How To Random Banter:
Rules of the Random Banter Thread

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

So, without further ado: post! (Did I miss anything?)

mmmmmm........ thread.

So. Dairy Queen is now serving Blizzards IN WAFFLE CONES. The only problem I ever had with Blizzards was that I had to get them in a cup, which (to me at least) doesn't taste as good, and you waste ice cream that way. But now? BLIZZARD IN A WAFFLE CONE. This is kinda a big deal for me.

We don't have a Dairy Queen. We did by the guy intentionally run it poorly to get like, tax breaks or something like that. Point is we don't have one and that makes me sad.

THAT'S HORRIBLE! :smallfrown:
And probably illegal. But do you at least have an awesome local ice cream shoppe to make up for it? I mean, most places have one of those. Even Hackensack and Fountain here in Minnesota have those, and their combined total population is under 1000. Even larger places like Rochester have them - Flapdoodle's is strictly local, but it has the BEST ice cream of anywhere I've been.

I believe there's an expression about selling ice cream to an eskimo or something equally offensive. I think that in Lala's case, her proximity to Santa Claus may also effect the viability of such business models.

Trying to extrapolate from Texas or Minnesota to anywhere else is going to lead to a bad time. Except possibly Texas to Kansas and Minnesota to Wisconsin.

It's meant to be. Their slogan is "Flapdoodle's: where the only thing that makes sense is the ice cream." Their walls and tables are decorated with nonsensical proverbs and jokes, and their signature thing is serving upside-down cones in bowls, in sizes named after various types of sailing ships.

Nope.

Well, I'm reasonably certain that's insurance fraud, whether it was the mayor or not. :smallannoyed: But either way, that's sad.

Well, I figured Minnesota to Canada was fairly safe. :smalltongue:
But really, it would make more sense to me for other places to have more ice cream restaurants than the state that's frozen over for half the year. Well, not Canada. That I figured was the same.

Going by pure math, the town where I live gets less then 24 hours of sunlight in our coldest winter month. So yes, we get pretty damn cold :smalltongue:

The only fast food restaurants we have are McDonalds and KFC. Subway and Quiznos too, if you count sub places.

Wisconsin and Minnesota are renowned for being dairy-obsessed though, even to dairy-obsessed people. Like, Vegans spontaneously lose their veganity or are expelled from the state by a sort of reverse-osmotic pressure. That's how dairy-obsessed they are. :smalltongue:

The main similarity seems to be the accent from what I've gathered, and I've never been able to tell if that's actually an accent or a cultural in-joke of putting everyone else on...

Stressful. For the upcoming days, my schedule will look like this:
Wake up
Go to Uni
Do tons of programming
Go home
Eat dinner
Study stochastics
Go to bed

I should hopefully start getting my evenings clear again by Wednesday, but that depends on how well the programming goes. In the worst case, we'll probably have to devote an evening as well just to get our prototype running on time...

I've been there when I was a wee thing, methinks! Not too sure though. Steampunk event sounds cool though (I lurked the photo thread), were a lot of interested in it?

For the record, it's in Gävle, consists of a large carbarn filled with different locomotives and carriages, and has a large open field with bushes and small rolling hills through which a mini-train takes passengers for a short ride.

And some were. We failed a bit at linking together my outfit with the event (our table was a bit offside, I think many may've missed it), so I'm afraid most of those who I managed to boggle won't have a term to link it together with. And we were too late to be spotted by the press, who only visited the area in the earlies hour. But, I think it was good anyway.

Hope your shoulders recovers quickly and you don't have to strain them again for a while.

Nah, now I'll only have to lug my everyday backpack with my computer back and forth to school for a whole week. I can already hear my back sing of joy... :smallwink:

The DQ the I had growing up would inexplicably close down, then re-open a few months later. They eventually built one on one of the main roads in my town, though, so it's nice if I ever feel like going there.

Unfortunately, I'm more or less broke until my residency starts this summer. It's nice to be able to game twice a week or so, though. I guess you can have time or money, but not both.

Yes, and it tasted terrible.

Oh, my. The wedding reception was still enjoyable, I hope.

Those people whom you know that do: did they ever confirm the kind of tea?

Ah. Good luck in your endeavours, and I hope your mother likes them.

How do the foul-flavoured ones taste like?

Odd. My mother says the opposite, but she's not an expert on American dining...

Do they? I've never had that experience before. :smallconfused:

As I said, that is really too bad. A good carrot cake is delicious.

It was. After all, I don't drink tea or coffee.

No. The people I know who like tea just like tea.

She will.

It's hard to say... They have a kind of after-taste that's difficult to describe.

That's okay. Mum's aren't always right.

Well... The sandwiches are usually cut before they reach your table.

ION: Wtf pneumonia is a real thing. And it IN MAH LUNGSSSS.:smallfrown:

We're America. Of course we do things differently. :smalltongue:

Granted, I can't remember who had the bright idea to make it so that proper eating was cutting the food, setting the knife down, switching the fork, taking a bite, switching the fork back, picking up the knife, and then cutting the food again. Needless to say, I don't abide by that set of mores.

Not that kind of cut up. The kind where you eat it with a knife and fork, defeating the entire point of a sandwich unless it's an open-faced sandwich. Though why open-faced sandwiches are called sandwiches I'll never know.

It's acceptable if you can't do it the proper way.

Well... If a sandwich is that large or overfilled, then it's not really a practical sandwich. And that would be because the open-faced sandwich was invented by a person who intended to make an ordinary sandwich but then realised he only had one slice of bread left. For some reason, the idea caught on.

Either way, "wat".

No. That's not her brother. Her brother would have differently coloured hair.

In related news: My Brother is an idiot. How can he possibly have expected me to know he was asleep at six in the evening if he doesn't tell me? All he did was yell at me whenever I made the slightest noise, which is no different from an ordinary evening.
I really wish he would realise that swearing at me just makes me ignore him.

Well, yes, they are not good for you, but it's also cake. It's unlikely to be good for you at the best of times and circumstances, even when homemade. :smalltongue:

The names alone of those dishes sound intimidating. Granted, I've always been kind of leery of liver, especially when I learned what gout was. :smalleek:

How so? It's sweet, baked porridge, isn't it?

Amidams, eh? Heh. That'd give us the distaff counterpart of Amigams. :smalltongue: Mmm, gams... :smallamused:

Ooh, snap, you just can't handle the deliciousness that is called frosting, then!

At least when you start baking the cake from scratch you are aware of the ingredients that you use. That way you have the power and hopefully skills (at least the skill to google!) to change whatever you need to for example make the cake healthier.

I only like liver when it's minced and made into a casserole with some yum yum raisins. It's rather sweet. Liver in all other occasions - kill me now. :smallsigh:

Since when has mämmi been sweet... :smalltongue:

... I have this feeling that I'm missing something as I have no clue what Amigams is or anything. :smalltongue:

Flogiston was the element in stuff that burned. Which is not a bad idea, even though it's wrong. Then they noticed that stuff actually grows heavier when it burns (because oxygen is added), so for a while they toyed around with flogiston having negative mass. But in the end Lavoisier and Scheele independently showed that oxygen was the thing.

