Fortune City Showcase #6 presents: A Helios Adventure

A Radiator in Distress

11:14 AM, Outskirts of Fortune City

"C'mon, it's right over here!" A young, college boy with dry blonde hair, an athletic build, and thick glasses leads his two friends over to a warehouse in the middle of nowhere outside the gigantic city. The other two are a slightly younger aged female with short red hair and a less athletic male struggling to keep up with the two. He voices his concern out to his friend. "*huff* Look, are you sure- *huff* that there's such a thing out here? *huff*" He pants as he stops to catch his breath. The other boy simply waves over. "You wouldn't have come if you didn't believe me, right?"

The athletic man leads the other two into the warehouse. It's darkness covers the inside with only the few windows providing sunlight. There is only the sight of boxes as far as the three can see. The girl looks around the room nervously. "I can't see a damn thing here. How did you find this thing?" The blonde man pulls out a flashlight and flashes it towards a set of boxes that could be climbed. "Just took a little effort and a self-made staircase. Up and over!"

The three climb over the boxes and come out on the other side with barely any concrete ground not filled by the hard, wooden boxes. With a wave to his friends, the athletic boy flashes his light over to what first seemed like a humanoid figure. "Voila!" Flashing brightly is a suit of power armor, sickeningly-green in color and archaic in design. It's helmet is partially designed like a gas mask as if to survive in all forms of atmospheres. Closely hidden is a small graphic of a nuclear symbol on it's right shoulder plate.

"Well what do you think?" The athletic college boy looks in excitement at the old equipment. The girl instead is skeptical at it's appearance. "How did this get here?" By the time the less-athletic boy caught up, he seems very tired; it takes him a few moments to notice the armor, though when he does he appears flabbergasted by it. "Wait... I've heard about these things. I thought they were rumors, that they were decommissioned after the Cold War!" The athletic man puts his hand on his friend's shoulder with a smile. "You were always excited about machines. I thought you might enjoy seeing this."

They marvel at the machine for a short bit before the athletic man jumps to his feet. "Well no sense staying longer than we need to. Let's get back home before; I have a soccer game tomorrow and need to get prepared for it." While he and the girl were quick to start their way over the boxes, the other boy is hesitant. "I'm gonna catch up later. I need to rest a bit..." The other two nod and let him be as they take off back for the city.

Sometime later, there is a sickeningly-green light radiating from the warehouse...

Meanwhile...

While the city allows a bit of peace after the past couple hectic days, Alan has the chance to adjust and test run Helios' thrusters and maneuverability. Upwards in the sky, his sensors map out a airborne "track" of sorts that is mapped out my a series of transparent crystals. Some rings are spread out less evenly than others, requiring precise turning to quickly complete. It's a simple test of Helios' ability to maneuver after some adjustment with it's thrusters.

Henry Sykes is on communications, there to watch over the test and crunch numbers as needed.

Considering you've RP'ed Henry before, I thought it might be best for you to stick with it. You'd know him better than I do.

So we have a test for Helios. Have Helios pass through each crystal in order to test his flight and maneuver capabilities. For this, please roll a Flight power check.

In another part of Fortune City, a teenage boy with an interesting watch of some sort is found sleeping on a simple wooden bench. The lack of comfort it would apply is unappealing; anyone with a brain would rather sleep at home. For Declan Tennant however, he doesn't get that luxury. Since the event at the bank, he's still been living as he has. Being on the run doesn't have the same drive as it seems in fiction.

So another day comes with it's own challenges. In Declan's case it's simply trying to live. He is destined for greatness, yet not sure when he will find it. Yet as some people say, it is best to seek it out than to wait for it to come. So for today, what is Declan's plans?

Sorry I haven't much direction for Declan atm, but I'm hoping you might have an idea before the inevitable team-up. We'll get you back into the team soon enough!

11 Heroes-In-One!

"Ugh . . ."

[Judge Tennant, it is time for your scheduled patrol. Activate]

Declan groans again "Five more minutes . . . "

[No Sir, I am using three separately accurate measures of your Terran time keeping methods and I'm sure to the the 99.9999999999999% that you should already be active.]

At that Declan rolls off the bench with a labored sigh and stretches his back. Living rough was more than beginning to take its toll but at least he still hadn't seen any MIB following him, Area 51 finding him again was not something he wanted to contemplate right now.

So what was he going to do? Yeah he had to patrol but so long as he wandered around the city OMNI didn't seem to comment, which means he needed something to actually do.

Public parks, at least the nice ones, tended to have those bulletin boards for people to put up posters for concerts and festivals and things, Declan thought to himself, so maybe there would be something to get his mind off of the miasma of constant danger and mild malnutrition.

With that he went to search for something to while away his day with.

