As of #903, current voting round is here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=15668383#post15668383)

Aaaaaand we're at thread #2! I know the other one (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=252267) was only at 49 pages, but I figured that it would be best to get it out of the way now in case the thread gets locked at 50+ pages in the middle of a voting round.

New thread, cool! And a tasty set of matches to start it, in my opinion. So let's see...

Haley vs. Lien.

I really like both of these characters. I definatly want to see more Lien in the comic. I love her bonus scenes during Elan's Underwater Adventure, and she has a shark, which is even cooler than Hinjo's dog. But Haley takes this one comfortably; she's one of my favorite characters in the whole strip.

Gannji vs. Girard Draketooth

A tougher choice here. The bounty hunters were pretty cool minor characters, and their scenes in the arena were very touching. I really like all the Order of the Scribble, and want to see more of them (prequel book anyone?). Tie-breaker on the look of the characters gives this match to the duel-wielding tattooed Illusionist.

Lien. I liked Lien and it's not like Haley would need my vote to win. Lien did a great job of being a reasonable voice during the exile on the ocean.

Girard.A vote of anticipation for what will his dreamworld corridor do to Nale once he gets insinde :smallamused:

Also, may I suggest putting some official link to the first incarnation of the tournament to the first post? Even though it can be tracked down from the spoilered stuff.

Urgh. These ones were actually kind of tough. It's fairly clear whose going to win both match-ups, but I had to think about both.

Lien is fun and sensible and has hints scattered all over the place that she has a history and character beyond the story being told. Haley, however doesn't have those hints, because we actually have her story, being told to us right now. I guess Lien takes it because I like that she showcases Rich's ability to paint in the background of minor characters without taking time away from the main cast.

Gannji and Girard. Gannji is cool, I guess? Sort of. He had some moments, but it's eminently clear why he's in the loser's cup. Girard has so few lines it's hard to get a real handle on him beyond 'I am chaotic, grr grr'. I guess Girard takes it because we are getting quite a bit of his character told through the environment, which has been quite effective so far.

Lien seems cool and all, but she's not really a very fleshed out character even by minor character standards. Haley Starshine, on the other hand, is one of the most well-developed characters in the entire comic, and she's pretty awesome herself to boot. Easy choice.

Haley. Give me a break. Superb, nuanced, believable character development. Also, she's likeable. Also: "Punch my ticket for the money train! Woo woo!"

Gannji. I've said it before, but I love how the Giant handles his neutral characters. Something about the unapologetic self-interest combined with certain standards of decency just does it for me. And I love how goddamn practical Gannji is -- weighing risk versus benefit during the ambush, convincing Enor not to run through the blade barrier, the whole kill-me-and-use-my-tail-for-a-resurrection plan, all that good stuff.

Lien is great, but come on. Haley is one of the very best characters in the comic, with a relatable and compelling inner struggle explained and supported by a detailed backstory. She loves a man she would agree is dumber than a box of moldy carrots and it's believable, it doesn't feel contrived, they're not together simply for the sake of plot. There's no way any minor character can best the wonderful miss Starshine.

I almost feel compelled to give Lien a pity vote, since she's an awesome character in her own right. But she just can't compete with Haley I'm afraid.

Girard is basically a huge jerk - but an interesting one. I'm curious to see what else the extremely paranoid illusionist has cooked up to defend his gate, but he's had too little screentime to take the cake here.

It is composed of the people who lost in the first round, with the exception of three replacements. In the FCT, the three souls bound to V were included in the first round. Unsurprisingly, they all lost. After that point, there was some discussion about who would be good to add to this tournament or to another, including Gladiator Warden and Zit-Faced Goblin. Ok, so Haley romped home, but I was surprised to see such a gap between Gannji and Girard. Hey ho.

Ok, this round is super-tough. A glance at my avatar will give you a clue as to my general opinion of cats, and Mr. Scruffy's (illusionary) death in 886 was possibly the most tragic thing I've seen in the comic recently (oh, apart from Durkon undying maybe). His defense of his master (in the arena and against Malack) were very touching moments. But I've always had a lot of sympathy for Miko; a (super)-flawed heroine who tried to be Good, managed (just about) to be Good all her life, and came to a tragic end. She's one of my favorite characters in the strip, and certainly one of the most...memorable. In tie-breakers I normally let the art decide, but I really like the look of both of these characters. I'll go for Miko, if only for reasons of plot significance, and because the whole Shojo-pretending-to-rule-through-his-cat was a little tedious.

Loser's Cup is easy; Hank.

