Hey there everybody!

I have been lurking around here for quite some time, using these threads to help me when I have been stuck in a bind or needed a piece of information I couldn't find elsewhere. Tomorrow marks a rather nice moment in my time as a participant in D&D, as I will finally be DM'ing my first session.

It's not a very long campaign, I designed it to be a short one session situation, mostly because after this week college is breaking and I didn't want to start something and have to wait a few months for it to continue. I have almost all the components for this session assembled, and my only remaining problem is my final encounter.

The basic plot for the session is that a wizard has kidnapped the two descendants of an extremely powerful magic-user who is slowly dying. The reason he has kidnapped these descendants is because when the magic-user dies the power he has garnered over the centuries will flow into these two people. The wizard has managed to discover a way of diverting the flow to himself, and you have to stop him before the old man dies and his power leaves.

My one situation is that I have been trying to determine the best kind of final encounter for my group to have with the wizard. The people that will be participating have a tendency to break their characters, so I want to be able to give them a challenge. However, they're only going to be level five so I don't want to disintegrate them on the first turn.

What I was hoping was that you motley crew could help me come up with a wizard for them to fight, with possibly some side creatures to aid him. If you could help me with that, that would be amazing.

Has the party been made yet? Knowing the make-up will help determine what would be an effective build.

Anywho, using the Conjurer (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/specialistWizardVariants.htm#spontaneousDispelling ) variant listed here is quite decent. Having access to a bevy of summoned monsters and the various BFC that is granted from Conjuration can make a rather effective enemy for the party to face. It can be really funny if you also mix in some Illusions so the party is wasting their attacks on something that isn't there. You could go straight Conjurer and do quite fine, though I suppose you could sneak in Mage of the Arcane Order for more contingency spells. Alternatively you could take Spell Mastery+Uncanny Forethought to always have the right spell ready.

Well remember at that point it seems the big bad's strategy is just not to lose. All he has to do is keep one of the bodies alive, and then he can channel the magic essence into himself and go all "One Winged Angel" on them.

So I am seeing BFCs, walls, enhanced mobility kinda evil.

Try using the Abrupt Jaunt ACF for a few "NO" buttons to full attacks.

Wall of smoke to screw LOS and nauseate low Fort enemies.

Sculpted Grease to make slip and slide patches.

Sculpted Glitterdust for precision blinding.

Summoned Monstrous Spiders for webbing/poison.

Silent Images of yourself/heirs.