Sorry if it's a little bland, but I couldn't think of how a homeless, lonely, teenage superhero would spend his time, without just "patrols city" so I needed to think of a way for you guys to give him something to do until you were ready to put these two heroes together. :smalltongue:

Alan Ballard - Helios

The sun was out, the sky was blue, and the puffy white clouds rolled on by as Alan a.k.a. Helios was soaring high above the city.

Time to test the MERCURY System again.

"Alright Henry, all ready to go here!" Alan says excitedly to his partner back at the lab. "Engage the AR test course."

"Roger that - the AR system is booting up. You should see it overlaid on your HUD...now. Just give the word and we will start the course. I designed this program myself, so don't expect it to be easy now!" Henry replied, his voice coming through the SOLAR Battlesuit's internal speakers.

"Yep, I see it now, ok...test start!"

The MERCURY System orb, floating around the suit glows brightly and activates, socketing into the back of the suit itself. The thrusters ignite brightly as Alan rockets towards the first ring.

Helios

Helios flies through the air at incredible pace as his sensors reach close proximity with each crystal to count them as touched, triggering the next crystal to reach. After finishing the first lap, the records appear on Henry's computer which indicate near-optimal speed but slightly below-average capabilities in maneuvering.

The next cap comes in a test of Alan's reflexes in addition to Helios' capabilities. Now the crystals indicated on the solar machine's sensors begin moving around in slightly eccentric patterns. This should put Alan's quick-thinking and planning ahead to action when considering Helios' speed and where the crystals will be by the point he reaches them.

Okay, this time please roll Flight and Agility as separate rolls.

Declan

Checking the nearby public park, Declan can see a few things available on the bulletin board found next to the gravel walkway that is surrounded by the tree-filled forest. Among them includes a few events of interest. One happens to be a heist that had occurred at Magnam Caelo a few days back, foiled with the help of a group of heroes that have been there at the time.

Other bulletins posted show a new technology shop opening a few blocks and streets down from this park. The shop's advertisement indicates that, aside from having the newest hi-tech parts available for computers, machines, etc, it is also open for people to hire whether for full-time or part-time application. Another place that is open for application is a small salad bar on the other side of the park. Neither job requires much for part-time applicants and if Declan will be in need of money, then it is an idea to think about.

If trying to apply isn't something Declan wants to think about, a couple festivals and other events are happening that he can have a look at if he wants.

Gave a couple ideas for Declan to check if he might be interested. Otherwise if you have a better one Raynn (indicated by my last line) I'd be glad to hear it and I can work it out as we go.

Declan Tennant - Roulette

Since Declan had little in the way of redeemable skills or computer savvy he decided that working minimum wage at a salad bar might be a little more his speed. With that Declan made his way to the salad, homeless and sans a resume, with minimal hopes of actually getting the job he so desperately needed but still willing to give it a shot.

Alan Ballard - Helios

"Alright, test phase one complete." Alan said, slowing to a stop and watching as the crystal rings on his HUD faded away. "Henry, begin phase two." he said, and watched a new set of crystal rings appear - these ones moving in patterns. A new challenge indeed.

Making a few slight modifications, he gathered his focused and engaged his rocket jets.

Helios

Unlike before, Helios' performance this lap is phenomenal. The results exceed expectations as the solar machine makes no flaws in navigating to and from each moving crystal. Maneuverability and top speed seem to be in order; perhaps an adjustment in acceleration can be made later on.

As for the third and last lap of the test, the crystals continue their pattern, now instead firing small, electric shots at Helios. The lasers, as they appear to look like, are completely harmless and don't cause any actual damage or disruption to anything. This is something of a simulation, to Helios' capability to evade and close in on targets in a hypothetical aerial situation. Those who look from below can see quite the light show happening.

Last one now. Could you make three rolls please? One for Flight, one for Agility, and one for Dodge.

Declan

The walk over to the salad bar is pretty uneventful for Declan. The park is quiet, calm, and overall serene; one might call it boring but the name isn't called Serenity Park for nothing. It's odd how this park came to be in the busy and shiny streets of Fortune City, but it has. Being such a contrast meant that visitors are few and far between; any actual exciting activity that might happen here is very unlikely. It does make a good place to rest at least.

The salad bar itself is small but fitting enough. Smooth, ceramic tiles cover the floor as Declan enters Monaco's Salads. The walls are of a light-beige color to match the floor, simple and not very eye-catching, but elegant nonetheless. Wooden tables and chair sit near the side of the building closest to the entrance door, well-crafted from solid and firm brown wood. Towards the back half, Declan can see the aforementioned bar, containing numerous salads and dressings put out in an all-you-can-eat-buffet manner. The choices available are numerous and quite possible enough to make any customer have their mouth water.

It takes but a moment for the receptionist, a young, brown-haired woman of Declan's age to notice him enter. "Good morning," she says in a sweet tone. "Welcome to Monaco's Salads. What may I do for you today?"

