View Full Version : Strips That Subvert Expectations from Their Titles

I can clearly remember the following phenomenon happening to me at least twice:
I check to see if there's a new OOTS strip. There is.
The title of the new OOTS strip suggests what the content of the strip will be.
I read the strip itself, and the content is radically different from my expectations; while the content very much fits the title, it does so in an unanticipated way.
The two strips in question are OOTS #638 (A Dragon's Victory) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0638.html), and OOTS #871 (Just a Couple of Blooddrinkers) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0871.html).
Any other strips whose titles made you think things would go one way, but then they turned out a totally different way?

Little Brother (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0878.html) made me think Malack was going to try to finish draining Belkar so that Vampire Durkon would have a little brother.

The Duel Everyone's Been Waiting For. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0780.html)
We finally get to see the long anticipated fight between the Belkar and the Righteous Slave. A fight that had been building and building over the course of the comic.
Had a sightly different level of skill than we were expecting. Not to mention who participated. :smallamused:

Personally speaking, with those criteria, all I've got is the Dragon's Victory.

That's a good catch. I don't remember seeing the title of that one before I read the strip though. Oftentimes I only notice the title afterwards, which makes it hard for me to play this game.
So I guess I should shut up now.

Well, I read most of the strip on a gigantic archive binge when I first found it, so I didn't even see most of the titles until much later.
"Just a couple of blood drinkers" is probably the only one that subverted my expectations. For example, I didn't know that "A Dragon's Victory" was called that until long after I read it for the first time. :smallfrown:
