As for me, I use sodipodi, a nice free drawing program.

InkScape for now. But I'm supposed to be learning Illustrator. -.-

I use a combo of Inkscape and Adobe Photoshop 7.

I use Paint.NET (http://www.getpaint.net/).

I use Inkscape to create them and gimp to upload them. I would like to buy Illustrator but its a bit expensive and Im not sure if its any better than Inkscape.

InkScape is literally a tame, newbie Illustrator. I'm supposed to be learning it for other reasons but when it comes to avatars the end quality is top notch.

I use Flash 8, so I can animate it. I'm also an Actionscript fan, and will swear by Flash on almost anything.

Waiting to get Illustrator. :smallsigh:

I use illustrator, photoshop, 3ds max and lots of other programs, but for avatars I just use illustrator, although I don't actually own it yet. For the record you can get almost any of these cool programs for $100-$200 with a student ID. I'm not saying that's cheap, but it's much more affordable than $3000. I got most of my autodesk software for free, because they like giving me free stuff, but adobe stuff I bought.

I get Illustrator for Christmas. I'm so impatient, but my trial still lasts 19 more days. Illustrator is the easiest program to use. I didn't even bother learning it cause it's so similar to photoshop and every other graphics program.

Student prices, ftw.

I got Illustrator and InDesign that way.

Amen to that Brother!

I find that inkscape is overly complicated and crashes my laptop...So I use it's older brother, Sodipodi.

Macromedia Fireworks. It's no Photoshop, but it suits my needs, since the effectiveness of a tool is limited by that of the user.

I use AI 8.0.1 and copy it into MSPaint where I save the image on Photobucket. Unfortunately this version of AI doesnt allow you to save images under anything PB accepts... *sighs*

For me, I used MS Paint to start, then realized it was way too hard and switched to the free Paint.NET ( http://www.getpaint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/) ). Made it much easier. =)

I use CorelDraw 9, which works roughly the same as AI, as far as I've heard.

Well I only really use these programs for illustrating maps for my AAR so I'm not about to splash out. That means GIMP and Inkscape all the way. I've been very impressed with the latter since I got it a month or two ago... vector graphics are impressive indeed.

I thought CorelDRAW had the same problem until I finally found out about the 'export' option. Maybe you overlooked anything?

Unless 8.0.1 was before there was grand grasp on the Internets, there should be a "Save for Web" option.

AmberVael

Inkscape + Illustrator CS2.

I mean, Illustrator is nice, but Inkscape is simple and easy.

There is no save to web feature.

Or transparencies. :smallfurious:

But I still havent explored all of the features yet... maybe I'll find something that lets me save under something other than .ai... or the other thing it can save under.

Easier to use than MS paint, and has more features than MS paint, they're both free programmes though!

I used to use Sodipodi, but I found I prefer Inkscape - they appear to be equally powerful, except for some of the bugs, such as the one in Sodipodi which would duplicate a node a great many times, making it difficult. Inkscape also has some nice path features that I don't remember Sodipodi having. Inkscape isn't bug-free, but I found they occur less frequently than in Sodipodi.

For raster art, I use GIMP, which I'm not particularly good at. I also use it to resize images and stuff - making something twice the size in Inkscape and scaling it down in Gimp seems to give a less blurred image.

Inkscape to make, GIMP to clean it up.

You get used to the duplication of nodes.

Sorry for not adding paint.net and the other drawing programs, those didnt come to mind at the time.

Yeah...It only annoys you enough to kill the program the first few times, after that it's just part of the avatar...

I was confused the first time it happened, now i only wish there was a hot key for "delete node". That would save time from moving the cursor around to the icon's.

Just select the nide with your mouse, then hit the normal delete button. Get's rid of them the same as delete node does.

I use Photoshop CS2.

Did my Miko fan art (in sig) entirely with that. I've realized that success or failure in Photoshop is largely based on how effective you are in using layers. the Miko fan art consisted of well over 50 before I started merging them.

(if we wanna be technical, I probably merged over a thousand layers while drawing that, given I use the line too to draw :p Lots of little lines make curves hehe.)
