View Full Version : Half-Fiends/Celestials. Why just the two templates?

Why aren't there more variants to the half-fiend and half-celestial? I feel there ought to be more. There are so many fiends and celestial beings that they could have expanded upon it quite a bit.

Are there any templates I've overlooked or something? A homebrew, perhaps?

There an excellent article on the wizards website called (Half)-Fiendish Variety (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20060630a). It makes the half-fiend template a lot more customizable and could easily be adapted to half-celestials as well.

There's also a template called half-farspawn which is basically half-fiend with a more far-realmy flavor.

While not templates, various planetouched expand the range somewhat.

Cambions (Expedition to the Demonweb Pits) are like "3/4 fiends"- with the base being human.

Unholy Scions (in this case it is a template: Heroes of Horror) are like half-fiends- but with the evil dialed up, but the fiendish appearance dialed down- they look virtually indistinguishable from normal beings.

Thank you for the link  I'm diggin' your avatar.
Where would I be able to find this half-farspawn?

Planetouched would be like the Aasimar right?
From what you've just said about the Unholy Scions, they could be used as spies for whole-blooded fiends. This interests me...
Thank you

Where would I be able to find this half-farspawn?

In the Lords of Madness book.

Notable fiend planetouched besides the basic tiefling and aasimar- Fey'ri (fiend-blooded elves) and tanar'ruk (fiend-blooded orcs). Dragon Magazine has a few others- as well as some celestial planetouched.

Planar Handbook has gnome celestial planetouched (other half was celestial badger).

Pathfinder has a whole set of variant heritages for Aasimar (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-aasimar) and Tieflings (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-tiefling). Keep in mind that base races were buffed in Pathfinder, so these are probably LA +1 in 3.5.

I'm rather glad that Wizards didn't spend too much time on rules for a template with an inconveniently high level adjustment for PC.

There's actually a planetouched handbook (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=6992.0)over on BG. I believe it lists all the planetouched races.

Thanks, I'll look through the book now

Hey, I know of the tanar'ruk! The half that isn't orc is Vrock I believe.
Draegloth's another, Drow/Glabrezu right?
I really need to get some Dragon Magazines.
How the gnome and celestial badger did that, I don't want to know :smalleek:

I'll keep the LA thing in mind. Thanks for linking

They go a bit overboard with a lot of their LAs, so I reduce them as needed.

Aren't those the same as the half-fiend and half-celestial? If not, I fear I've skipped over them on numerous occasions when flipping through the book.

No sir, half-fiends/celestials are creatures who are the product of an outsider mating with a mortal, while fiendish/celestial creatures are normal creatures who happen to live on the respective lower/upper plane.

Ah, okay. Thank you for the clarification
I'm gonna look them both up now.

I believe there are axiomatic and anarchic templates too. And a half-elemental template.

As for planetouched...
Fey'ri (elf-demons?)
Genasi (human-elementals)

And some non-canon from Dragon.

Pathfinder did some really nice things with customizable Aasimar and Tieflings.

I've heard of the half-elemental, but not the axiomatic or anarchic templates.

I REALLY need to get my hands on some Dragon Magazines!

There's the half devil/half duergar Durzagon (MM2 p.124).

I wasn't aware that was a half-breed, I never had time to read through it, so I just assumed it was a sub-species of some sort
Thank you informing me of this
