Vildenkainen. Turning to the furred creature "Interesting to find out, Its me and my magic of course." he said as he stood up tapping his foot.

[Viladin454]

Vildenkainen's smile takes a bit of a smirk as he listened to the black mage pontificate. "Indeed they do, sir. Indeed they do."

Looking back over he slowly grined as the hat hid his as as he said "Want to see?"

[Raybras]

Listening in on the exchange between both magic users, Rayana felt she was left out. When the Hume caster evoked a challenge, she butted in. "See what? See you brag? i doubt that will accomplish anything." she said with a smirk in her face. Without a doubt she was certain to grab the attention.

Laughing now he said "Its only bragging if it is not true."

[Raybras]

giving a quick look-over of the female Mithra, known as Anre, Rayana felt she would find her time with this squad quite entertaining. "Well met Anre. Never hurts to have some fun around here. Hope we get along. she said as she offered a hand and a smile.

looking at the bugan and the hume mage, Rayana went and asked "Might we get a name of you? we've already named ourselves" she said as she directed a hand at herself and Vildenkainen.

then she turned to the older man who was left out. "Maybe you wouldn't feel so old if you had more fun?" smirking at her own remark. that should rile him up a bit she thought.

"Kel Dusbrok" still chuckling he said "and .... ?"

[Ravanan]

"Ummm...I know we're all really good and all to make it here, but..."

The catgirl pauses a moment.

"Are you all so insecure in your endowments that you must posture so?"

Now rolling on the floor laughing, Kel looks over at the rest of the group wondering why no one else thought it was funny.

At the snide remark from the fighter girl, Willem smirks then closes his eyes and pretends to sleep.

Vildenkainen merely kept his smirk intact at the catgirl's comment. He turns towards the doorway and yells out, "Mai, get in here. Why are you waiting out there?" A plate armored Mithra skeleton walks into the room, on her back is a knight sword and a large steel shield.

[Philemonite]

The three instructors stopped their chatting and turned towards the cadets.
"Can you leave your discussion for later? Our time is precious, and we do not like to waste it." the Hume said.
"Delorian is right, we should really get this over with." The Viera added.
"I am Mylena, and this are Delorian and Alana." She said pointing to the Hume and Gria.
"We will be your instructors. Your first mission will be your final test. We will test your combat abilities. We will begin shortly, but first we will answer some of your question."
She smiled, as if she was saying that you can ask whatever you want, but you won't get many answers.

[Ravanan]

The catgirl ponders for a moment before responding.

"Well, obviously you're gonna tell us about the mission after we ask any questions, and so it's kind of pointless to ask questions about it until then, so...do you prefer strawberry or melon?"

She smiles without a hint of mischief.

[Nihilarian]

Hototo snorts and stands up. "Will this test be dangerous?"

[Lemunde]

"It damn well better be!" Willem says in response to Hototo's question. "I joined this group to get some action. All these petty little exams we've been taking are well beneath the likes of me. Let's get this show on the road already!"

[Philemonite]

"Melon, of course." Mylena answered, as if it was a perfectly normal question.
"More dangerous then a ordinary sparing, but not as dangerous as a real battle. Still, you should not expect the other side to be forgiving."
"You will get plenty of action soon, but it would be shame if you were not ready and we send you out to die." Delorian said with a sarcastic tone.

[Lemunde]

"Hmph. I've seen plenty of battles already. Probably more than any of you combined. I...may have gotten a little rusty." Willem glances back at his lance and rubs his shoulder. "But I can still take on whatever you can throw at me."

[Raybras]

"Well then old man, maybe you should let us young ones do the strenuous work while you get those kinks out" retorted Rayana with a wink and a laugh. Turning to the instructors, she deliberately put on an air of confidence. "I have trained to be ready at any time. I'm ready to go now."

[Nihilarian]

Hototo sighs. "I'm assuming we are not to kill our opponents?" he asks.

[Philemonite]

Delorian turned his gaze towards Willem."Your ignorance is very amusing old man." he said with a smile. "You really think you can beat a Subolet?"
Mylena gave him a stern look as if she was trying to tell him that was a bad idea.
"It is just a sparing" she answered Hototo's question. "It would be very good if you were not to hurt your opponents too much. I will be there with you, just in case you are having any trouble."

[Raybras]

"So Group Sparring. We've done it before, what's different about it this time?" asked Rayana with mild interest.

[Scholar23]

Chuckling "Well then shall we get started then, I think me and gramps here should have a go at it .... seeing as I'm a little bored and gramps here seems anxious to start and all"

[Ravanan]

Anre tail sways as she looks curiously at the instructors.

"Not to be rude, but can we please have the full details of the mission already? Or are we required to get the details one question at a time?"

[Philemonite]

Mylena looked at the cadets with a strange smile. She loved this part.
"The main difference is that your performance here will determine your future in this academy. If you don't do so well you will be held back. And if you do really bad you will be kicked out."
Delorian's expression changed dramatically, and if you haven't heard what he said to Willem, you might have been fooled into thinking he is actually a nice person. "What Mylena is trying to say is we need you to do your best. We haven't kicked out anyone in a very long time, so worst thing that can happen is that you get sent to a few more classes."
Mylena frowned a bit, she really wanted to scare this cadets.
"Follow us to the training room, if there are no more questions."