Easy choices for me, too. I would have gotten rid of Mr. Scruffy two rounds ago--he's just not much of a character in his own right (unlike, say, Blackwing). Miko Miyazaki is one of my absolute favorite characters in the whole comic, so she's easily my pick.

I find Hank completely unmemorable. But I did get a number of laughs out of Skullsy.

I love Mr Scruffy's presence in the comic, but that's because of what he does for Belkar, not on his own merits. He's not even a character, he's just a cat. Miko, unpleasant and unlikeable though she may be, is a fully-fledged interesting character, an eloquent comment on some role-playing phenomena, and an example of the depth of this comic. My vote is for Miko.

Bling Cat

So these were both fairly easy for me, but they appear closer than I would have thought.

Miko is just more interesting, as a character. I mean, Mr Scruffy's cool. It's just, he's a cat. He's loyal, and affectionate, and a cat. Miko had flaws (And flaws, and flaws) and goals and was interesting.

Hank was just all around more entertaining to me. I like the reasonable man on the evil team. But I think part of the reason this looks so close is the circumstances we met each of them under. The Eye of Fear and Flame interacted primarily with Belkar, who gets a lot of good jokes, during an exciting and fast paced arc. Hank interacted primarily with Celia and Haley, 50% of which is not well loved, during a relatively slow arc that was not that well received.

Note that I'm not saying this to try and somehow discredit other's opinions, the ways we meet characters and the characters they interact with are large parts of how we see those characters, just thinking aloud about variables.

This round has required a lot of deliberation for me, I think mostly because Mr. Scruffy is so likeable and Miko is so unlikeable. The truth is, while Mr. Scruffy might be nothing more than a mirror to Belkar, he makes a really good mirror, who is the cause of a lot of character growth in Belkar, making Belkar a more complex character than a few other members of the Order (I'm looking at you, Durkon). However, Miko Miyazaki wins my vote because she, through her less-than-lovable antics, has propelled her own growth (and often a lack of any), the growth of other characters (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0285.html), and a very sizable portion of plot; she is, after all, the only reason they met Shojo, and the only reason Mr. Scruffy ever even came into the comic.

As for the Loser's Cup, I just really don't care about either of them. The Eye of Fear and Flame was significantly funnier than Hank, and given that neither of them had a huge amount of importance to the plot, I'm going to go for the one that allowed Belkar to be a tiny fire-breathing avatar of death.

Mr. Scruffy - Mr. Scruffy is amazing, 'nuff said
Skullsy - I liked him more than Hank

Mr. Scruffy - I was actually planning on voting for Miko at the start, since she's probably a deeper character. However, there is more to a good character than just complexity. Some people say that Mr. Scruffy is "just a cat", which is a notion that I find insulting. Mr. Scruffy is a cat, sure, but who is to say that a cat can't be a good character? In the end, while I did enjoy Miko, I probably like Mr. Scruffy more. Probably. I'm not sure, it's a tough decision, but my vote will fall on Mr. Scruffy in this round.

Hank - I liked Hank in his first appearance in the Origin of PCs, and I liked him in the online comic. He seems calm and reasonable, one might even describe him as a "chill dude". In either case, I hope to see more of him in the comic. Another aspect that is interesting is that he could go both ways: he could be an ally of the Order of the Stick, or he could be an enemy. Skullsy, while funny, is not quite as interesting. I'd argue that he's less of a character than Mr. Scruffy is.

So I finally registered and what am I doing with my first post? Voting on one of these polls. Well, anyways:
FCT
I am picking Mr. Scruffy. I know he's only a minor character, but he just fits in well, and who would have thought that Belkar would have ever really grown beyond his personal needs only? Miko was a major character for 2 books, but I found her so one dimensional and so unable for character growth in a "good" character that I never liked her.

LC
I really liked Skullsy, but I would pick HANK because of all the thieves, he always stood out to me as being a businessman first, where he uses legal documents to do his thievery instead of pick-pocketing.

Secret SoD Character - This was a tough one. Belkar is quite likeable, and has a lot of funny lines, and I really like his (fake?) character development, but I also really like the Secret Start of Darkness Character. Also, the Secret SoD character is vital to the development of one of my favourite characters in the comic, so... Yeah. I won't mind too much if Belkar wins this one, but I'm going to vote for the Secret SoD Character in this round.

Ho Thanh - Well, out of these two fairly minor characters, I suppose I liked Ho Thanh more. Inkyrius seemed more like a plot tool than an actual character. Can't say I care too much about Ho Thanh, though.