This took WAY longer than it should, I apologize for that.

"Well, um, I'm sort of looking for a job and I saw on a flier that you . . . um we're looking for people? To uh. . . work here?"

Declan hadn't been speaking to a lot of people of late so his trademark charm had kind of degraded through lack of contact with humans who weren't trying to kill him "I'm a hard worker and I'm free to work whenever."

Declan feels awkward as all hell trying to pretty much beg for a job, without a resume, like this but he didn't really have a choice. He wished to god that a super villain would burst into the building so he could save the day and impress the girl and feel cool but he doubted he was that lucky.

Alan was happy with his results on the second part, but now they were moving onto the final test.

"Alright Henry, final trial. Begin."

The rockets fired yet again as the armored hero shot through the sky.

At the end of the final lap, and the test by extension, Helios' results come in astoundingly. Outside of a little time loss in reaching each crystal, Alan and his machine are able to evade shot after shot while completing the course. The tremendous skill and speed is given an applause by the people below, who had been viewing what looked like a fireworks display of some sort. Part of it also might be due to the events that had happened at the bank and casino before. Becoming a hero comes with it's publicity, for better or worse.

If Helios wishes, he could take this moment to go down and meet the populace. They'd be excited to meet one of Fortune City's now-known heroes.

Make me a Perception check please.

Declan

The receptionist makes a smile to Declan's query, the kind of smile a person uses for their job more than for genuine emotion. "Well I do believe we are hiring. Let me take you to the manager." She moves from her small wooden desk corner by lifting a small piece of it to let her pass by. Slowly she begins leading him down the salad bar. It's rather small in activity today; little more than a few customers are in the bar actually eating. A quiet place such as this might be good for Declan to hide as a job due to the lack of activity. Though if this place is search, Declan won't have much here to hide.

Giving Declan a quick look at the main bar, the receptionist takes a moment to ask Declan, "So why might you be interested in a job? We don't tend to get many applicants here so we'd appreciate the help." She seems to seek to strike up conversation with the potential worker, nothing more out of simple curiosity.

Can you make me a Perception check Raynn?

"Well I'm interested partly because this place is near where I'm living and partially because it seems like a nice place to work to make a little extra cash to help get by, you know?" Declan fiddles with Omni-Morpher as he speaks, hoping OMNI doesn't decide to randomly speak up and break his cover.

"Alright!" Alan exclaimed as he completed his flight trials. "Everything seems to be working just find Henry." he says cheerfully to his friend over the comms.

"Looks like I've attracted quite an audience. I'm going to make a quick stop to say hi, and tell them that science is way cool and all that. I'll head back to base afterwards and we can analyze the data. Helios out." he says into his comms and then banks in the air, heading down to the crowd of people.

Helios

Coming down to meet the group of people, Helios sees about a dozen people, all trying to crowd him in amazement. Their voices and questions try to drown each other. "Ohmygod, it's Helios!" "I can't believe he's here today!" "What happened above? Another great battle?" "Wow he looks bigger than he seems on television." "Is that suit heavy to wear?" All this rush of questions and calls makes it hard for him to respond easily to the civilians.

Though distracted, Helios does happen to notice something a good ways down the road. In the distance looks like a large, biped mechanoid somewhat in the way that Helios is also one. From the distance he can see it as a sickeningly green color, marching forward in what seems like a clumsy manner. It partially looks like it'll fall over despite it being able to casually smash and knock away vehicles with a fling of it's arm. People who see it run away as it makes it's way down the street.

Declan

The receptionist nods cheerfully to Declan, not picking up about his homelessness and poverty. "Well, for the first two weeks you'll be in a training of sorts. We'll show you how to set up the bar and manage orders. I believe minimum wage will be the payment for those weeks and once you've got that under your belt, you should be able to work for better wage."

She gives another smile as she takes notice of the bracelet on Declan's watch. "Oh hey," she pipes up as she bends down a little, staring at it with a kitty-like curiosity. "What is that, a bracelet? Didn't know there was a new model of those things."

Ugh, this took WAY longer than needed. Anyway, Declan fails to notice anything with that roll of his.

Declan glances at the Omnimorpher and goes with his prepared cover story "Oh. Actually it's a medical device. It releases medication into my blood stream periodically to prevent an excessive and dangerous build up of phlegm in my lungs. It's totally irrelevant really, no danger, as I have hours without it before I need to go to a hospital. Most of the time I forget it's even there."

He had to explain away always having to wear the exact same clunky high tech looking watch some how, so he had seen the question coming.

Helios landed amidst the throng of gathering people and held up his hands in a placating manner. "Whoa, one at a time!" he said, smiling underneath his helmet.

Unfortunately, that smile quickly faded as he saw the lumbering monstrosity coming down the street. Trashing cars and buildings, people fleeing - yeah definitely a job for a guy in power armor.