It can be hard for new people. It's not impossible, but it can be done. Of course, I can't remember how...

Well, there are a number of approaches. Mine was the "lurk around and post stuff whether people respond to them or not until you just become an integrated part of the thread", while the other extreme seems to be the "respond to everyone to maximise exposure (and responses). I suppose you can find someone who loves the same topic as you do and just engage in long multi-page conversations as well, but that generally requires some thread familiarity to start with...

An approach which practically never works, however, is to post links to different Internet phenomenons out of the blue and expecting people to respond to them. It may be called Random Banter, but we generally prefer it to be personal randomness.

Jeez, sounds rough. I'm here for you if you need it!

Ph does not exist in Swedish except as a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions.

Most of them are pretty tasteless. They've somehow managed to find ways to make sugar no longer taste like anything, so all that is left is the feeling of one's pancreas slowly writhing in agony. If it actually has flavor I can eat it.

I'm sorry the idea of healthier and cake is still confusing me. The only idea remotely similar to that I'm familiar with has been using fructose and milk powder in order to cut down on the amount of glucose because of diabetes.

My main experience is with the foul smell of liver and onions and the horrible chalkiness of fried chicken livers. Also pate. Pate is the most disgusting spread I've seen to date.

Hm, the recipe seemed to call for predominantly sugar without actually burning it. What flavor is it supposed to evoke to be eaten as a dessert then if there's no sweetness to it? :smalltongue:

Gams are, well... gams (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/12/reese-witherspoon-short-shorts-photos_n_3262823.html).

One of Us! One of Us! :smallamused:

It's acceptable if you can't do it the proper way.

Not good enough, we must headbutt all adherents to formal dining etiquette into submission or something. :smalltongue:

Well... If a sandwich is that large or overfilled, then it's not really a practical sandwich. And that would be because the open-faced sandwich was invented by a person who intended to make an ordinary sandwich but then realised he only had one slice of bread left. For some reason, the idea caught on.

I don't even know where you're going or coming from with this line of thinking. :smallconfused: The idea communicated to me, which seemed to have been confirmed was of an ordinary sandwich that would be served to be eaten with one's hands instead being cut up into bite-sized chunks at the table and eaten with a knife and fork to the possible chagrin and almost certain confusion of the establishment.

Besides, making a sandwich bursting at the seams is an American tradition (https://www.google.com/search?q=dagwood,+sandwich&client=firefox-a&hs=RJd&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=gSKRUYSYMOGfyQH664CwCw&ved=0CDoQsAQ&biw=1901&bih=943).

The tricky thing about open-faced sandwiches and that explanation is how they're typically slathered with gravy, hollandaise sauce, or substances that you can only hope are hollandaise or bearnaise sauce because the alternatives are too horrifying to contemplate.

Whap him with a rubber chicken and remind him that you can't anticipate his wishes and he needs to communicate his thoughts to you in a direct and intelligible fashion and that if he continues to spew nothing but profanity at you, you will continue to ignore him save when it comes time to administer his daily rubber chickening?

However, regardless of my opinions on the matter of the name, Xyz summons are a thing, and by now quite a potent one, and to ignore them is often to hand victory to your opponent (considering that even with the dominance that synchro monsters had prior to the advent of Xyz monsters there are precious few synchro focused decks that reach the upper echelons of the current tournament scene- and whilst some of this can be attributed to the under-utilisation of synchro-based archetypes, it also must be the case that Xyz monsters have reached the point that Xyz monsters have the effect power and the attack power to hold their own, for otherwise entire tournaments would fall to the one guy who brought a synchro deck...)

Yes, but my issue with them (and the entire metagame, now) is that there are no costs. Really. The only one that you could even say is Solomn, and that's a flat negate. But before, if you were gonna get a 3k/2.5k monster, it wouldn't ALSO have a BLS destroy-once-a-turn power. BLS is still OP, of course. But it's in the lower echelons of idiotic-power-level considering some synchro/xyz monsters.(Oh, and Exodia decks suck too, because ONE DAY OF PEACE ONE DAY OF PEACE ONE DAY OF PEACE->Have 2 cards left in deck.:smallannoyed:). I COMPLAIN ABOUT THE YUGIOH METAGAME.

I can dig it if you don't enjoy it because it is unpleasant and/or offensive. Can't really help that. But I've never bought into the belief that the topic of lyrics were, in any way, a factor in their evaluation. You can have wonderfully creative and poetic lyrics about being awesome and getting all the ladies and utterly inane and awkward lyrics with more social/political relevance.

I'm not saying that's what you were doing but, for me personally, the topic of the lyrics are tertiary compared to the lyrics themselves.

NOTE: And, in my humble opinion, self aggrandizement tends to attract the types of people who pay more attention to lyrical finesse. I dunno.

Ah. I could not hear the music itself, and could only read the lyrics. Perhaps I would have enjoyed him more if I could actually hear the sound itself.

Ehhh... In some cases. But not in this one. Generally hip hop plays things in reverse compared to other genres, where the lyrics are their to aid the music. In hip hop the lyrics are the headliners and the beats are there to bring that out. So, in Bronson's case, you should have been able to read them and appreciate them nonetheless.

Again, if you didn't I won't be offended. Even as a creepily obsessed hip hop fanatic I'll be willing to admit it can be a hard genre to love sometimes.

Eh, I've never been much on lyrics. I much prefer to listen to how the vocalist delivers them, rather than what they actually are, or what they mean. I'll acknowledge there's talent in writing them, but I'm far more interested in a vocalist's ability to, well, sing (or rap/speak/scream, as the genre may demand).

Oh absolutely, that's certainly true. Waka Flocka Flame, for instance, can't pen a lyric to save his life, but we continue to listen to him because his rap snarl is just so damn infectious.

Certainly hip hop, perhaps alongside folk, is the most lyric-heavy genre of popular music out there so, in this case, it's important but with other genres like rock or metal I've never been too bothered by lyrical failings. My favorite rock group CAN were no lyricists, nor did they try to be. If you chastise CAN for failing to deliver the clever lyrics you're probably missing the point.

Hm. Perhaps the tempo is not for me, then.

How could you dislike music in general? :smallconfused: That's horrible! That's like saying you don't like food, or language!

I cannot accurately convey in words my immediate physical reaction to this, so I will attempt to sum it up as such:

*gestures wildly at you in confusion and frustration*
I apologise if this offends you, but I simply do not find comfort in music. It's grating, and one of the very few things that can, in theory, throw me into a furious outrage.

My favourite sound is the sound of silence. :smalltongue:

He's a devil-worshipping cleric that has a thing for summoning undead spirits to fight for him. I've got the backstory up to the point where he joins the diabolical cult, but I'm going to take a break from it for tonight.

What, exactly, does CAN deliver? :smallconfused:

CAN? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QLL2j8ZtxE)

In general I find rock to be at its best when it's trying not to be rock. The tropes and imagery of rock are marketable and time tested, sure, but they're stagnant and have been holding back a genre that, by now, really should have reached a higher realm than "entertainment". Bands like CAN (and CAN especially) make rock art by acknowledging and warping the tropes and cliches of the genre (if not outright ignoring them) and merely exploring the sounds the traditional five piece rock group can make on their own terms, away from preconceived notions of what that kind of set up should play.