[Raybras]

Rayana was so excited she almost forgot to salute before following the instructors. One last question popped into her head just before leaving the room. "Who will we be sparring against?"

[Lemunde]

Willem hefts his lance and prepares to follow the instructors to the training room. When Rayana asks her question Willem says "Don't answer that! It will ruin the surprise!"

[Raybras]

Rayana turned when the lance wielding geezer had outburst. With a grin she thought heh, guess i'll get along with him better then i thought. and gave the man a curt nod of approval. "You know what? he's right. don't answer that."

[Viladin454]

"Well, about time. Come, Mai, stop making so much noise." Vildenkainen follows the rest of the students as Mai follows behind dutifully.

[Nihilarian]

Hototo sighs once more, and pads out the room as well.

[Philemonite]

As you enter the training room you start to feel the tension. Mylena's words still echo in your mind. Sure, you won't be kicked out, but you really don't want to go back to classes. You don't want to waste your time inside the academy walls, when there is so mush that can be done outside. The first thing you notice is six Humes on the other side of the room, and you guess that those are your opponents. With their weapons drawn they are waiting for the instructors to give the order.

"This is a simple combat exercise. Do not hurt your opponents too much, and remember you will be judged not only on your effectiveness, but also your style."

[Ravanan]

Anre unshoulders her bow, but does not yet draw an arrow.

With a quick yawn, she looks expectantly at the instructors.

It might be a liiiittle early, but I'll go ahead and roll initiative.

What do they each look like, e.g. any distinguishing class looks? I'm taking down those mages ASAP.

[Raybras]

Rayana held her scythe promptly in her two hands, eager to start. She looked at the rabble on the other side of the room. She looked at their posture and thought they would be easy prey. Looking at her own group, she said "well, they don't look so tough. Anyone have a favored target? I'd like to go toe to toe with that one in the armor" she pointed with her thumb at the fighter.

[Lemunde]

"Well if I've learned anything from previous battles it's that people with healing powers can be a real pain in the ass. Fighters are a lot harder to take down when some white mage is behind them chanting their mumbo jumbo. If there are any of those here I recommend taking them out first." Willem scans the other group looking for anyone who might be a white or a red mage.

[Ravanan]

Willem dashes in and targets the Red Mage, swinging his lance in an attempt to bust him in the head with the shaft.


OOC: I can already tell there's going to be all sorts of innuendo with this character.

"Dadferginderglers...!" Willem shouts as he misses his attack, but then follows up with a second swing!

Vildenkainen, with a decidedly bored look on his face, steps around Mai (1 square SW, 1 square W) and gestures with his staff at the Thief as a black bolt fires from the tip of it.

Mai will charge the thief, swinging with her knightsword.

Seeing the red mage clumsily try to swing at him, Willem pokes the butt end of his lance at the red mage's chest.

Smiling as the Red Mage has moved easily within her range, Anre moves 5 ft North. Knowing exactly the spell to target him with, she begins her invocation.

"Strip away the ground with glistening blades! Thunder!"

He's down. My minimum damage is in the high teens since he is weak to lightning thanks to his water affinity.

Black Mage moves one square north and casts Fire on Willem.

Seeing the battle unfold before her, Rayana finally reacts to the situation by flourishing her scythe and charging the Fighter, puttting some extra power behind her blow.


EDIT: it should actually be +8, since i forgot charge was +2 and not +1. also, -2 AC until next turn.

Hototo sits on his haunches and howls. All the players that can hear this gain a +1 bonus to Attack, Damage and saves vs. fear effects.

He also activates his minor aura, Motivate Dexterity, though it won't help much in this battle. Everyone within 60 ft. gains a +4 bonus to all Dexterity checks, including initiative (but we've already rolled and don't gain this benefit until the next time we roll)

White Mage

White Mage moves one square east and cast protect on the Fighter.

Mai makes an attack of opportunity for the silly white mage to cast a spell within melee range of her. [EDIT] Assuming it hits, the white mage needs to make a Concentration check DC 15 (10, +4 from damage, +1 from spell) or the spell is interrupted. I assume the white mage was casting Protect on the Monk and not the Fighter (because he's down).

Hit or miss, Mai continues the attack upon the white mage. If the white mage does go down from the AoO, then the attack will switch to the monk.

She gathers her energy again, this time with more force, and projects it at Willem.

"You have done well cadets, I am impressed. Some of you need a bit more practice, but that should not be a problem." Mylena says as she looks at Willem.
"Unfortunately, we are having some reorganizing, so you will be transfered to other squads."

OOC:I'm waiting for you to pick where to go, first come first serve.

[Raybras]

"Well it's natural that i perform well, i've been training most of my life." she bragged. The fighter went down in a single hit, Rayana was hoping for a better fight. "Well, it doesn't mean much when our opponents weren't on par skill as us."

OOC: i'd like to head into squad 1 if possible

[Philemonite]

"We had a few cadets quit in the middle of the mission. So, Anre, Vildenkainen and Willem, you will come with me to join squad 64272-CH3. They have been dispatched to the Highland few hours ago, if we hurry we can catch up to them. we leave in half hour."

"Hototo, you will come with me to the desert. A squad has been dispatched there to deal with some bandits. We will assist them. There is a small town near the Sandius border, Dastor. Squad 64272-CH1 is there dealing with some troubles. Rayana, you will go there and assist them."
