Encounter One

Several days ago, a travelling merchant and his family were waylaid by bandits on a country road. He, being an intelligent man, did not resist, and thus he and his family survived the ordeal... but his wife's necklace was taken. The rest of the losses are annoying, but that necklace was passed down to his wife by her late mother, and has significant sentimental value. So he has employed you to recover it. Teaching the thugs responsible a lesson would be appreciated, but is not compulsory.

You have since discovered the likely location of the bandits camp, in a small woodland clearing within easy travelling distance of the major road. The merchant believes there to be about a dozen of them in total, but cautions you that perhaps not all of the bandits were present at his robbing, so he cannot be sure.

How do you want to go about this?