How important are vocals?
Aren't these blues influences dated?
For that matter, why is melody so emphasized?

CAN doesn't feature traditional influences, I'm almost positive any similarities to funk, progressive rock and psychedelic rock are entirely coincidental. While freed from pop/blues structures they were basically able to explore in any direction they wanted, be it 20 minute bass and drum driven jams, strings of expressive guitar solos, reverb/distortion/feedback experimentation. Their music is a triumph of experimentation over outright indulgence and progression over traditionalism. It's still rock, certainly, it doesn't divorce itself entirely from that label but the things it does to that label are just exquisite.

Ph does not exist in Swedish except as a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions.

No, that's pH. Ph is a singer. :smallwink:

That's cool. Wikipedia tells me Chicago has a very mixed heritage with many immigration groups, with 0.91% considering themselves of Swedish blood, so I'm not all too surprised. Still cool, though. You should dig a little in your family history, see where people came from and why they left (even though the answer to the second is probably "famine")...

Hey, wasn't there someone in here who disliked almost all tastes of food, and would prefer not to eat if it was physically possible, or am I mixing this up with another source?

Also, I don't you can compare it to language just straight away. Language is mainly a tool of communication and evolves with the introduction of new concepts and the simplification of old ones, while music primarly is a means of creating or expressing emotion, and evolves as musicians find new ways which pleases them. Food is more like music in that we cook to give it a pleasing taste, and new flavours are invented as cooks try new ways to achieve that.

Also, I find disliking music in general to be pretty legit. At its highest level of abstraction, it's a long stream of ever-changing noise, and as such, I'm not surprised some only find it tiresome...

No idea what a flogiston thrower it, but I presume it involves blowing stuff up, so tell me about it

It's more properly spelled as Phlogiston. Anyway... It's from an incorrect theory in which people used to believe that fire was caused by the release of a substance called Phlogiston that was contained in all flammable materials in differing quantities. If we throw modern science to the wind and instead assume that alchemy is reasonably correct, then a Phlogiston Thrower would be a device to hurl Phlogiston, probably distilled from various sources using elaborate copper and glass equipment, at things to set them on fire.
Of course, I can't remember the entirety of the Theory of Phlogiston, so I'm probably wrong on numerous points.

Yeah. That's a better explanation.

It is phonetically correct... :smalltongue:

So is Phlogiston, which comes from Ancient Greek.

Ay. Phlogiston.

Just thought I'd stop by and say hi.

Hello!

Wasn't there a conversation once about transliterating φ as ph vs. f? Doesn't Swedish tend towards the latter?

I too assumed that it was a difference between English and Swedish.
It makes sense in a way. When it comes to transliterating words and roots from one language into another, it's best to use a method that would appeal more the people who are going to end up using it.
Naturally, I know nothing about the prevalence of ph in Swedish, so I'm probably wrong about this particular case.

Ph does not exist in Swedish except as a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions.

Oh look. Confirmation. Again... Damn you Asta!
I should wake up earlier so I can better participate. Okay... Not that early...

Not good enough, we must headbutt all adherents to formal dining etiquette into submission or something. :smalltongue:

Usually I just give up on any pretence of formal dining etiquette after laying the table. None of my siblings listen to me anyway. One starts eating before everything is served and another refuses to use a knife even when steak is served.

Well... The theory is, if the sandwich is meant to be cut up, that'll be done before it's served. The default is to cut the sandwich in question into two triangular halves, triangles being deemed fancier than rectangles. If not, then no knife should be provided.
I don't know, I try not to judge people on whether or not they eat their sandwich with a knife and fork.

Is there anything impractical that isn't an American tradition?

Actually, the real problem with that explanation is I made it up on the spot. I assumed I would be called out on it, but apparently not... Anyway... Obviously, I've not grown up around such strange and unnecessary sandwiches. Open-faced sandwiches around here are just bread with a couple of things on it of the kind that aren't often a staining hazard.

That has as much chance of working as building a nuclear bomb out of hats. Theoretically possible, but not at all likely to be practical. I told him that there was no possible way for me to know, but he ignored me because he's self-centred at all times and a notorious grump when tired. I'm grumpy when tired, but at least I don't endeavour to verbally bite the head off anyone that annoys me. But alas, I seem to have been blessed with the ability to not use profanity.
Also... I don't own a rubber chicken.

All joking aside, though, respond to stuff. Eventually we'll be forced by social convention to say something in response. :smallamused:

There's a song about that. It's about the evils of rampant consumerism and how it destroys individuality, something like that. I'll have to remember more of the work we did in English to analyse it, but that's the general gist of it.

But even with Xyz summons being a thing you still run the risk of losing the whole thing, complete with overlay units, to cards like Bottomless Trap Hole, Torrential Tribute and Compulsory Evacuation Device, and with priority having been abolished, that can happen before they even get their effects off- meaning that even the one for one removal cards become a lot deadlier if you're careful when you use them.

If priority were still a thing I'd see your point, but since it no longer is, its not like you can get off an Xyz monster's main effect before Bottomless banishes it since many of those are ignition effects.

Well, yesterday was a bit odd for the family.

A package came in for my mother, and it happened to be a leather something kit.

What makes it so odd was.........

1. It was from eBay.
2. My mother shops on Amazon
3. I do not shop online (I'm too cheap for that :smalltongue:)
4. We aren't exactly sure who it is for, but we have a pretty good guess that it came from my father, who refer was "you-know-who".

I dislike getting presents from my father. Usually it is nothing more but junk.
I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but when I say it is junk, it is really junk.
Stuff from bargain bins, yard sales, etc.

Actually, the last straw happened when he sent my little bird house, that happened to have a WASP NEST in it. And for some strange reason, my mother didn't want me to throw it away. So I just put it outside. If those wasps are still there, I dare not want to check.
If the wasps were alive or not when my sister got it, I wouldn't know because I took it out really quickly.

From last thread,

There are but two kinds of poisonous spiders in Virginia; black widows, and the brown recluse. Black widows are easily identified by body shape (and their very distinctive markings), and I normally just leave those alone; I've only ever seen them outside, anyways. Brown recluses are tiny, light-brown spiders, and are reasonably difficult to differentiate from the harmless wolf spiders in poor lighting (where they're normally found).

Isn’t it frightening to see a black widow? Can’t they kill a man with their venom? Here (http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=308) is a Hark, A Vagrant! comic about the brown recluse that provides me enduring amusement.

No my dear fellow, I assure you, they are objectively correct, even as you break them down above. The rhyme is on đəm/ zəm. The final syllables are all that need rhyme. But then *Victorian Ailment* shall inflict him with a slight cough that pales his skin and will suddenly confine him to quarters in the second act!:smalleek::smalltongue:

Rodents eating is cute too.:smallwink:

Yes, yes, and later in the play when time has elapsed he’ll be wheeled out in a wooden high-backed wheelchair with a dressing gown and a tartan blanket across his lap; and decry his machinations, led by correspondence and scheming while holed up in the upper library, that will get the protagonist out of a jam!

I am still hoping you will put a cute picture of your creatures.

