I'm playing a Dragonborn Dwarven Fighter/Cleric/soon-to-be-Runecaster with an affection for gems. Naturally his runes will be in the form of gems found on his adventure.

I just found a blue sapphire worth 375g and I'm wondering how many rune gems I realistically could make out of it. I know sapphire is an expensive gem in general as it is one of the gem types suggested at higher valued gems in the random generator in the DM book (p. 55), so even though it is of high value it's still small. I was thinking of making gem plates out of it.

I'm kinda stuck between realism and cheesy ideas so I'm thinking the gems could be a natural barrier between the two. Any thoughts about how to handle this with a balanced mind? Cheesing with runes is way to easy...
