The DM has been talking about a solo campaign, pirates of the carribbean style, which will be real pick up and go whenever we feel like it. From what I've been told about it, my character will be a pirate captain and I'll have to recruit a crew. It sounds like the DM will control 1-2 characters at a time- whichever member/s of the crew I want to bring with me for stuff.

I cannot decide on a good, fun class though, or how to play a pirate character. I want suggestions on this, I'm not too bothered about optimization, just something that would be a lot of fun to play and work well as a pirate.

A Pirate King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7SVMVrick), eh?

The Dread Pirate PrC from Song and Silence springs to mind, as does the Thief-Acrobat (if you really want to go Wesley/Errol Flynn)
The Swashbuckler class from Complete Warrior.

If you want a bit dirtier, go bard or rogue. Pathfinder has some nice bard variants for the pirate

What sort of pirate captain will you be playing?

You can go for a Rogue/Fighter style buccaneer, a Bard-type, a gunslinging-spellslinging spellcaster, or any one of several options. I, for example, am currently in a Skull and Shackles game where my character involves a mix of Monk and Ninja to approximate the One Piece anime to a certain extent. Yes, I'm going to be king of the pirates!

They were both updated in Complete Adventurer.

Sajiri, I suggest you check out the book Stormwrack. It has prcs such as the Legendary Captain (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050805a&page=3) and the Scarlet Corsair (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20050805b), as well as many pirate-related feats, items and whatnot.

The Legendary Leader prc from the Heroes of Battle book wouldn't be a bad option either (especially since both Legendary Leader and Legendary Captain revolve around the Leadership feat so they complement eachother).

Edit: I don't know much about Pathfinder but I did find this page (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/extras/pirates-arrr-us) which deserves a look.

Swashbuckler/Rogue with Daring Outlaw feat or Swordsage. If it's Pathfinder, there is Human-only Gunslinger archetype that turns class into Jack Sparrow.

There was a whole Iron Chef for this a while back. Somebody not on a smartphone should find and link it.

The Dungeon Lord prestige class from Dungeonscape could make an interesting pirate captain. Just declare that your ship is a "dungeon".

Gunslinger/spellcaster or bard sounds interesting. Not entirely sure what kind of pirate I want to play yet, but I'll check out some of the classes suggested.

Okay, I knew there was a pathfinder book that had pirate archetypes, but it only had them for fighter rogue bard and...barbarian? I think, I had not found these other archetypes before so this is really helpful!