Alright, according to my mother the plant which I identified as hollyhock is, in fact, actually Malva. I have my doubts, but they are quite similar looking plants, and I truly find the name less relevant than their beauty. I shall, however, in deference to my mother, refer to them instead as Malva.

Oh, okay, I have never met a Malva. Was it edible?

If a substitution of cocoa may be made, then I should fly far for such foodstuffs in such company. Well, I would if my budget allowed, anyway. As it is, I fear I am fairly stationary.

If you decide to go with burning the house down, kindly take pictures during, not just afterwards. :smalltongue: I find that a good blaze is a beautiful thing, don't you?

One day, when I am a fat and wealthy librarian, I will have a car to send and we will have cocoa and scones in the shade of a grape-tangled arbor. Until that day… alas. & Heh, I agree but if the insurance company finds the pictures on my camera I may have some explaining to do.

Whether or not I decided to take pictures, it would take a veritable armada to prevent my mother from leveling her shutter at every plant within a five-mile radius. :smalltongue:
I quite agree, bleeding hearts are GORGEOUS:

Oh, the plants which I believed to be hollyhock are aggressively perennial, and have entirely taken over the region in which they were planted. I couldn't NOT grow them if I TRIED.

Well then please find it in your heart to put some of her photographies, at least. That is a fantastic bleeding heart shot, still wearing the pink of fresh growth.

I planted out my hollyhocks yesterday evening, but they had grown flimsy and spindly from being started indoors without a grow light. I doubt they’re going to make it. ;___; & I don’t know if the growing season is long enough to start them directly from seeds. But I want them.

Well, think of wild strawberries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_strawberry), but white and with green seeds, and with no traces of red even when they're fully ripe.

Seeing how we just got the birch leaves over here, and how our summer farm usually lies a week or so behind, I'm pretty sure the only thing that makes any verdancy worthy of notice is it's lack of existence right now. Berries are off the table for yet another month or, more likely, two.

That said, if she's willing to settle for fika, I suppose fat would be an understatement...

I am thinking of it; I am imagining what it looks like to bite in half, and see wet sweet flesh white the whole way through. I want it.

I will inform Sidney of this, though if fika be a substitute he will hardly be disappointed. As for me, looking up fika has led me into a time sink of slavering after pictures of Swedish baking.

Alas, I'd need to get a degree before I can get any benefit from such an archetype...

I believe you have the heart of a scholar, even if you do not have the trappings.

It is. But we have never purchased it. Well, there is a large range of honeys available at most supermarkets, I only suggested Red Gum because that's what we have in the cupboard. Alternatively, I can probably ask nicely enough and we can use some of the last of my Dad's honey, it is a shame his bees failed to thrive.

Fruit, possible insect eating as well, but mostly fruit. They like palm fruits when they're available and our bananas when they can get them.

In truth, they are not so bountiful. Mostly, they have been allowed to grow wild, but I like that look. We'll have to take seeds and cuttings and transplant those we can. But alas, Mum's rose garden will probably have to stay behind.

Your father kept bees? That, too, is neat. I love bees. Maybe it’s trite to you because you live it every day, but your garden sounds so neat to me. All full of crazy tropical plants and bees and bats and exotic birds.

That would be a shame, but what can you do? I plan to move in perhaps four years, and I wonder how it will feel to leave behind all the things I have planted and built.

Hey, Kneen, this guy was hanging out around our bird feeder today.

I apologise if this offends you, but I simply do not find comfort in music. It's grating, and one of the very few things that can, in theory, throw me into a furious outrage.

My favourite sound is the sound of silence. :smalltongue:

*twitch*

...excuse me for a minute.

I don't remember... could be.

All three are means of expression; and each of them have other purposes as well; music as intimidation or to relay commands in war (a somewhat dated concept), language as communication, and food as sustenance, but they're all similar in how they can be used.

*explodes* I'm going to go find some static, and listen to that for a while. :smalltongue:

Yes. Social convention is not the hindrance people think it is, it's a tool to be used for your own ends, preferably not evil ones.

...but all of my ends are evil ones... :smallamused:

*boogies on in* Ahoy! I just thought I should let you folks know I finally graduated from college, so I can finally return to the Playground to unload my free time!

Though it's been long enough I'm not sure most folks remember me. >_>

Congratulations and welcome back! (and I recognize the name, at least, so you're not wholly unknown)

Isn’t it frightening to see a black widow? Can’t they kill a man with their venom? Here (http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=308) is a Hark, A Vagrant! comic about the brown recluse that provides me enduring amusement.

I would have put them in the fire. RUINED.

No my dear fellow, I assure you, they are objectively correct, even as you break them down above. The rhyme is on đəm/ zəm. The final syllables are all that need rhyme. You may be conflating trochees with feminine endings, where the final two syllables would have to rhyme, but that is a whole other thing.

Thank you Armadillo. It was actually quite lovely; I spent a lovely brunch with my family on Mother’s Day and otherwise got lots of work on my bathroom renovation done. How was yours?

Their poison is indeed deadly; however, I am only afraid of death in an academic sense, and while I afforded the spiders (there have been a few occasions) a healthy respect and distance after ascertaining that they were indeed black widows, I was not afraid of them, in that sense.

Heh, I love Hark, A Vagrant! :smallamused:

Pfft. I've worn socks that were mostly holes and dirt before, without any problem. :smalltongue:

Bah, fine. It still sounds wrong. The "th" and "s" sounds are dissimilar enough that the rhyme, while technically being correct, has a dissatisfying ring to it.

I went to a graduation party with my mother and some of her friends. (both she and her friend's daughter had recently graduated college). There was lots of food and cake and such, and a good time was had by all.

ION: My stepmother has found a snake of some sort. I'm not sure of what kind, because between the when she saw it and when she finds me to go look at it, it moves away and I can't find it. Isn't that the general rule for statistics? Making intuitive somewhat simple concepts become bogged down with the most ridiculous names and formal procedures for things children do with Venn Diagrams. Oh and formulas lots and lots of them.

Possibly. We're only into probability right now, but I don't anticipate any great changes as we move on to statistics...

Well, I agree with the possible parallels between music and cooking, but language doesn't work that way. You can't just invent new words on the fly and call it language, you need to stay mostly within already set borders or you're just going to be incoherent. Language changes, sure, but compared to music and cooking, it's as static as a glacier.

Bah, Shakespeare is credited with inventing somewhere between 1500 and 2000 (the number depends on who you ask) words by doing exactly that. Many common (and some outdated) English phrases are inventions of his as well. Language is mutable, and people invent words all the time.

Eh, I like static - it's calming to listen to. (for a while, at least). If I wanted a true sequence of disconnected sounds, there are music artists (and I use the term music broadly) that specialize in those. :smallamused:

(not to mention that the word static itself means unchanging...)

I have to come up with an argument to this - although I have no references and this is mostly just personal opinion. I don't really think he invented everything, he simply collected what he had heard and was the first one to use those phrasings in literature. I mean, I do think that he did come up with a lot of them, but I'd say it's a bit of both.

