NEed DM Advice:

I want to be a halfing sized elf, and use my animal companion as a mount.

Is it against the rules to be born shorter of stature?

Elves are Medium sized, RAW/RAI. Ask your DM?. Otherwise, you would need either A: a Large Animal Companion, or B: some way to reduce your own size - Reduce Person, the Pathfinder CR-1 Young template, the Dungeonbred template, there may be others.

Small size might seem like a wash, but IMO reduced carrying capacity is easily worth +1 AC, +1 attacks. Talk to your GM and ask for a variant: reduce speed by 5 or 10 ft., maybe take a -2 to Str.

Also, some of the UA flaws etc. might do this.

Alternatively, get a larger animal companion.

Or get gnomes (or a subrace thereof) into the world as a type of elf (just change the subtype).

Randomly, did you know that according to D&D, adult humans can't ride ponies (Medium size)? Get down, lady, you're breaking the rules! OP! OP! Damn munchkin! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Horse_riding_in_coca_cola_arena_-_melbourne_show_2005.jpg)

Could always play a Tallfellow Halfling. Check the Monster Manual I, page 149.

Seriously. They (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Halfling)'re almost the exact same thing as a midget elf. :smallamused:

If you want to be the kind of Elf who works at Santa's factory (as opposed to LotR elves like Legolas), you'd probably be best off playing a Gnome or Halfling, and just calling the race "Toyshop Elf" or something.

D&D elves are actually pretty dang short, compared to how Tolkien elves are generally depicted. I think the average height has gone up over time, but in AD&D 1E, male elves are 5' even, female elves 4'6", in AD&D 2E it's 5' ½" and 4'5½"... even 3.X elves average 5' (both genders).

Also, maybe he's thinking of one of these (http://www.elfquest.com/gallery/OnlineComics/OQ/OQ01/oq01-0.jpg) classic elves (now 35 years old) who ride medium-sized animal companions...