I'm rather tired of all the people who haven't read Start of Darkness and just vote for Belkar instead, but I'm also tired of the ones who haven't read it and vote for the SSoDC just based off of the few things said about him on the forum. If you haven't read it, it's rather annoying when you vote one way or the other, but I guess that's what happens when a character from a book you have to buy gets put into this competition. Having read Start of Darkness, however, I'm still going to vote for Belkar, because of the serious growth he has shown over the course of the comic, especially recently, as he becomes more aware of how others think of him, and starts to care. I didn't cry at all when Durkon died, but I did when Belkar told the party, especially from his last line: "Hurting people is the only thing I'm good at." He's starting to grow into my favorite character in this comic, which really amazes me, since he started as my least favorite.

Secret SoD Character is so much better, deeper and more complex character...

That's just not true. While Belkar was fairly one-dimensional for a good portion of the comic, over the last 30ish strips he REALLY has had some meaningful character growth. It's been been cool watching him realize there's more to life than your kill count, and I'm looking forward to seeing where he winds up at the end of this comic.

I think this round is the second-toughest call in the tournament for me (after Roy vs. Malack), especially since I only just recently got and read Start of Darkness. I haven't yet voted against a PC in this competition, even though I've been tempted a couple of times, but I might just have to here. Then again, Belkar does have a lot of great lines...but I've never considered him the funniest part of the comic or even the funniest PC. Fine. The Start of Darkness character it is.

The Loser's Cup round is much easier. Inkyrius never really stuck out to me as a character--I liked how s/he called V out during one of my favorite character arcs, but that's not enough to make hir a favorite of mine. On the other hand, I love most of the Azurites, and Ho Thahn is one of my favorite minor characters and one of the best characters in the Loser's Cup IMO.

I'd like to suggest that people who haven't read SoD should abstain from voting, since they don't really know whether they'd prefer Belkar or the Secret SoD character more. The fact that the Secret SoD character is doing so well even though not everyone has read SoD would suggest that some of the people voting for Belkar might not have if they had read SoD.

That being said, Belkar after the "redemption" ark is a fierce competitor to the secret SoD character, so it wouldn't be too bad if he won. That being said, I'd prefer it if Belkar won thanks to his own merits and not because he gets vote by default.

It's true that probably many people haven't read SoD, but I don't think it actually works directly in Belkar's favor. Many people don't vote here "for" specific character, they rather vote "against".
People often even explain their votes "I don't really know / remember / care about the other guy, but I simply hate Miko / Malack / Tsukiko /..."
Belkar is a character who evokes strong emotions, people either hate him or love him. Those who hate him would probably vote for Resistance Leaders or any other minor character over Belkar, so why not for character they don't even know.
In previous rounds not-so-popular Thanh almost defeated Belkar with 9/21 votes and even Crystal, who is probably most hated character of all got 4/42 against him.
So I think it doesn't really work in Belkar's favor to be up against a character some people don't know.

I don't have a problem with it; Keith Baker never appears in the main comics, so it's natural that that would work against him in a tournament of favourite characters from the main comic. If this were a tournament of favourite SoD characters, then it would probably be a different story.

Pssshhh. I saw character growth (although very, very gradual) as early as 435 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0435.html). In hindsight, the beginnings of some sort of responsibility were creeping into his reprobate personality in 408 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0408.html), if not sooner.

Wow, that`s a tough one. Belkar`s been getting a lot of character development, although I`m still not sure how much, but he`s very unlikable as is... and Secret SoD Character, although he`s had too little screen time, is awesome... really awesome. His relative better had listened to him. Er. So be it, then.
The second isn`t easy too, but... Inkyrius is the baker apprentice who confronted the dark entitity that had just destroyed wickedly an Ancient Black Dragon armed with a stick to protect vir (adopted) children. Sorry, the bravest man, I like you too.

Belkar

(and yes, I own and have read SoD)

The people who hate Bitterleaf tilt towards being moralists (probably some exceptions). This plays out with every morality check Burlew illustrates (V killing 20% of the black dragons with collateral damage; the elf commander tossing the goblin off the roof; Tarquin in general; etc etc). It's the same argument in different clothing every time. They tend to lament the popularity of characters they dislike.

Eventually Belkar or Malak will lose -- this forum isn't dark enough to let them win. But it won't be the SoD character who gets it done.

Thanh/Inky -- tough choice just because they both mean so little to me. I suppose Thanh, he had the better presence and more screen time.

Yeah, I love MitD, but Xykon is the Big Bad in this comic for a reason--he's an epicly awesome badass. His "Power is power" monologue is probably my favorite dialogue in the entire comic. No way can he lose to a character who, fundamentally, has been about comic relief and delivering a couple of deus-ex-machina to heroes in need; the comic could get along OK without MitD, but Xykon is the villain that makes the plot go round.

And, let's go with Scoundrel.