Honestly, it could be either way; but they're credited to him, which is all we really have to go on. (not to mention that there are a great deal of people who don't think Shakespeare wrote all the plays and sonnets history claims him to have authored, and there are even people that (with some reasonable, although not conclusive, evidence) don't believe he was a real person at all, but a pseudonym for one or more playwrights who couldn't publish their name, for whatever reason).

Now, I was pondering if I simply should pass upon it, seeing how it isn't mandatory and only gives a few bonus points on the exam, and I'd really like an evening off, so I even planned to do so, but it kept attracting me like an electromagnet, and now I've actually finished it (-ish, as I still need to look up a few normal-distributed probabilities to complete the final calculations, but that's a five minute task, and transcribing it to paper should be done over the lunch break).

It's funny how lawful my subconscious can be at times. No wonders I have such good grades...

and he thinks he's funny. My sense of humor is... limited, at best, so I figured I would ask others if he is, in fact, funny.

EDIT: that's huge - gimme a few minutes, I'll fix it.

FURTHER EDIT: There, that's better.

True, although it doesn't feel that way... I suppose I'm just used to it.

Bah, how many people can be in two places at once? Two, right? So, reasonably speaking, you only have one other person to worry about.

Aye, I find using English much more natural at times (especially as I now live in an English-speaking country), but it's still very foreign to me. Idioms, phrases, puns... Oh man, I have to ask my friend what it was that got him laugh so much when I didn't understand this one pun.

I think it's more being capable of hiding some things under anonymity, especially when I'd rant to some things relating to my uni course. Unfortunately as majority of the stuff is confidential and the course knows who I am online, it sort of feels meh. VERY meh.

Hello Cuthillius. What news from your end of the world? Here is a cake made from poppy seeds and honey for you.

Thanks be to you in the highest fashion, o king of Housebirds. (Sorry, but you aren't an eagle.)

Anyways, I have been rather busy as of late, with various projects getting in my way, and what with having some beautiful little chickens to raise. I posted a picture in the old thread, I shall post it again, for your enjoyment.

Heh, wordplay is fun. I wouldn't worry too much about idioms; they come and go. I've heard people say things that are clearly cultural idioms that I'm not familiar with at all.

Pfft, there's no such thing as anonymity. I'm confident that there's enough information online for a sufficiently determined person to figure out who I am; that goes for everyone.

Well, you still could. The likelyhood of them checking here for you is pretty low. ...confidential? How? Aren't you studying to be a teacher? Somehow, that doesn't strike me as a particularly secretive line of work.

I actually agree - although I prefer baked to fried. But I coat it in my own blend of spices first (and I mean COMPLETELY coat it) and then the spices form this crunchy outer shell on the already yummy skin and it all ends up tasting pretty okay.

Agreed. That sounds fairly tasty.

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit
2. Take drumstick (or several drumsticks) and place in oven, preferably on some kind of baking pan or sheet. Or a pie tin. Anything that will both keep the chicken from touching the oven and contain the grease chicken tends to leak.
3. Bake for 15 minutes.
4. Coat in spices. My preferred mixture is one of Lawry's seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion salt, Jane's krazy mixed-up salt, and cayenne pepper, but those less accustomed to spice may wish to leave off those last two.
5. You probably didn't coat the chicken well enough. Pour a bunch of spice onto the pan/sheet/tin and roll the chicken around in it. it should be rather discolored by the amount of spice you're using.
6. Bake for a further 17-20 minutes.
7. Consume.

Well, I grew up baking chicken, but Kentucky Fried Chicken is a national fast food chain. I've also had it broiled, boiled, and roasted. I gotta say: boiled is easily the worst, and roasting tends to REALLY dry it out (I prefer my meat to have some JUICE in it).

Lemon-Bacon Baked Chicken

1. Cook bacon until fully cooked safe to eat, but still soft.
1.5. Some of you are going to say "soft bacon! Bah!" I say read further!
2. Season chicken with lemon juice, lemon zest, pepper and place in an oven-safe cooking vessel.
2.5. Additional spices may be used, this is a base.
3. Wrap bacon around chicken.
3.5. Step 1 should make more sense now
4. Bake at 375 Fahrenheit for 45 minutes.
4.5. Let cool...
5. NOMNOMNOM

So my knowledge isn't nearly as extensive as my aunt's, but ...

My great-grandfather, one Reverend Henry Smith Leiper, was a missionary in China before the Boxer Rebellion took place. As a missionary he did typical missionary stuff and he also worked as a teacher and tennis coach. As a teacher one student stood out to him in particular. He let this student into the library which was usually off-limits to younger students almost every day. He was to put it lightly, very impressed and almost proud of this student. This student's name was Mao Zedong.

When he came back to the States after the Boxer Rebellion he went on to become one of the founding members of the World Council of Churches and served as a secretary for some committee. He also worked for the YMCA, met Ghandi at some point (we have his signature in the attic), and did a lot of Anti-Naziwork in Germany prior to the outbreak of WWII.

I actually chose Crunk because it's such a detested genre. There's no counter culture left in being open about your love of rock or metal, if you really want to turn heads choose a loathed genre like brostep or crunk.

In any case, I like to judge genres by their best element, crunk has it's crap for sure (like every other genre), but its best element is the likes of Oomp Camp and Three 6 Mafia. So, yeah, I'm going to stick with "great".

This post I like.

The idea of being counter-culture for the sake of being counter-culture I do not. To quote one of those key 90's punk bands:

Mom and dad they quite don't understand it,
All the kids they laugh as if they planned it
Why do girls wanna pierce their nose,
And walk around in torn pantyhose, oh yeah

I like the ones who say they listen to the punk rock
I like the kids who fight against how they were brought up
They hate the trends and think it's ****ed to care,
It's cool when they piss people off with what they wear, oh yeah

Punk attitudes like those described above and counter-culture for the sake of being counter-culture in general is, well, annoying. (Don't get me wrong though, I love my blink-182. They may not be very good at times, but I admit that.) There is no root cause. Punks, and hippies, and most counter-culture movements up until this point have been prolifically anti-government. Hipsters are just anti-mainstream culture and ... Crunk really isn't even a movement, as far as I'm aware. It's just rap with a lot of vapid, materialistic, misogynist lyrics--or, at least, that's what it is in general.

I'm not sure about calling any one musical genre great either. As you said, lots of genres have terrible acts. Sturgeon's Law states that 90% of everything is crap--and that most certainly applies to music. You just have genres where more than 90% of the music is crap, and genres where that isn't the case. If you want to call an entire genre great, it best be the latter sort, and you're never going to get that from an un-biased music critic. Also judging something by the best is silly, you have to account for everything. Imagine counting GDP/capita if you only judged those with the "best" incomes.

This post I like.

The idea of being counter-culture for the sake of being counter-culture I do not.

It's not in black and white. There's an appropriate context for everything. I decided to be counter culture for the sake of counter culture because in this context it's cute and quirky. You know, the same reason everyone else on every message board in the world chose their screen name?

Also it tends to display the hypocrisies of blind counter culture. It's very cool to admit classic rock is your bag and the flimsy justification of "it's not played on the radio anymore" doesn't hold much water. These very same "anti-system uber trolls" would rather not admit to liking crunk because it isn't very cool.

So they're not really counter culture at all, are they?

NOTE: I actually genuinely like crunk.