"Everyone remain calm and please evacuate away from the oncoming threat!" he says in a calm manner while ascending slightly above the crowd so everyone could see him. He points in the opposite direction of the mechanical creature and waves people on before engaging thrusters and moving to deal with the mechanoid.

The civilians take one look at the bumbling, approaching machine before taking heed of Helios' words and retreat a short distance away. They seem aware of the danger but would rather watch Helios from cover, whether they may be walls or trees. Provided none of them muster the courage to try and help out the solar hero, they shouldn't be in danger.

Proceeding to the other mech, Helios can notice a few oddities with it. The strange, unprofessional marching it is doing can be judged from Alan's own experience. The pilot, if there is one, likely does not have a grasp on how to control such a thing. In addition, the machine is old, as if made long ago. It's color is a sickening green, thinner in design but a couple feet bigger than Helios. A helmet resembling a gas mask covers the head, it's right shoulder bearing a nuclear sign on it. All signs point to it as some sort of nuclear warmech.

http://th04.deviantart.net/fs39/PRE/i/2011/054/5/d/retro_power_armor_colors_by_innerabove-d1qu41q.jpg

Aside from cosmetics, Helios can also detect a heat reading coming from the machine. The source indicates a spreading, radiating cloud that is leaking out from the old, nuclear machine. For Helios, this is not a problem; for others, it's a very dangerous reactor leak that could spread out across the city at the rate it's at. In addition to the leak, the engine that this nuclear machine runs off rises in power, which alongside it's rusted age can be assumed to have contributed to the leak in the first place.

The machine meanwhile looks to Helios, as if scanning him to see if he's friend or foe. The machine takes notice of it's increasing energy in the meantime, and in attempt to discharge it throws it's hand outward. A sudden blast of radioactive energy charges and shoots out from the palm of it's hand, blasting through the wall of one of the nearby buildings!

Declan

The receptionist gives Declan one of those looks, the kind of look that shows a further interest in the device rather than losing curiosity. "Well that's new to me. Is the device new for patients?" She begins to bend her legs down to take a closer look at the bracelet, whether or not of Declan's will...

*CRASH*

Without warning, the wall besides the two breaks and bursts open with a loud, rough cry of breaking bricks and metal. A sickly green energy beam emerges as the perpetrator of the destroyed wall as it careens straight through the room, stopping as it strikes the wall on the other side and leaves a burnt, foul-smelling black mark.

The receptionist and the other customers instinctively panic as the wall breaks, dropping to the floor to hide and cower. The screams of the few people here along with that of those outside suddenly make things sound like a football game stormed into a full-seated opera house. Whatever the blast was, Declan could guess it's part of a superhero battle or a villainous ploy.

Ugh, this took way longer than it should. Combat time!

Declan glances towards the perpetrator, then to his Omni-Morpher then to the interviewer. He contemplates the obvious then resigns himself to what he has to do "Okay. I want you to keep in mind hiring a super hero would be an awesome story to tell your grand kids, and I'm avoiding the cliche of running out of sight to change simply because that is wasted time that puts your life at risk."

He sizes himself up against the bad guy, turning away from the woman "Also keep in mind . . . this is going to be awesome."

He slams his hand down on the Omni-Morpher "HENSHIN-TIME!"

Alan cringed as the robot's fist smashed into a building. This thing is out of control...though it looks very ungainly. he thinks to himself as his jets propel him toward his target, when suddenly his sensors detect a new presence as a strange golden robotic creature creates some sort of time-dilation field.

He stops outside of melee range of the green mech and broadcasts a message vocally and through radio, attempting to reach the pilot - if there is one. "Attention unidentified mech! Cease and desist all operations or I will be forced to deactivate you by any means necessary!" he demands, and as if his threat needed to be backed up - the palms of his suit glow brightly with the energy from the miniature sun powering his suit.

Time begins slowing down to a crawl as Roulette transforms and roars out with his powers. Falling debris goes from the speed of terminal velocity to a gentle snail's pace from the sky to the ground. This gives the civilians more than enough time to back away from the chaos that is ensuing. The nuclear robot has also slowed down to pace that makes it difficult for it to move at a reasonable pace. At Helios' command however, the robot fidgets a bit not unlike what a human reaction would be.

The nuclear machine's response on the other hand reacts differently to the intimidation. Facing Helios as the biggest threat to the machine, the machine opens a horizontal vent from it's chest armor. A searing burst of flame emits from it out at Helios; the spread of it to ensure an attack! A dull blue light emits from it's feet in the meantime, powering up at slower speeds thanks to Roulette's prior action.

The machine is Impaired from the intimidation, though now hostile to Helios. It fires a Cone Area Blast. Roll DC 27 Toughness and DC 22 Dodge for half effect.