I'm not sure about calling any one musical genre great either. As you said, lots of genres have terrible acts. Apples and oranges. Music is subjective, my methods hardly effect much outside of earshot. My voice doesn't carry that far, so I feel judging genres based on their best elements is the way to go. Additionally for monetary and time allocation reasons I can't possibly listen to 100 percent of a genre, or even 50 percent or even 25. Given such constraints I make a point to really only look up what I've been led to believe were the "good" examples from each genre so, in my case, the best example is really all I've got.

If I even become a professional critic I might consider establishing genres a bit more but for the time being I'm into music to enjoy it, so I'm not going to seek out bad examples just in case the information comes in handy, that's silly. Lil Jon might be the scum of the Earth but I wouldn't know.

You see, before I joined this forum it has been basically impossible to find photos of me online if you searched with my real name or this nickname. Which reminds me, I need to delete that photo from the photo thread - it's been there long enough. Anyways, my point is, this is the first time in my life that I am not fully anonymous on the internet. I mean yes I'm on Facebook, but I know my stuff and you cannot even find me there unless you're a friend of a friend.

One other mistake I've done was to have my professional Twitter as Finn first. I'm now under a different nickname, but when you search this nickname you will still find my tweets. Ugh, internet footprint...

A coursemate has already received a warning for indecent discussion about the course, or well, more about placement. It's not that the course heads check them out... It's the coursemates that report you. After that the course will start looking more into what you've been blabbering about.

Pfft, there's no such thing as anonymity. I'm confident that there's enough information online for a sufficiently determined person to figure out who I am; that goes for everyone.

Heh, I read a chronicle about this this morning. Basically, just judging from your Facebook likes and some of the other information that makes up your Internet slime trails, it's generally possible to determine your sex, skin colour, class, education, religion, political ideology, nationality, personality, etc, etc with an amazing accuracy. The greatest reason for why I don't care about Internet anonymity is because I know that against those with the right tools, I don't stand a chance anyway. Partial anonymity isn't worth staying constantly paranoid for.

Sounds like you've got a bunch of barbarian bebbehs for siblings.

More like a bunch of stubborn individuals determined to do things their way.

So are we talking bite-sized portions of the triangular diamonds for fancification?

I'm not really sure what you mean there...

Corgis?

Well... I'll concede that. But they're probably traditional somewhere in America.

Step 2. Exhaust all other diplomatic channels.
Step 3. Go to Sibling Rivalry Town on his Patootie.

*nod, nod*

Unfortunately, doing so would shut off any potential of defending my actions. I've manoeuvred myself into the coveted position of good child, and once there, it can be hard to get out of. At least, in my experience.

I believe you have the heart of a scholar, even if you do not have the trappings.

Alas... It is hard to get proper employment based on one's heart alone in this job climate. Maybe I'll just have to write a book and get an honorary degree. All I need is a suitably depressing topic that allows me to protest something wrong with the world.

Indeed he did. For years he had half wild bees up at a farm somewhere, but due to distractions they went well and truly wild. But he tried to start them up again at my uncle's farm, but alas, the hives did not take.

Indeed. Year round greenery and flowers does dull the sensation a bit. But then one looks forward to those that only flower at certain times, such as the Jacarandas that bloom so gloriously as the year draws to its close. I know you would have them in Canada were it only possible for them to grow there, but alas, we of warmer climates are forced to hoard them.

Unfortunately, it needs to be done and there are some lovely houses out in the country. We'd need to do some painting and add in gardens so we can plant our own plants. But I'm looking forward to properly creating my own space in whatever house we buy, rather than being shunted to the smallest room. It is indeed fortunate that my siblings won't be moving with us.
I know what house I want, but I can't be sure that'll be the one we'll buy, so I can't really plan out what colours I want first. Anyway... Hopefully my opinion will be taken into account because I'll have to pay off whatever mortgage we have left after my parents are too old to.
I'll send you a PM with a link to the real estate site if you ask nicely.

...but all of my ends are evil ones... :smallamused:

Nonsense! I have observed you on numerous occasions performing actions that lead to non-evil ends.

That is why they invented gravy.

That's an Outback Special Steak. If that has bones or fat on it, I will eat my tie.

What exactly makes it an Outback Special?

In other news: I visited my grandparents today. Their nursing home is actually quite nice. My mind had conjured images of something much more sterile, but I was mistaken. They have a nice pair of rooms overlooking a garden and a door out to said garden.
Though it is sad... Grandma N. (as I shall call her for the purposes of this discussion) is starting to get dementia. We brought them a National Geographic so they'd have something to read, and she almost forgot that it was for them. I don't think she realises that she's moved permanently... I think she thinks she's in respite care. But aside from that, she seems healthy despite her age and very bright.
Granddad doesn't look the greatest, but then, he's missing half his jaw. His mind is still there of course. He liked the magazines we got him.

Yeah, I REALLY don't like gravy. It's on my list of foods I inexplicably despise, right up near the top with cheesy potatoes (I like cheese, I like potatoes, but for some reason when you cover potatoes with a cheese sauce the taste of the ensuing product makes my physically ill).

What exactly makes it an Outback Special?

It's from Outback Steakhouse. That's just the name of it. But I definitely can attest to its quality - it's the second-best steak I've ever had. The BEST came very unexpectedly from Pannekoeken.

Oh! I managed to miss that. I also find frying a chicken to be odd as well. Is this typical?

Baked and fried (though not deep-fried) are how I cook almost everything

Hm. Does the bacon's flavour not overpower the rest?

Bacon and Chicken is a magnificent combination, the basis of many fine concoctions.

Nah, my mother HATES steam-cooked food, so she refuses to even teach us how to make it. That's the only thing she won't teach us though, so we don't begrudge her that. She even lets us use the pressure cooker of DOOM! (So called because it's cast-iron and super-heavy and older than she is)

I only steam vegetables, I've never thought about steaming meats...

Death isn't forever. *shrug*

This post I like.

The idea of being counter-culture for the sake of being counter-culture I do not. To quote one of those key 90's punk bands:

I once heard someone say they didn't like a band because "they're too mainstream for [them]" which rather annoyed me

This is basically my view

It probably has been years for me too since I've last heard that song.

I've been busy listening to soundtracks (Tron Uprising, Tron Legacy, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Vectorman and Vectorman 2).

The Vectorman games were probably two of my most favorite games ever.

If it has been two decades, then it was at least 20 years ago. You can't say that something which happened 2009 happened a decade ago, for instance, even though it happened in the last decade...

You know what? No. I shall not say SK8TER BOY AND HE WAS A SK8TER BOY the words. Let it DIE.:smalltongue:

:smalltongue: It's my favorite song to like ironically because it's a song that decries the evils of vanity and materialism by going "neener-neener, I gold-diggered that guy so now I can enjoy all of the vanity and materialism that goes with him."

Hmm... This song is admittedly gloomy, but not suicidally gloomy... You lied to me Stephen Fry!

Here, have some apologies courtesy of Weebl. (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/songs/Stephen+Fry/)

More like a bunch of stubborn individuals determined to do things their way.

I'm not really sure what you mean there...

So little siblings that haven't been the recipient of enough sibling authority to fall into the household hierarchy, eh? That's a shame. Munchkins need a firm hand in order to transform them into humans.

You cut a sandwich on standard bread into 4 pieces, though not really diamond shaped it's sort of like you bisected a rhombus instead of a square because of doing it diagonal-like instead of making them into squares.

And this is being held in opposition to using a knife and fork to actually eat the sandwich by cutting it up into smaller, bite-sized portions.

Well... I'll concede that. But they're probably traditional somewhere in America.

Yes, they're traditional for being adorably impractical things we make fun of but also want but can't have.

I'll consider it, but I'd need to acquire the roast beef first.

Unfortunately, doing so would shut off any potential of defending my actions. I've manoeuvred myself into the coveted position of good child, and once there, it can be hard to get out of. At least, in my experience.

I suppose roast kangaroo isn't the right kind of beast, after all. I don't know if you guys can acquire anything like Texas Toast, but some thick-cut bread goes lovely underneath. Especially if it resembles garlic bread.

Hmm. What's up with that then, you've got fear of parental retribution but they're letting the rest of them be feral? :smallconfused:

If it is, then the rabbits are really wasting their time with those tiny little peonies. :smalltongue:

And one day, when I'm an acclaimed actor, I shall buy you an aviary in thanks. 'Til that day, my friend.

Just say that you started taking pictures after you called the fire department, in order to document the severity of the blaze. :smallsneaky:

When the lilies bloom, I'll post their portraits here for you.

I proscribe a splint, lots of water, and partial shading from direct sunlight - this should allow them to grow stronger without being fried. Of course, since you are quite knowledgeable, you may have already tried this, and simply know that their lives cannot be. If so, let me express my condolences for your loss of potential beauty.

Rabbits in your peonies? Bring me my hassenpfeffer!

It is my dream one day to have a big enough house to turn a bedroom into a budgie aviary. Perhaps, after your investments from your first movie pay off, you can help me remodel whatever home I inhabit at the time.

Your suggestions are sound, but I think the splints would be too finicky for how small and many there were. I'm keeping them watered and will cross my fingers they fill out, otherwise I'll have to buy greenhouse specimens, I guess. It's not as satisfying as creatures I grew from seeds myself, but it will have to do.

Ooh, not fun. I shan't scare you by telling you just how low of a current can be lethal. It's 0.5 amps, if I remember correctly.

They are, in a very dark sense. The memory feels... heavy. It's an odd feeling to have that kind of respect for a creature the size of your thumbnail that's fragile enough to be crushed with the same force that one uses to type.

That was several years ago... I don't think any socks from that time period still exist now (much less that particular pair of muddy ones); they have been either destroyed, discarded, or lost in the parallel dimensions where socks and other loose articles disappear. :smallamused:

Now, don't feel bad because your rhymes were WRONG AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD! *sobs in corner* ...:smallamused: All in good fun, I promise. Your poem was fine.

I offered her a rake, but she didn't want it. Hopefully I'll get to see the thing eventually. :smallamused:

:smalleek: Considering the house carries 100 amps, that is a little worrying. Oh well, I lived! No Darwin award for me! *frenzied laughter*

There is a poetry in that image. I was just reading about the symptoms of their poison -- sounds like a wild trip.

Would you like to visit that parallel dimension? Think of the treasures you could find glittering amidst the socks and the receipts and the bits of string -- wedding rings that fell down drains, old coins and keys, buttons...

*opens the bathroom door a crack and looks out with reddened puffy eyes* R... really?

I'm a rake, but I certainly don't keep the snakes away. Perhaps she is smarter than we know.

Thanks be to you in the highest fashion, o king of Housebirds. (Sorry, but you aren't an eagle.)

Those are cute little fluffballs. Can you cuddle them?

How dare you trick me, sir! :smalltongue:

No, the letter is some 500 miles away, my aunt just posted an except to Facebook and I found it to be most interesting.

Also. Because birds.

Ooh! A cute crow! Good job on its cawing expression, especially. I like your style.

As an archivist, this gives me a pleasure that approaches the erotic. I hope your aunt is taking good care of his records and I hope you get a chance to see them in person one day.

Alas... It is hard to get proper employment based on one's heart alone in this job climate. Maybe I'll just have to write a book and get an honorary degree. All I need is a suitably depressing topic that allows me to protest something wrong with the world.

To be fair, it is hard to get employment based on one's degree alone as well. Whatever you do, please keep cultivating your obvious drive for knowledgeables.

Lousy wild bees, all stingy and lazy and protective of the little honey they can be bothered to make and leeching off the state.

I think you have told me about Jacarandas before, but it was pleasant to Guggle pictures of their splendor again anyways.

Elemental may I please see the house you wish to buy?

Yay for your own space without abrasive siblings! Yay for colours and gardens! I would help if I could!

That's rough. :smallfrown: I hope that you're able to spend some good time with them yet. I know one of my biggest regrets was that my grandparents almost all died when I was still a bratling and so I never really got a chance to really get to know them beyond the extent that a small child can know anyone.

My friend's grandparents ended up not taking to their nursing home very well and actually tried to escape a few times after forgetting where they were and why they were there. The family had to beg the place not to kick them out onto the street, more or less. So I hope your grandma continues to adjust well.

I choose to take your inability to respond as dumbfounded awe at what a badass job I did defending the greatest rock group of all time.

Debatable. Extremely debatable. I don't think any band deserves that tag; it's too broad. I mean, who to give it to? The most recent? The first? The longest-lasting? The most influential? What qualifies a band for any category? What do we mean by "rock"? It's too vague.

Every time I state my dislike of music, I get this response.

There is a reason for that. :smalltongue:

A coursemate has already received a warning for indecent discussion about the course, or well, more about placement. It's not that the course heads check them out... It's the coursemates that report you. After that the course will start looking more into what you've been blabbering about.

I chose a stupid profession to study for. :smallyuk:

I strongly disapprove of a self-moderating body of people on the internet. That leads to mistrust between peers, be they students, co-workers, or otherwise. Well, it has to do with the current flowing through the person; humans are horrible conductors; the amount of electrical resistance in the human body will reduce your average outlet's current (outlets are 120V in the US; I'd assume it's fairly similar everywhere else) to less than 0.1 amps. You can kill yourself with your house's electricity, but it's a little harder than just brushing against a wire. (not that it wouldn't hurt - a lot - but you'd probably still live).

They sound more like getting horribly sick: nausea, vomiting, swelling, and spasms as your nervous system shuts down.

My historian senses are tingling after reading that; you have quite the ancestor! It's the same with my mom's side, too. But I'm always too embarrassed to ask the elders in my family about the ol' ancestors, so I know basically very little; mainly what they talk about among themselves about their parents and grandparents. I have a lot of mechanics and engineers who went military during the World Wars in my family.

Aahh, old documents in general are excellent historical gifts. Does your family own a lot of old things? Personally, mine seems fond of keeping and getting hold of books, which is a-okay with me.

Yep, pointy sharp little things they are. You say "Execute!", and they just say "Nope, badarg". And so you take a close look at your arguments, and see them to be all sound and reasonable, and you go back and take a look at the library, and see you're indeed providing them on the correct format, and so you go back to try again, but no, "badarg".

So you become frustrated and go home, but as you let your thoughts roam freely (and by that, I mean linger around your work, because for some odd reason, you always think the best when you're not trying to think), you realise that perhaps, just perhaps, the error may originate from another source, and just propagates along the lines until it finally crashes hard against a wall, and brings the whole place burning down with it.

Actually, outside the US, I'm pretty sure 220-240 V is the predominating standard (it definitely is in Europe, at least), and that may very well be lethal to you, but on the other hand, the lower current required to reach the same power means a reduced fire hazard. It's a balancing act, really.

Aye, debugging is a horribly frustrating thing, is it not? Curse those insects.

Well, in the correct environment, it can be pretty entertaining, a bit like a challenging puzzle for which you've lost the box lid. Now, such an environment needs to provide you with a few basic features, like telling you what arguments you passed to a function in order to make it fail. Erlang doesn't do such a thing, ergo Erlang isn't very fun to debug.

Also, dynamic typing. Dynamic typing is fun until it isn't, and the point where this happens is very precisely defined as "when everything goes haywire".

Yeah, my mom always yells at them and chases them away when she sees them, but so far they have limited themselves to just the peonies and whatever falls onto the ground from the birdfeeder.

We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our peonies and we fall back. They assimilate entire gardens and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And *I* will make them pay for what they've done.

So, I suggest slaughtering one and drawing a line of blood in the sand. For every one rabbit that crosses it, two more are slaughtered and become dinner for the family and pets.

:smalltongue: It's my favorite song to like ironically because it's a song that decries the evils of vanity and materialism by going "neener-neener, I gold-diggered that guy so now I can enjoy all of the vanity and materialism that goes with him."

Here, have some apologies courtesy of Weebl. (http://www.weebls-stuff.com/songs/Stephen+Fry/)

So little siblings that haven't been the recipient of enough sibling authority to fall into the household hierarchy, eh? That's a shame. Munchkins need a firm hand in order to transform them into humans.
:I just know it from EBA. And vague kiddie memories of pop music.:smalltongue: Speaking of, HAHA I HAZ EBA.

Weebl is awesome. Toast King is sex god.

I thought of card game, even though I KNOW the context is wrong damnit augh.:smallmad::smallbiggrin:

Rabbits in your peonies? Bring me my hassenpfeffer!

Well I can't say that song bears any nostalgic charm, but I was listening to 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys the other day with much relish. The music video for Bye Bye Bye was actually awesome.

Is your health okay, Ovis? Will you survive pneumania?BLUGHF.

Heh. Backstreet Boys were a thing.:smallamused:

It seems to be mostly passed, now. I've been to school for three days and manage, though I fear giving two speeches in the next two days. I do sleep often though, and still have a small appitite. Actually, I haven't mentioned this yet, but I apperently lost weight between March and this recent bout. I'm 93 pounds!:smallwink:

IRN:Coid is awesome for reminding me neener neener is a thing.:smallamused::smalltongue:

Actually, outside the US, I'm pretty sure 220-240 V is the predominating standard (it definitely is in Europe, at least), and that may very well be lethal to you, but on the other hand, the lower current required to reach the same power means a reduced fire hazard. It's a balancing act, really.

I may be wrong about ours too... I know they're different, but I didn't think it was by that much. No, we're both right; the US standard is 120, and most of Europe (and the rest of the world, actually) is between 220 and 240. (also, I think you mean resistance; generally, a higher voltage means a higher current, and resistance the opposite).

ION: Ye gods, the madness. So, apparently our DM was not really prepared for me summoning a ****ton of shadows. We decimated a bunch of giants and a dragon, killed off an entire town, and took their treasure and souls. Their bodies we will animate next session. :smallcool:

All of this was over a flowerpot.

Indeed. I think the story behind this has to do with power lines and time, or something.

Well, hello, Random Banter, I presume you are collectively fine this evening. Yes, quite likely so, quite likely; inform me should I be incorrect.
Si, signor. :smallwink:

My historian senses are tingling after reading that; you have quite the ancestor! Now I want to burn the rest of the day reading through the non-fiction section of my newly-organized totally-professional-looking bookshelves. I guess I probably will do that anyway, it's getting boring around here, and information is interesting!
Ah, such is life. Boredom is a terrible disease, but reading is wonderful medicine.

That's cool. My mom's dad designed some sort of "clean" burning diesel fuel for planes back during WWII. And may or may not have helped to develop Agent Orange a little bit after that ... Which is terribly ironic if he did play a role. Seeing as his nephew sort of cut a world tour short in Cambodia after he found love. Oh well.

I can also trace back to William Bradford and Giles Corey. So that's fun.

Aahh, old documents in general are excellent historical gifts. Does your family own a lot of old things? Personally, mine seems fond of keeping and getting hold of books, which is a-okay with me.
Well, there's the Ghandi signature that's up in the attic, and I somehow wound up with an original copy of Tarzan of the Apes for Christmas last year. My mom started a tea-pot collection which sounds sort of boring, but there's some really old Asian stuff in it. She also has a collection of Matryoshka dolls from back when she was going to the USSR every year.

So high school is over. I drop in to pick up my cap and gown Friday and then wait a week to actually graduate, but it's over since Monday. I've had a lot of quiet time to think about it the last couple days. Not sure it's been long enough yet to craft an opinion of my current situation... But still. I guess something'll probably happen now while I go about my personal plans for this mean-time prior to Uni.

Anyone else high-school-out or on the verge of being outed?

Me! I have two weeks till graduation though. And it's such a weird feeling knowing your done ... I have no idea what to do with my summer. I guess get a part time job. Though that may be difficult I'm going to up-state New York for two weeks in June and might be going down to Flordia with my girlfriend and her family in August. I know I need to work on my driving and my drawing.

What do you mean by "old Asian stuff?"

Old Asian teapots. Two from China, one from Japan, and one from Cambodia. I guess there are some older English ones in it as well.

He was right
Power = Current x Voltage
Where voltage is higher less current is needed for the same power output.

Ah. Was it a particularly nice flowerpot?

Quoth the DM: "It's a porcelain pot, with red, blue, tan and purple stripes."

So, pretty fancy. I think he said it was worth 25gp. (which is a lot of money for commoners, but practically pocket-change for us).

I think it'll be important to the plot later, as it's been hinted that we shouldn't break it. (nevermind that it got used as a weapon when we took it) :smallamused:

I was thinking Ohm's Law (Current = Voltage/Resistance) on account of him mentioning fires (from the wires heating up, presumably) but you're correct. The lower current would be safer (as far as lethal shocks go), too, although it means that there would actually be more resistance in the wires. (because decreasing current and increasing voltage results in a higher resistance).

I think she's used the Japanese one once. And I know she's used the English ones a few times. I remember one time she started to use one of the English ones when a British colleague was over and he just hi-jacked the tea making process entirely.

I have no idea. (presumably, because we wanted it. I'll probably add it to my backstory) The campaign started with us in possession of the flowerpot, being chased by guards for stealing it. We then killed them, and then **** went down. :smallamused:

Hrm... maybe I should write a campaign log for this. :smallamused:
